So here we have it. Darkfall Online.. A game I have been waiting seriously years to play it. I decided to play it finally. Paid by 50 bills to buy it and download it. I played a Mahirim. With that being said I began my journey out in a starter City called "Hunter's Moon." The quest system is very hidden at first, no outlying markers to let you know that NPC has a quest unless you go up to them and interact (it seems all quests are given out by shopkeepers.) My first job was to kill some goblins. Here is where it became interesting: My first journey out I was killed right off the bat. It didn't really get to me at first because it is a pure pvp game. I went back out with my starter sword at hand and finally made it to my gob camp. I managed to kill 3 goblins before yet another player came in and killed me. Mind you the people that were killing me were -not- newbie at all, they were either full plated or full bone armored with a R50 polearm. Four swipes and I was dead, no defense for newbs. So I felt, hey maybe it's because I suck right now, it will get better over time. I managed to complete the quest and get my title quests (the ones that give 2k gold and a bunch of other goodies) here where all the hell broke loose and I finally realized the downfall of Darkfall. This game is heavily regent based. Spells take regents. You have 100's of spells that take them and some of the most common regents drop off of mobs newbies kill. With that being said, you have 100's of people who have max-skilled tons of magics and weaponry skills who do not want to farm them off of mobs or buy it via trade, they want to take it from the weak. So, my next quest was to kill 300 gob scouts 200 fighters 20 shamans. During the couple of days it took me to do that, I was killed about 50 to 60 times, every time by high levels who were fully armored with high end weaponry. Taking all my reagents and arrows I had looted from the mobs I killed. After finishing my quest, I decided to take refuge in a guild. I found that joining a guild at a low level didn't help you. You couldn't participate in PVP battles (you die first and watch the match on the ground or through chat as you're running back to the battle), no one seemed to help you PVE too well unless you were "Magic Grinding." I did do a few sessions of magic grinding but of course, EVERYONE knows those grinding spots and hide until people come in to grind in which they kill you and loot your regs again. So if you like to PVE or even try to skill up, expect to be pissed off by dying a dozen times before you get any better in any skill. The crafting system is nice; however, farming again is the same rinse and repeat as before. You spend 15 minutes farming a node of iron ore, to get maybe 40ish ore + 12ish sulfur. You move on to the next ore node and get killed by another fully skilled armored player farming YOU for your hard earned work. So, you go through another method of looting one node running back to your newb town and running back out. Take more time, but is safer, sometimes. The problem around newbtowns is that you have other newbs or farmers farming the nodes where players cant readily kill you. So you then have to venture just beyond the telsa tower safety where all the people are waiting. After getting killed dozens of times just to get 200 iron ore, you abondon any hopes of skilling up weaponcraft or armorcrafting. Might as well make potions right? All in all, the game is very original. Sandbox as people put it. Though what spoils the game is the amount of newb killing that takes place. You do not get a chance to breathe in the game and cannot compete with the higher end guys. Players always say that you'll be good in a couple of months. So my final thoughts on this game and who should play it: If you enjoy a unique game in which you pay 15 bucks/month to play and on a daily basis get killed a dozen + times trying to skill up one of a thousand attributes, then this game is for you. If you can take that abuse for the next 4 to 6 months before you can manage to defend yourself, then this game is for you. If you don't like dying left and right by high end players because either they're bored, or they want your 50 gold and 10 arrows, this game is NOT for you. If you don't like your 30 minutes of node farming be interrupted by a death and full loot, this game is not for you. I for one have found Darkfall, too raw, too unforgiving, too hardcore for a weekend player. Maybe kids who are still in high school or college without a job fit this game, but not people who have to make a living. This game is designed for a serious grinder who has several hours at a time each day to grind away. The rewards in the end are maybe fun, but just a game not for me and many other people. I truly wish they had a pre-trial before wasting my money on purchasing the game as I didn't even last the full month of playing they give you free when you buy the game. Live on Darkfall! |

He said he joined a guild. But why the hell were out on your own when you knew the risk? You say you got killed 60 times a day! Then you must begin to think you are doing something wrong! You need to make a lot of friends in DF. And quick. The clan you joined does not sound as the best one for you. I understand if that was not your fault, they should have taken care of a new member. They must have been real idiotes.
But atleast you gave it a try : ) |

Heh, in open pvp games, knowing when to run away is a player skill all in itself. When I first played UO i hated it. After 2 weeks of forcing myself to play to make up for the cash i dropped on it I was addicted and still play it to this day. Darkfall and all other open pvp games are an acquired taste and take some getting used to. There's a learning curve to get used to which isn't based on the game. It's based on the brain of the player. If you are new and see a red player coming at you in full armor etc. then run. Fast. LoL if you don't then that's your fault not the game. P.S. One night UO and EQ met at an MMORPG mixer and drank a little too much and had the sexy time. What came out was DF. If you never played Ultima Online and/or Everquest this isn't the game for you.

