I'm a STO community member and can't believe how the forums have changed in the last few weeks (basically since closed beta started) I have to admit the way Cryptic is handling the whole release date thing isn't so well but the fact that so many people feel cheated by buying subscriptions to Champions Online only to have to wait for closed beta (It JUST started a couple weeks ago) might be rough. That being said Star Trek Online's start hasn't been as huge as the opening announcement was (remember Spock?) but it still looks like a great game. I just realize that they've already had a lot to live up to with the license, but they just raised that bar for players a lot more. Already hearing people calling it "the game we play before SWKOTOR" Ouch.

I say give the Trekkies one of those small phasers to play with, but tell them it's a communicator. |

I wonder, what game will they be waiting for while they play KotOR? Thats how MMOs seem to go ever since WoW came out. many only play one while waiting for the next one to come out. |

There's a reason people are up in arms about the game. I can't go into specifics, b/c of a legally binding contract, but I will say that CO felt rushed and it's a bumbling mess now. Star Trek is an IP that deserves care and solid development. ....... if people were dissappointed in the development & launch product of CO, there's nothing new to see w/ STO.

and by "comunity" you mean the navel gazers who arent in the actual Beta Forum but spend a good amount of time time yip yapping amongst themselves. The only people who seem to have a problem are people who fell for some marketing and bought a lifetime sub to CO. None fo these whiners sound like they have ever Bet's a game before. That being said. I am really worried that Cryptic is doing this game. I dont have anything bad to say just that I dont think they are the right fit. for the material. |

STO is doomed to fail before it begins. The game looks absolutely horrible in every video I've seen, nothing even looks slightly attractive. So, what does that leave you with? The most hardcore Trekkies being the only ones playing and not all Trekkies will play. Unless they have something amazing that I'm not aware about, that will get people who are floating between MMOs and enjoy space themed games (which is a low number anyway btw) then you're looking at STO lasting a year max.

Personally I was really looking forward to this, but the videos have been a big let down to me. the graphics look far too cartoonish to me, and that is something that doesnt fit into the ST universe very well. its meant to be Star Trek, not Star Wars The Clone Wars kid show afterall. Star Trek as a whole attracts a far more mature group of players than most IP's, so it just doesnt really give me much hope that they will really do the IP justice. afterall if they cant even be bothered to use an engine that fits in with the IP then its likely that they wont bother to build a deep and compelling world.
I just hope that they dont try and turn it into a kiddie fest with whoever has the biggest phaser wins, because that was never what the show was about. Half the time in the shows the main characters were outnumbered, outgunned or otherwise at a major disadvantage and they managed to survive mainly because they werent stupid enough to run in all guns blazing. |

When the publisher is offering lifetime subs before the game even launches... yeah I think we can see how this will turn out. Give me liberty or give me lasers |

Cryptic has this whole "rapid development" approach. In other words, Cryptic is trying to apply the fast food approach to MMOs. We saw how well that worked out with Champions Online and it will work out similarly with Star Trek Online. Shame really because, although I'm not a huge fan, Star Trek has a very deep and highly developed setting and it deserves better. Now that these clowns got their hands on a Neverwinter Nights license they'll ruin another great IP.

Doesn't change how many people you see, just how many people you have access to. FE can do it on one server because their subs are really low =P But fighting in Canada with 100 other people is plenty full for my liking. That there are 27 other 100 people instances going that I can jump to doesn't bug me. That said STO is an IP MMO, meaning its not for you, its for them. Trekkies are the goal, not MMO jumpers. Trekkies will play this, trekkies will not jump ship to their nemisis StarWars the two don't co-exist for the trekkies. Hell there are whole comedies based on this, where you been ;) FYI I wish AoC, would just merge all servers into one PvE and one PvP and run the multiple instance thing but not looking like that will happen. |

Huh hadn't heard that. That would give Cryptic a super hero, fantasy and sci-fi MMO under their belt, all IP driven... meaning externally funded. Might not like the results but good on Cryptic for growing fast and in massive directions. |

Cryptic is owned by Atari. NWN IP is also owned by Atari. Champions Online IP was acquired by Cryptic when they bought the company that created Hero Games. Star Trek licensing was transferred to Cryptic when Perpetual filed for bankruptcy. None of their IPs are externally funded.

i'm getting mad because i was promised a closed beta key when i purchased my lifetime CO sub. I have yet to recieve any sort of message explaining when i will get in or even why it has not happened yet. I am quite happy if i have to wait until a (closed) open beta or something like that but at least tell me, 3 weeks of checking e-mails and my Cryptic account are frustrating at best.
