The difference between Icarus/Fallen Earth and Tabula Rasa (or whatever failed MMOG you want to plug in here) is that Icarus has noone to answer to. The have no publisher, they are not a subsidiary of a bigger company, they are their own boss. They also seem to know that they are a niche game and don't have aspirations to be anything more than what they are (know their limits), and they seem to revel in that fact. This is one of those cases, similar to CCP/EVE, where their level of success is measured on a totally different, subjective scale than say a Blizzard or anyone else. My personal, gut feeling is that Icarus and Fallen Earth are going to be around a long time, and the game is only going to get better. Yes, there will be a lot of the MMOG-hopper crowd gone in 6 months time, but in that time as FE becomes more and more polished and has more content added it will attract the people that can appreciate the game for what it is... ------------------------- |

Fallen Earth is a niche game and I think it will grow the same way as EVE did/does. Just like EVE Icarus promisses to add content (sectors) few times a year which keeps the players interested while at same time getting new players via trials and advertizing. Same recipe as CCP is using for EVE and has proven to be sucessful, even though after 6 years you still see threads like" EVE will die if..." and all kinds of "I ragequit" threads heh. Icarus is doing all the right moves so far and It will probably pick around 200-250k subs and stay there for years. I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today. |

Get ready for the LONG HAUL. Granted, there will be games like Star Trek Online, Star Wars: ToR and countless others on they way and many players will try. But just remember, this is a Post Apocalytpic game, not a Phasers on stun and piloting thru the stars and you wont be wielding lightsabers. Its got its on unique player base of followers. You have just entered Mad Max meets the Postman online. I look at Fallen Earth like this (honestly). There is even a interceptor in the video. As a matter of fact. the PA theme is getting pretty popular in movies once again and FE got the jump on it with there MMORPG. |

My prediction is that FE will come to be known as a success story in the genre. I think the niche market that Icarus has aimed for is a population of older gamers, that like the gritty adult setting and the refreshing change that FE is, and that population is just going to keep growing.
Not that I know *that* much about the mmo industry but Icarus seems to have a growing reputation for being particularly clever. This iphone application I read about is an example, which was talked about by the lead developer in a Keynote seminar kind of thing. The link can be found in another thread on these boards if you are curious.
I've also read that construction and pets are on the horizon but may take some time. Icarus are independent and so they are free to say when they think new systems are ready, and they are careful with their game, in a good way.
For lots of reasons, mostly not being able to play as much as I'd like to, I'm only level 9. The thing is FE does not do that addictive DING thing that WoW does, nor do they have a loot driven gear system. What I'm trying to say is that I already have a much "healthier" long-term dersire to play FE that has nothing to do with gaining levels quick quick, or gaining uber gear quick quick. |

FE is here to stay. The core of the game (gameplay / game mechanics) is rocksolid and a great foundation to build on. I think it will have long lasting value like EVE online does for a specific group of gamers. It is good, and it is easy to see how it can be even better :) |
