I am a noob player EVE on a trial and still deciding if I want to upgrade. I'm leaning toward yes.  Currently there are 26,000 players which is pretty good I guess.  My concern is what will happen when Star Trek Online comes out. How many people will drop this for that.  I do not know anything about Star Trek MMO nor will I be playing it at all in the future.  I was just wondering.

I don't think Eve will be impacted by STO at all.  Eve is a totally different type of game and appeals to a different crowd.  STO will be a simple, casual game with very little depth and no soul.

not even a chance of that happning..... and there are closer to 300k players not 26k :P

nah star trek online will be different type mmo. it's like comparing pre-cu star wars galaxies with star wars the old republic. EVE has strong following.

the 26k number you see when you log in is the number of currently online players.

STO is not going to touch eve's playerbase as its aimed at a completely different audience. i dont think many eve players are looking for a lootless quest based level heavy mmo.

Agreed.

Regarding that 26k number, that was just the number of players online at that very moment. EvE has a solid playerbase of roughly 300-350k subscriptions.

If STO is anything like CO was, then Cryptic will drop the ball as usual.

There will probably be a slight dip, heck, even I might give STO a try just for its IP, but I won't cancel my EVE subs.

The most it will impact is newer players like the OP that are more likely to give the new kid on the block a whirl instead of giving EVE a trial.

Die hard EVE players aren't going anywhere.

As a long time CoX fan, CO is quite good thank you very much.

Anyway, no STO won't pull subs from Eve since they are quite different except for the whole in space thing.

The crowd that plays EVE will have next to no interest in STO. STO is everything that EVE is not and vice versa. Besides you see how well CO is doing right? Yeah all the confidence in the world in that company of doing a good sci fi game with one of the largest IP there is...lol

No, it isn't actually.

You admit to being biased though, so your opinion really doesn't mean much. You wouldn't say it was bad even if you truly thought it was, just out of some misplaced loyalty to Cryptic.

Plenty of documentation that proves CO is a worthless pile of trash, thank you very much.

EvE Rules #491 you should never, ever attack Russians on winter months

STO is like WoW in space so few star trek fans will try the game, few will remain there and most will come back

Playing: Guild Wars

I highly doubt it, because they both appeal to different target audiences. After all, EVE is pretty much the most famous sandbox game avaliable, while Star Trek Online will be following the traditional themeparks. So yes, I highly doubt the majority EVE fans will flock over to Star Trek.

Maybe they might be curious enough to just try it, but I have a feeling that some of them will be coming back to EVE, especially if they like the sandbox genre.

Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)

The new Star Wars MMO might dent EvE a bit, but really the same objections apply; it is PvE based, instanced, theme-parky. If it is really well done then it might have the effect of pushing the EvE devs to upgrade EvE's PvE experience, which can only be to the good in the end.

At first it will leave a mark. But in reality, I think it could bring MORE attention to Eve. I dont think Star Trek will be successful (just a guess), and it might actually spark convo for people to try Eve. Just guessing here though.

It may pull some initial subs, but I don't think it will hold them.  People will want to try the "new and shiny." If the devs totally mishandle the IP, like they did with CO, then I think STO will be the one to die.

It could also go in the opposite direction, forcing ccp to separate themselves from the pve theme park more clearly in order to preserve their market niche.

Simple answer; STO is being produced by Cryptic so no.  CoX has never been better since they relinquished control to NCSoft and left to be their stand alone company.  I don't even want to comment on CO and I was actually looking forward to it at one point.

I'd be fine with that too! Imagine if all the hi-sec mission-whores r-u-n-n-o-f-t to Star Wars, CCP could finally reform missions!

But no... I dont think that's the way it would work. EvE already owns that niche. The battleground would be PvE... and as it's presently structured, EvE needs it's PvE, and let's face it, that PvE needs improving even without EvE having any direct competition. There's so much they could do with it - especially now they're introducing ambulation. In fact I almost hope that's why they've been holding off on improving it.

Imagine doing an exploration site where using the code analysis unit to access the Ruined Station is only the start. Then you get out of your Cheetah and the real exploration starts... oh god that would be awesome.

Imagine properly huge asteroid belts tens of thousands of KM (hundreds of grids) long, with randomised ore spawns to prospect for, hidden pirate hangars suddenly producing rat spawns - and maybe a clue to the location of other pirate locations in the belt; anchorable player asteroid bases with cloaking units that hide them from directional scanners...

There is so much that CCP could add to EvE's PvE without compromising it's PvP niche in the least. I know that adding PvE content is expensive, but equally, it can be very profitable too, if done right.
