So, lets assume that they dump a MASSIVE amount to build an MMO, being... Lets say... 250million dollars. Crazy money. Even at your rediculously small amount you gave in profit, which is complete crap, but lets assume. It would take, what? 4 years to make that much? WoW has been out how long? And it takes how many years to build an MMO? So, lets say it takes them 5 years. That is 330million in profit they would have made in that time. Allowing to not only make the new MMO, but even have money left over, with zero debt. So, even by your own cooked up numbers, you are STILL incorrect. |

The majority of the 10 million subscribers are Chinese pay as you play members, the NA and EU members are around 4 million according to various reports over the last 6 months or so... anyway, And cash shops in MMO's are the way all online games will end up going. It started in Asia, where F2P games supported by a cash shop proved to make more money than subscriptions. Then US companies like Acclaim started to port Asian games to NA, and brought the Cash Shop model with them. They then proved to the industry that this form of income also work for a US audience, so slowly, larger publishers started to try them out also, with the highest profile to date (before this) being SOE in EQ and EQ2. SOE also developed FreeRealms, to see if a F2P/CashShop model would really work in the US/EU, and quickly proved it did. EA, NCSoft and others then started to try it out, again, successfully. This then opened the doors for other publishers to start experiementing with this, and Blizzard is just the latest to do so, with these pets. It's predicted that within a few years Cash shops will be the norm over here, just like they are in Asia. Although, as its been pointed out in various developer interviews on this site, this does in turn mean the developers have to patch quicker, add more content more often, and ensure bugs are killed more quickly, all in order to keep people coming back (which the subscription only model does not do - you know you have a month at least, and can hope the players forget). However, despite the general negative press that cash shops often get - the only things you can normally buy are "fluff" items - no stat clothing, non combat pets, low speed mounts, and occasionally XP potions. Even Acclaim (who's games are F2P) only have fluff items, and understand that anything more would unbalance the game. So, don't panic too much, this wont change your games, and it wont effect how you play. And if its proved to be VERY successful, you may even find that within a few years the top title MMOs are changed to F2P with bigger cash shops, and you get to play WoW, EQ2, LOTRO etc for free. Which wont be so bad really.

it costed 200million to pay for WoW the day it was realsed it was basicly paid for lol box sell make a huge diffrence and with the ups and downs of the world 66million dollars would be straight profit for blizzard which is good i said that with the number cut out for expenses lol http://www.digitalbattle.com/2009/05/07/activision-blizzard-reports-huge-profits/
It has costed blizzard around 560million to make diablo thus far and around 300million for starcraft 2 so not alot of money left over each year from WoW Blizzard is a stocking company people buy shares where it gets most of its funding for its games so infact that 100million is going back to the stock holders making them keep stocks in blizzard to keep the world turning.... |