It's his story, it doesn't matter if it's totally accurate, it's how he felt. Darkfall isn't for everyone. I think maybe you had some bad timing, or Wolf lands are harder than every other new player area. I've never played a wolf. Before you give up try moving out of there and to a different city. There's also, at least on NA-1 a clan called NEW that specifically helps new players. You don't even have to join, you can just ask advice. They're backed by practically every major alliance on the server. This isn't a recruiting post, I don't belong to NEW, it's just a resource I'm trying to make you aware of. It sounds like you've played way more than enough to leave the goblins behind for a while. Move on to something a little different. There's mobs out there that are easier than the goblins and drop more stuff. To me the difference between fun and not was the clan I joined. I'd agree with others and say join one, or change to a new one if you're not getting the teamwork you want out of yours. Asdar |

You'll be pleased to know that magic is about to be hit with the nerf bat just a tad, as cycling AoE's is just ... stupid. Have a look on the Darkfall Spotlight posts to see some of the changes just around the corner - much needed love to melee and archery, and racial skills. You mentioned Darkfall as being "too raw". My thinking on it is a diamond in the rough - and the devs are rapidly trying to smooth the chruncy edges off it. The new player experience, currently, is horribly brutal. You die far, far more than in the "real" game, in a decent clan. And PS ... for all the jerks who hunt newbies for their regs, forget that. A much better use of your PK time is to hunt gold farmers, now those guys know how to gather reagents! And best thing - if you can work out who the gold farmers are, they will be back to work the spawns, literally. I don't like gold sellers, they mess up games like Darkfall. But they do provide superb loot! Be nice to new players; hunt gold farmers instead. They drop really nice loot!

my beef with open pvp and full loot has always been this. there is no meaningfull pvp or roleplaying, the only thing these games create is a world of thugs, for thugs, where hundreds of people's only desire in the game is to gank lower levels who cant put up a fight, for no good reason. Im looking forward to mortal online, but if I have one concern, its this. I dont mind getting killed a few times, but ganked over and over just because the little shit on the other side cant be assed to farm his own mats or is just in the mood for being a prick? no thanks.

That 30 days free doesn't seem so free now, does it...
Anyway, thanks for the write up. It seems as though you gave it an honest effort.
Try not to let all the "it's your fault" replies get to you. That's a pretty typical response to anyone that doesn't see the greatness that Darkfall is. DarkFall FAQ - Read then Question with Boldness |

diamond in the rough? it certainly is, needs a polish? as in 'oh crap we released the game incomplete, 3/4our promised contents were not delivered, MO is already showing more in BEta than we did at launch, on noes..' kind of polish?
and Lo the game is full of asshattery to the only place to survive is in a guild and as part of a zerg? biggest Zerg wins huh? Exactly why i stopped playing, I am far from Casual but getting my ass handed to me by some vindictive little shit 'because they can' is not my idea of relaxing in a game. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ab/Norsefire-logo.png |

I would like to see a mechanic that would stop people from punishing newbies. But that would ruin the game. Maybe giving an incentive not to hit newbies. I'm not sure, but I don't see much a problem. I enjoy the Wild West. |

People seem to forget that this game lets you make mistakes, and allows you to set your own goals. You will not be a 1 v 1 combat god on day one, indeed if you could there would be no point playing long term. But even a newer player can be extremely effective in big PvP battles - their revive skill is every bit as good at saving someone as a more developed character, and if they know how to follow fire control commands over Ventrillo, they are as good as anyone else on a cannon. There are a lot of, well, complete wankers in any FFA PvP game. But there are also some really nice people, and the community itself is slowly changing, and becoming far less tolerant of anti-social playstyles. A key part in that is unique naming - people who are genuinely griefing really do risk having their karma catch up with them. One of the classic "gotcha" consequences was the Crafters revenge: a player who wanted to buy something found a seller, traveled 2 hours, and then when face to face with the seller was told "Oh, you! I remember you. You killed me for no reason, sorry deal's off." (wasn't me who did that, by the way - it's just too cruel for my tastes). People in Darkfall are completely fixated on killing people. Personally I prefer to play as a dedicated healer - and it's loads of fun, very social, and one heck of a challenge. If you miss, you can heal the bad guys by accident! Woops! :P

It seems everyone except Respit understood the topic poster.
He wasn't doing a rant/cry/whine opinion about the game, he gave a new player Ï tried the game a few days or weeks"opinion. He followed the "rules"imposed by the game: Join a clan
What he couldn't deal with was being used as a farming tool for more powerful and experienced players.
You guys keep posting about how nobody gives this game a chance and you flame people that post honest mini reviews like he did but its all Darkfall fault.
He is a starting player and as such he doesn't have any weapons good enough to fight a full plated opponent with powerful skills or magic. He was trying the game and trying to "level up" but wasnt allowed to by the same players that post: ganking newbs is for noob!
This is 1 thing Darkfall needs to have fixed, the ability to provide new players a chance to understand the game FAST before they decide to quit and call it crap because another guy ruined the fun. Its nothing about being skillful in running or using a bank. |

hold your horses folks, OP just blamed his causal playstyle not the game. IMO he walked in the wrong clan which didn't supported him and his playstyle, bad luck. -----MY-TERMS-OF-USE-------------------------------------------------- "There was suppression of speech and all kinds of things between disturbing and fascistic."
