Not having the "standard" skill bar that has been the norm for many years now, but I'm starting to see MMO's trying to go more "twitch" based. The Chronicles of Spellborn is an example of a skill bar I couldnt handle...it rotated and crap and you also had to aim your reticule otherwise you didnt hit. I'm getting older and twitch-styled or shooter-styled gameplay is kinda hard for me. I'm just not good at it, therefore not very fun for me. |

Unrealistic combat. If you get stabbed by a sword, you should die. If you get shot by an arrow, you should die. If you get burnt to a crisp, you should die. How to counteract these dreadful, deadly things? It's called a shield. Or some magic bubble. Or using your weapon to parry attacks. Or leather armor that absorbs magical energy. Something other than, "I just got hit by 50 attacks, but since I'm level 5102841902750129687109284 and they're level "FAIL", my health is not even half gone." Obviously, I understand there's room for compromise. Multiple sword strikes to kill someone is acceptable... or multiple arrows... or a bleed effect. Armor is there for a reason, right? Sure, that's cool. But I'd really like to see more active (passive) defense. That sounds weird, but it basically means that instead of getting hit by what looks like an incredibly deadly weapon for... 4 damage, because you're level X, you raise your shield (or absorb or parry or whatever) and actually "block" (strange concept!) the attack for 0 damage. In effect, it's really the same thing. You either take a small amount of damage or just block it completely. Except one is more realistic than the other. In this type of game, everyone would have less hitpoints and there'd be a less strict death penalty. Still, a bit more realism would be cool, especially in something that you're doing 85-90% of the time. That's just a little pet peeve, and I know most developers don't care because it means having to polish and time their animations correctly... which isn't easy. Besides that, I'd agree with most of the other things people listed: Bad collision detection, slopes being too steep to run up (like a wimpy little hill), and I'll throw in bad animations as a whole. I really do wish someone used some type of technology that was cheap but effective at making good animations so we could finally be on par with single-player games. Imagine customized animations for almost everything you did in the game world...

I've had that happen to me before too. I was standing somewhere no one should have been able to hit me (behind a column, if I remember right) and they were shooting THROUGH the column to hit me. I couldn't hit them. I could just watch their shots coming through solid concrete or whatever it was supposedly made of and plow into me. That's not fun at all. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |

-Combat that consists of using the same attack again and again, so boring! I like to have lots of skills to switch it up and vary depending on who I'm attacking -Spending forever looking for some person to complete a quest, it can be ok if you get to go somewhere interesting but I hate it when you spend all your time looking for someone and not enough time playing. -This is a small one as I know a lot of people don't mind, but point and click is really annoying to me if there's no keyboard system for moving and attacking - Dana |

-Poor chat window -Quests like this...."We were suppose to get a shipment of beer yesterday, but the caravan never arrived. Go find it, but becareful it might be dangerous." Then you go about 20 feet down the path and there it is, in plain sight, not even 30 seconds away. -Abilities with long cooldowns. These are generally powerful, and i get their suppose to be balanced by having a long cooldown. But I never used them. I would always think to myself "If i use it now, i wont be able to use it for 30 more minutes, and i might need it". So i end up never using it. -Potions, same as before, I don't like running out so i just save them and never use them. -Once you reach a high level and have to go to someone to learn your new abilities, but the trainer is a lower level than you. >< -Villages in the middle of no where, that have no actual houses. Maybe buildings but no one where people would sleep. -No children models in town. There have to be young people somewhere -Multiple levels inbetween getting new abilities. Or levels that get nothing new, just a boring level to ding too. -Quests that make you run long distances at a low level when you have no mount, just to have to run all the way back in the end.

It would be nice to always fight something different but it would be so much work it would never happen.

Good reply! and yes, even a color-change would have helped. -- |

Not really small things, but here are some personal irks. - Theme park world design that drags you by the nose down narrow, predefined paths. A violator that comes to mind immediately for me is WAR. - Static crafting resources always located in the same (static) places. Who did it right? Pre-CU Star Wars Galaxies. - Non dynamic loot where if there's any difference at all, a 'quality' item will be 2% better than its 'average' counterpart. Who did it right? Asheron's Call and Pre-CU SWG. Who did it wrong? Every other MMORPG I've ever played. Okay, one truly small thing. - Guns in fantasy settings. |
