No, Borderlands isn't a MMORPG...at all. No persistant world and no massiveness outside of the "lobby." It's similar to almost every ARPG like Diablo, PSO, Sacred and all of them. I know some people consider PSO a MMO but it wouldn't count for my nor this sites definition. Plus Diablo has been out for more then 10 years so it's not like these are new types of games. On the other side, Hellgate London should have been an ARPG but Flagship wanted to make it an MMO which I personally feel is the cause of its failure. MMORPGs and ARPGs are two completely different genres and the one time that they tried to mix them was Hellgate. In fact the most recent succesful ARPG, Torchlight, didn't even launch with multiplayer... Anyway, Borderlands with its FPS, ARPG mix is not the future of MMOs, but it is a hell of a lot more entertaining then a lot of MMOs. Make games you want to play. |

More on topic, I've always championed gameplay over all else (making the player's decisions as deep and interesting as possible.) Instanced gameplay consistently provides a higher quality of gameplay. |

Thats becasue it is easier to do. You could turn a game like Oblivion or Mass Effect into a multiplayer game with four people playing and there really wouldn't be too much of a difference. One person does a quest - it's done for good. But even with four people playing cooperatively or competitively together the story wouldn't change all that much. One of the things I like about ARPGs is that you can get a lan group with your friends and play through the story. MMOs don't really offer the kind of story where you make a difference. Even "sandbox" games which allow you to change the world don't have the same effect. Plus the replayability comes from the addiciton of loot gathering, which is kinda like many MMOs without the time commitment. Make games you want to play. |

Oh and 4 people playing together is not a MMO as in Massively Multiplayer Online RPG, FPS, etc.. Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2. Game(s) I Am Currently Playing: GW2 (+LoL and BF3) |

I am all for different playstyles and hybrid game formats. But this trend does concern me, MMO companies seem to follow any success in the gaming industry without forethought. If this style of game is a success it won’t be long before MMO’s try to emulate this success in their game. Driven by the desire for more revenue they seem to think any game play style is compatible with any other game play style. Want to raid in a 12 man team? Fine. Want to raid as a solo team? Fine. Some things don’t mix but in the desire to attract all, MMO’s are becoming a hopeless mush of playstyles. |

No, it's not revolutionizing the MMORPG genre, because it isn't an MMORPG. Nor is it anywhere near MMO. I wish people would stop posting advertisement threads when they don't even know what the god damn game is. Unique upcoming indie space-based mining and combat game - Miner Wars. |

Wrong on every level. Borderlands isn't an MMO, nor is it the future of MMOs. |

If to be classified as an MMORPG you have to be a boring grindfest that is severely limited and boring... Then I don't want an MMORPG.
I honestly don't care WHAT the game is "officially" whether that's MMORPG, MMOFPS, or MMOMGSOMANYLETTERS!!111 All that matters to me is that it's fun. That's it. I've never cared what others think. Fun is all you need. 0 else matters. If you said "Half Life 2 is an MMORPG AND ITS AWESOME!!" and it was fun, I would download it and say "THIS MMORPG IS AWESOME!!!!" Because I don't care what it's called, I don't care what nerds believe it to actually be. I only care that I'm enjoying myself and having fun. |
