I should begin this post by saying that I've been spending a lot of time checking out both Dragon Age and SWTOR, and stating up front that I love the idea of having deep roleplaying options in an MMOG.

But here's the problem I foresee - how will any party agree on what path to choose? If you're in a good group, the ability to make choices that affect the storyline sounds like a dream come true. But what if you're grouped with a griefer, or even someone with different priorities?

Here's a good example: I was watching on G4 the other night a scenario where two Sith Empire players had boarded a Star Destroyer and were confronting the captain about why he wasn't following orders. The party had the choice to let the captain live or kill  him. Now, the Bioware dev then mentioned that he would show the Sith player kill the captain and earn Dark Force points. So, if you're Sith, it's in your best interest to always pick the evil option since it makes you stronger. But what if you're not a Sith, and you would prefer the captain to live so he could help you down the road? Then you're screwed.

Honestly, I see this playing out even worse on the Alliance side, where I'm sure Jedi characters will always have to pick the goody two shoes option in order to preserve their Force points.

Now, the only way around this is to allow players to redo missions. But doesn't that kill any sense of immersion or permanency? The reason I'm very interested in Dragon Age is because your character has to make tough choices that can affect them for their entire career. I'd have to think that SWTOR will need to be the same to be a true Bioware RPG.

Anyhow, just curious if anyone else is concerned about how grouping will go down in this game.

I've been wondering the same thing.  Because I'm sure I would get pretty mad if I wanted the reward for doing a certain path and we ended up taking a different one.  Or if I wanted to be a certain alignment ( like you stated).

We will have to see, but this may be a game breaker for many people.

I don't think anybody is 100% or even 10% sure on how the grouping will work for choice based quests. As for grouping with griefers. Don't? I know, easier said then done, just try and avoid the ass clowns, every game has them, and I'm sure this game will have plenty but they aren't hard to spot.

Grouping with somebody with different priorities is completely unknown. I'm fine with it either way, I look forward to seeing peoples reactions when something does not go according to plan. Should spice up the game a bit.

Here's a good example: I was watching on G4 the other night a scenario where two Sith Empire players had boarded a Star Destroyer and were confronting the captain about why he wasn't following orders. No, not sure where you go that, maybe you heard wrong. Actually they are constantly reminding us Sith can go LS and Republic can go DS, you can even stay gray. The only difference is the abilities you will obtain and how the world views you. That's pretty much all we know. Again, you won't be screwed, BioWare markets choice, and choosing to follow a path that suits you will not in any way gimp you.

Now, the only way around this is to allow players to redo missions. But doesn't that kill any sense of immersion or permanency? The reason I'm very interested in Dragon Age is because your character has to make tough choices that can affect them for their entire career. At this point, all we can do is speculate with out letting it get out of hand. I'm actually not trying to speculate on this, gives me a headache. But as I said I'm pretty much fine with what ever they throw at me when it comes to the quests. If it's redoable I'll enjoy the first time and the second. To me it will be no different then playing a game through a second time, it's still immersive. I just chose a different path to follow another story line. If it's one time only, should make for some interesting after party conversations eh?

Hopefully this helps. I wouldn't look into it to much  though, just wait for updates.

I am pretty sure that your alignment is not affected by choices others make. And since it is a MMO, there no doubt will be a way to replay many things.

I share the concerns of the OP, but it really doesn't help to start this every 2nd day when we know zero about it. Let's wait until more real facts come.

people don't group anymore in MMORPGs. you will probably see grouping considered as an exploit in future games.

Too true. MMO's are going to become so solo-oriented that the only point of other people being in the environment is so that you have someone to show your gear off to.

This has ALWAYS been the point of the MMO.

I know a few nancy pants honestly believe it's for the social aspect, but I see thier nanciness and raise them Diablo 2.

I dont understand why this is such a big ordeal. I can allready see it now "LFG Light side points only" and if there are any problems then you could easily talk to each other on what decision you are going to choose. Problem solved.

GMDumshiz "hello thank you for contacting Bioware customer support I heard you have witnessed a major exploit ... can you describe it"

SoloNutjob "so was running along and i saw this bounty hunter and jedi and i couldn't believe what they were doing together. the jedi would start fighting the mob and omg the bounty hunter would also start fighting the same mob. Now at first i thought this was just a mistake maybe they attacked the same mob accidentally. however i watched them for 10 minutes doing this travesty.

