Stop destroying this genre.

Your killing me, your killing us.

Real gamers are becoming extinct because of these mega companies with the suits dictating how a game should be made.

2020, real gamers become extinct.

Like cold lemonade, we both got stomach aches.

Um, there are always games coming out that are for "real gamers" as you call it. Whatever a REAL gamer is, I don't know.

Dawntide, Darkfall Online, Fallen Earth.. these are hardly mainstream games that are a result of Blizzard's success.

can't figure out if this is troll post or if he is serious. SOE made true hardcore gamers in 1999 with everquest. if you don't like the modern online game 1997-current then go qq on gamefaqs.com

It is all about the benjamins, the days of actually using innovation and crafting a great game has been thrown out the door right now.

i'm getting real fed up with all these types of threads on here.

why blame the companies? it's the consumers who dictate what companies produce.it's the consumers/gamers who buy these games and supports them. it's the gamers who buy gold and powerleveling services. it's the gamers who are responsible for the shitty online communities and constant trolling.

Original EQ up to LDoN was a great game in my opinion. Champions of Norrath was also a fun and great game from them.

But SOE today is RMT, Cashshop, and poor games.

Good comunities is what makes good games. Whatever else, there will always be a couple of good comunities around.

Learn the art of dying and you will be liberated from It.

Many of us are going to die while the genre is dying.

I'm dying and there's no good MMORPG's. But you know what...that's okay...because I accept dying.

Save me from this abyss of Hell Serge!

There are plenty of good MMO's.  Just because you don't like what's currently out.  Doesn't mean there aren't any good ones.

Correct, it just means there aren't any high production-value and polished games for the niche groups, which is terrible. In food there's something for everyone, in movies there's still genres for everyone and the same applies to music. Why isn't this the case when it comes to mmorpg's?

maybe because movies, music and food have been around a lot longer than mmorpg's? heck, food's been around since at least the early 80's!

It doesn't have to cost many millions of dollars and multiple years of production time to produce a niche food, music or movie.  Things like food and music can be produced by a single person. MMOs currently require a team to make a full game as we know it. Like it or not the minimum costs to make a polished MMO are too expensive for many  niche markets.

Yes to simplify the answer you hit it on the nose exactly. The major reason for this is the modern day cost to create a game. The debt that a developer would ensue trying to create a GREAT game, would be something any board would turn a thumbs down to.

This is why we see a lot of games delivering bare bones structure,a world, dot the mobs, link the quests, cheap crafting, make some instances, deliver a carrot on the stick ,witch is the drops, throw in some PVP and that is the game over done.

Then developers THINK they are getting cute by delivering us a bunch of character customization sliders to fiddle with ,that will have no bearing on the game what so ever. They dicker back and forth with full loot or non full loot. They try to draw a fine line between grind and not grind. They try to bring in niche ideas to sell that same watered down product, like flying or players can play as dragons,or design that one OP class to give those that want no challenge a place in the game.

It all adds up to the SAME pile of cheap junk,i do not see it changing much, these puny small niche ideas will continue to roll in,but the core structure of these games will not change.

Square Enix without question is one developer trying to incorporate change[sub class/Renkai system],this new game FFXIV will be interesting to see if they continue down that path.On the outside ,to me anyhow,it looks like a game that has again been watered down to a simplistic mode by removing many aspects of a RPG game, however they are adding in new aspects,so we will have to wait and see how it plays out.To me it looks like they are trying to implement a CASUAL ACTION type MMORPG.

Do not for one minute expect anything new or creative from Korea,AION does not have it in the least Lineage did not have it and none of the other games have it.As much you might hate SOE,you better hope they still have the desire to spend on a large budget game, because i do not see creativity coming from anywhere else.

It seems to me that most of the people I used to play with are now the dying breed.

I started back in the M59 and NWN days .. now we are going out to pasture. What made gaming *GAMING* back in those days has gone. Now its all about "market appeal" and other catchy slogans etc. Its the way of the world people. Same thing happens in every genre. I remember back when REM was what people today would call a niche market. Remember when REE was first released .. back in '81. Then in the late 80's they signed with Warner and became "Mainstream", same thing happened to MMORPG's.

We were once a Niche market .. now its alot more mainstream. Hell most people now know what an "Online game" is even if they only equate it to "Farmtown" or some shit on facebook. Back when I first started we were the "strange people" that played on computers .. now its all over.

RIP the online gamers i knew and loved .. hello the masses.

So its only gaming when its a small group of people playing? What the "crowd" would call the outcast I guess? Whats so bad about having the masses? Now companies are willing to dump millions to make a game that could be awesome. Or does it need to be shitty made by some indie company? There is nothing wrong with a market going mainstream.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

"Free to play, pay to win""

10/30/09 3:13:45 AM#20

In my opinion, if anything is destroying the genre, it's the people playing.

After all, if people keep paying monthly fees for mediocre games , what's to stop gaming companies for delivering that mediocracy in the first place?

Just my 2 cents.
