So i've had alot of interest in this game and even bought the game but really never had the time to try it or well was put off by the fact that many people told me it needed a huge time investment and was for hardcore gamers only. Well recently browsing the forums i say a thread called "Eve sucks" and if i read it right it was very much saying that EVE is a very casual game and playing the actual game instead of racking up skills for auto training is really your choice than anything. So my question is hardcore or casual?

--This question has been answered and i've started playing the game but for other questions now that im in game please look for my last post on thread.

It's as casual or as hardcore as you want to make it.

Simple as that.

But it is not for everyone, only you can decide if you like it.

Dude, there is a 14 day trial on Eve's webby.

There is a 21 day trial on Steam.

I suggest you give it a shot, I tried it once, didn't think much of it.  I'm kinda giving it another shot and I'm thinking of subscribing BECAUSE you can play it casually-ish if you so choose.

Both playstyles fit comfortably within Eve.

Combat based PvP isn't really all that casual-gamer freindly, but I suspect there are many people who play Eve casually and still pvp.

Combat based PvE is a really good candidate for the casual gamestyle, but you can also mission in a hardcore style too.

Noncombat based PvE is also a good candidate for the casual gamestyle tag, but there are hardcore miners/traders ingame too.

Basically, take all your preconcieved conceptions of playstyle, PvP, PvE, Levelling and grinding from traditional MMO's and throw them out the window, they really don't apply to Eve.

It isn't so much about trying the game out myself because many games are casual at first then turn hardcore and vice versa plus i already have the game so its not the problem. Main reason im asking is because well i simply do not have time to play hardcore anymore, on a good week i get 15 hours of gaming on average and my schedule is really varied so i cant play games where raiding and stuff is done on a regular basis but sometimes i can. So yeh with my time in mind do you think ill be competitive in the game and fairly good? due to timing reasons i was just thinking about going back to wow because well face it that game has mastered casual but i could go with EVE. Also note that i should be getting alot more gaming time after 3-4 months where i plan on playing eve so don't suggest it just for the sake of me trying it, you know?

It depends on what your doing and what type of corp you join.

You could join a high sec corp that does a little bit of everything casually or you could join a 0.0 alliance and actively have to defend space and that could lead to a whole mess of hours played in a week.

As for me i play in 0.0 but my corp knows im casual and they don't depend on me to actively defend space every night.

I log in, join up with corpies and log off in an hour or so.

I play about ten hours a week.

As EVE is a sandbox it can (almost) suit whatever playstyle you want. The thing is you have to realize that time played will have a direct impact on what things you can do in the sandbox. So it will be about expectation management.

Do not take on goals within the game that playtime won't allow due to your time constraints and you will be fine.

While there is no grind for skills, there is a grind for in game credit. That being said, if you have the rl cash, you can overcome this in a legitimate fashion. You can buy game time and trade it to other players for in game credit.

These two points do allow a lot of people to play PvP focused characters casually. If PvP is not your thing, a lot of the PvE content suits regular but small amounts of time. Trading and industry are perfect for this.

Hope this helps.

Most of the games are 'hardcore' time sinks.

EVE is 'hardcore' in consequencies. Your time, your choice, your responsibility.

I know what you guys mean by what you put in is what you get from sandbox games but for example in darkfall to really enjoy the game and be any good you need to spend probably 25+ hours a week not saying its a bad things but just not my style, so in that regards what would you say is the average time investment needed? also are there any gameplay aspects that you need to be online everyday for, darkfall example again: when you have a war you expected to be online everyday and fight or raiding games where dungeons reset every 24h and you must do them everyday if you wanna be any good kinda thing. I don't really like to be forced to play everyday or do specific things like that so ye.

Darkfall is no sandbox, it just lacks content.

It's both a sandbox and doesn't have much content. But I could say the same of EVE really. I havent seen much content added over the years ive played. I'm still killing the same rats ive always have. Only new thing I've seen them add was T3 and sleeper

Remember Rabbids cant play MMO's, but they can dance!

This game is about as casual as you can get. I play for weeks at a time and sometimes i only sign on to reskill couple times a week. Depends on my mood.

(AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH dances with beloved Empress Jamyl Sarum)

Everyone on MMORPG.com before every thread put the letters IMO as you and I dont speak for the gaming community or anyone else.

Playing: SWTOR, Eve Online, and World of Tanks.

Playing: Guild Wars

Well... I guess it depends on the way you play, like what a lot of other people have said. If you do mission running, then I suppose it can be considered casual, as long as you don't take any new missions that you know you won't have time to complete within the bonus. But it can be very addicting though... a few times I told myself that I would log off after an hour, only to find that I've been playing for more than two hours... But thankfully though, skill training can actually be done while you're offline, so you don't have to log on twenty-four seven in order to train skills.

As a fellow new player, I would recommend that you read the wikis as well. They have been a great source of information for me.

Main characters:
Jinn Gone Quiet (Guild Wars)
Princess Pudding (Guild Wars)