SoloNutjob "I think they were ..... um.... grouping"

GMDumshiz "thats awful if this is true I am sorry you had to witness such a horrible act. thank you for reporting this I will observe them myself

15 minutes later ......

GMDumshiz "oh my god how horrible I took care of those exploiting rotten bastards, that goes against everything in or code of conduct.

GMDumshiz "unfortunately using the "G-Word" is against our code of conduct as well and thus your account will be flagged with a warning. however im sure we at bioware will go easy on you as appreciation for your actions.

because soloing is so hard? here lets give mobs with basic attack power and defense, minimal HP and spells. because we wouldn't want to make it too hard or else the soloers would get their ego hurt.

Not hard at all, actually grouping is just as easy. I was just showing you It could be said both ways, but of coarse, you didn't get it. Let's play out a scenario.

Group Play

Tank keeps agro and puts out some DPS

Dps will DPS

Healers spam heals.

Players will avoid boss abilites.

Solo Play

Tank will DPS

Dps will DPS

Healers will Dps and heal themselves.

Players will avoid mob abilities.

Not in this one, your decisions are permanent, if chose to go down one path for a quest you won't ever have an opportunity to go down the other unless your reroll.

aw how cute come to defend his lack of skill, I know plenty about soloing because unlike the elite soloers I take part in all the pillars of  a MMO and not just pout and cry my way through a game in one.

Lack of skill? What gives you that idea.

And what MMO do you play out of curiosity.

I read or saw somewhere that the positive/negative effect of the decision is for whoever is running the mission. They are the only one who can make the choice of which way to go (kill the captain or let him live) and they are the only one effected by this choice RP wise.

So most likely you can run the mission several times as a group member. But you get one shot as the main player.

I just hope that whatever decision that is made can be made in the vacuum of roleplaying. I would hate to see people choose whether or not to kill the captain based on getting more xp (more boarding parties spawn) or a better loot drop (final boss Jedi drop).

In order to have an effective/popular solo game, you must reduce the difficulty of mobs and encounters.  If they are easier then by default they require less skill.  Saying you can solo in any modern mmo is hardly a reflection of skill.

Ok?

Thanks for your input. But what exactly means I lack skill without knowing what game I play currently. Please tell me, I'm curious.

I'm not defending anything. At no point in time has any defense shield been brought up to protect anything from the likes of you. I'm not even sure to what magnitude you could pose a threat to other than yourself. All i was simply saying was... Quoting from your previous statement was that you merely have a basic idea of what the combat system is let alone what mobs attack power and their HP. So now that i have written it out in crayon for the simple minded maybe now you will understand what i say. You don't know what you are talking about.

Not hard at all, actually grouping is just as easy. I was just showing you It could be said both ways, but of coarse, you didn't get it. Let's play out a scenario.

Group Play

Tank keeps agro and puts out some DPS, most of the time lead the group and have control of placement of mobs

Dps will DPS, without drawing agro, knowing thier skill rotation to maximize DPS

Healers spam heals. as well as buff and debuff mobs if need be, again without overagroing

Players will avoid boss abilites. use crowd control, pick up adds/pathers

Solo Play

players pull mob and faceroll or even auto attack thier way to victory.

 Fixed for you!

you don't even have to dodge boss attacks as a soloer because they are so insignificant that most can just take them. the only thing i worry about when i solo is "hope i kill this mob fast enough so i can chain pull".

as for what game i play, i spend most of my time in EQ2, though have been dabbling in AION.

pretty obvious that in pretty much any game you play now the solo mobs have very little attack power, very little spell damage, very little HP or Defense. they are made so that pretty much any class can kill them with ease. so if any class can kill them its come down to the lowest common denominator and when it comes down to that, it's the epitome of easy.

Nice way to evade the question, you insist I lack skill because I enjoy solo play, what you may not know is I enjoy grouping as well, I'm just not narrowminded and can see why people want solo play.

Also, I'm not currently playing a MMO. Go figure.

You SHOULD be worried about group play. In games that are 95% single player, groups don't often happen. Not in the MMO sense. There might be a zone or two not instanced where you can do like, FPS matches in an arena or something, but no true MMO.
