And in my opinion, will be the downfall of this game, assuming that SV are able to sell enough new beta slots to fund the game development to the point of release. Leaving aside the well-known bad/dodgy aspects of the game -- the fact most of the touted features of the game are still not even in the game after months of beta, the generally very slow pace of development in the beta, and the fact that SV is having to sell off another 10K beta slots to continue the game's development -- I just don't think that FP-only view works very well at all for a MMORPG. The main reason why FP-only view doesn't work is that in real-life, we all have peripheral vision allowing us to perceive motion and limited detail out to almost 180 degree frontal arc. FP view necessarily retricts the viewing arc to closer to 90 degrees, or as in MO's case, extends a bit further, resulting in the (IMO, disturbing) "fish-eye" effect seen in MO videos. IMO, archery works quite well as FP, magic doesn't feel quite right as FP, and FP melee is downright terrible. FP magic loses a lot of immersion and wow factor due to magic animations being restricted to a "glowy hands" effect. FP melee is (IMO) particularly bad - the restricted viewing angle doesn't work well with the wide swinging arcs of medium to large hand-held weapons, leaving the FP melee feeling restricted, closed in, and claustrophobic - the precise opposite of what the experience should be like. Darkfall's approach of keeping archery and magic as FP but melee in 3rdPV in my opinion was the best possible compromise, though I would have preferred to have been able to manually flip between 1stPV and 3rdPV at all times. Feel free to share your thoughts. |

So don't play it? Not to be rude, but this view "just does not work... FOR YOU". Lot's of people like it, they understand the immersion that comes with it. And that's fine, let them like it. There are plenty of other games out there for you to play. Why spend your time worrying about this one? |

having the option to go from 1st to 3rd is always a good thing for any game, an i think a 1st person view is awesome, in EQ i had the best time in 1st person view seeing my kicks and swinging my blade in a fight that was just the best times, but you could go in 3rd if you wanted so having the options to play how you want is always a bonus giving your player base more options is never a bad thing |

That is why there should (and will) be no 3rd person view. It' a matter of opinion of course. |

Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic was pretty good In my opinion , because there was no 3rd person view.
MO is a game where you can PickPocket , Backstab , Ambush. All of these become useless if your enemy has eyes behind. Being 1st person view , also adds a bit of "unsafe " factor , knowing that if someone gets behind you , unless you hear him You won't be able to see him , making the trip through "The Forest Of Absolute Death And Despair " more interesting. I think its a great approach , and will attract players ,rather than lose.
It's just that some people like to look at their character Ass/Shiny Armor/Animation of tons of lights doing nothing. |

the stealth opportunities are a big plus when it comes to 1st person, and I always thought that 1st person is the only way for us to actually feel what is like to be in our characters shoes, so to speak. a true role playing game (dont confuse with virtual "acting"). 3rd person mmos are more like toys then rpgs. dont get me wrong, I like toys, I think we all do =), but 1st person just adds a little more to the immersion. I have been wanting to play a good sandbox, cause I never have, and this seems like it, but Im starting to think its going to fall before its released. I mean, selling beta spots because they cant afford the development costs seems pretty desperate to me, and it doesnt bode well. but I hope im wrong, that it comes out and its awesome.

I dont mind the first person, but cant do it all the time. For example when I was playing Morrowind and Oblivion I liked to switch views depending on the situation. If I was going to a cave/dungeon I would go first person, outdoors I liked to switch. I guess this game will cater the first person niche!

Dead horse is dead folks.
I had a whole post written out, but firefox decided to die and delete it all...
Long post short; they aren't going to change it and getting all worked up won't do anything. |

Vulpeculae, I agree with you on the advantages that 3rd person gives but 1st person still does have its advantages as well. Mostly with things like aiming, and I mostly thinking of Oblivion when I say this. In Oblivion 3rd person was not very good for those trying to use a bow or cast spells, but would be better for malee. I would agree 100% though if the aiming was better and worked more like a gears of war style 3rd person controls. Then I would probably never use 1st person, and I love first person shooters. The biggest thing about 1st person though if everyone is using it, it does create huge blind spots and allows for people to sneak up on others. Also creates a greater sense of being there and being alone. |

I've been looking for a UO type of game forever. I thought Darkfall was it until I saw first person view. I thought Mortal Online would be it until I saw first person view. I guess for me the only time I'll ever get a new UO is if they just re-make the OG UO (top down view) with better graphics. |

Originally posted by LordShinobu So not only does it force you to use only one perspective but also creates a ganktastic environment? I can hear the moans and whines already. Why play anything other than a rogue then? That is a huge advantage for rogue classes and if you look at the majority of pvp games in the past, one of the biggest complaints and largest causes of imbalances were rogue classes with too much of advantage. Alot of other mmorpgs have set themselves up to fail from the getgo, at least MO could be original. |

I agree with you OP. Forced first person view wont work and I dont buy this immersion crap. If it was for immersion they wouldnt forced it to first person. Probably there are other reasons, like easier to code a locked 1st person view rather than allow 3rd person view spanned camera. Regardless of the reason, melee combat simply does not work in 1st person view. And also, it takes away alot not being able to see your own character, the equipment, spells etc. Its just a poor design decision, one that will cost this game alot of subscribers. |

I played Oblivion in 100% first person. Also theirs a theory that different people like different play styles, but it's just a theory. Trolls = Hardcore
