As much as I like the game I honestly believe FE is not ready for a free trial program. We need the game to be a bit more top heavy so we don't have a thousand freaking players in the starting zones. The near 50k players (5-10k on at anytime) is more than enough atm. Leave the free trials for a year or so from now. Weekends are the worst since most people actually work on the week days and everyone is trying to get some play time on their day off.

About the downloading times... I noticed that when the patch process seems to go very slow, if you cancel it and the re-run the game to patch again it will be much more fast. That has happened me before in EQ2, so that was the clue to try it here, and it worked. I had to do it three times i think, but from 2days it was saying moved to 40 minutes. So try it. Cancel the update when it start to go slow and run it again. You should notice a difference.

If you want to argue how you may not get the full 14 day trial you were promised for FREE, then take the issue up with Icarus. I honestly believe they shouldn't have given away anything away for free at this point and say screw the non payers. If money is tight now for you, then wait for many of the official reviews to be published and stay in your current mmorpg. I truly believe, not all, but the majority are probably just F2P players looking to try something for free. thats my point, if iwas paying i was pissed as hell, and its not about to et the 14 days our of my trial... its about a compney that try to get ppl to sub, but in doing so that do just the opposite,
A. for ppl who do $$$ for the game. it sucks,+6-10k trials realy get the lagfest going. if the server are not up to the volume they should have not giving away all those trials.
B. for the trials ppl, as i stated before, dl a game for over 4 days is silly, how can a gameing company thinks to even attract more people if they cant get the game going?.
C. i understand $$$ is always a problem with gaming compneys, but there are other ways (better ways) to get people into your game and still keep a decent income. for starter u can say " hey we know the game is far from being complete, but we do need money so how about we take 5$ from ppl as a small income source and let player to play on the cbt or w/e. on the other hand, on today ,erket gaming compneys do the opposite, lets lunch the as early as we can, sale some box, and from there will go on, and icarus did just about every mistake they can over the last month or so. so as i said, i stick to my point. not saying its a bad game, not good, cant realy say anything about cuz i havent got to play it yet.

Yeah, the large influx of trials caused some major server bumps. It really sucks.
"and icarus did just about every mistake they can over the last month or so." .... What? They've made two mistakes so far. 1) The Server has some issues 2) Letting trials in so soon I like the fact they get trials right out of the gates, but a lot of the subscribers are still in S1, so the trials are saturating it and causing tons of lag. I'm also thinking there may be backlash with the trials, people who really should never have played the game complaining about aiming and crafting times. ____________________________ "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but I know World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein |

I played Sunday a couple hours before work and the game was running fine. But then I was up by Chriss Pass and there are less people up there.
So far from what I have seen though, weekends do tend to be a bit rough. But then most mmo's I have played the weekends seem to be the busiest, so that is nothing new. Anyone who doesn't understand this is inexperienced in mmos.
I have mixed feelings as far as the free trial. First off, they had some kind of distrribution problem or something because I could never find a retail box and opted to buy a digital download. I'm more of a conventional guy, so getting a nonphysical copy was kind of a big step for me. Some people might not try it at all if they can't get a physical copy, so a free trial might be a good incentive. On the other hand, you might have an influx of people that have no intention of subing and just want to cause mischief. |

I haven't logged in for about a week due to lack of time but when I tried on Sunday I was stuck at character selection screen for 5 mins then decided to give up as it was obvious the 'Sunday Blues' were in effect. It's a great game and I really enjoy playing I just hope they can correct the server issues. I have to admit I did expect server lag this weekend with the trial. |

EQ (MT/EMarr), WoW, EQ2, L2, VG, CoH, DDO, LoTRO, WAR, Neocron2, Requiem, AO, AoC,SWToR, Aion, plus a metric ton of trials and betas (in no set order) Waiting on TSW since Dark Millenium was canned. |

However I lose my interest on the free trial if everyone has been playing long enough to have maxed characters and everyone is in the high zones. So if they do decide to wait for a year or longer, as you suggested, to offer a free trial, then I highly doubt I would even try the game out at that point and would set my sights on all the games that have come out in that year.
Companies tend to wait too long to get the free trial out, because they want to get every sale dollar they can. However they shut out a huge portion of possible players. I'm far from the only person who is not interested in the box price, and I know I'm not the only one to lose interest in the free trial if the game has been out for a long time by the time it is offered.
Companies need to offer in game items and early access( a real amount of time like a month or so) for preordering, and then just offer a two week trial and the sub price once the game has launched. I'd be interested in the data showing the preorder sales numbers of most MMOs to launch in the past year compared with the box sales after release up until the free trial was offered. I would bet that the free trial and first week open sales are exponentially larger then the rest of the sales up to the free trial phase. And all that time could be used to get people into the game while it is new and interesting and get the sub numbers higher. |

I dont get the complaints of the updates taking days to complete. I installed on Friday, started the patching, went out shopping with the old lady for 3 or so hrs, came back, watched a movie and was ready to play. I think it took a total of 5 hrs for me to fully patch. Also, I dont the screams about it was too early for a free trial. This is honestly the perfect time for it. The game is new, there is still a good buzz. Let people try the game and then buy it. It creates more loyalty to a small indie dev imo. I think that is the biggest error Darkfall made, not giving a short free trial. You are not a big name dev, you need to tempt me into checking out your game. |

I installed the game on two different systems over the weekend. There are some real problems with the patcher.
Vista-Box
Overall it was one of the worst patcher experiences I have had for a MMOG. I have no idea why they didn't rebuild a new install with all the content included. Especially considering the influx of trial players.

I beta tested FE for a bit near the end. Loved the atmosphere, but was never able to get time to test much. Some of the gripes listed in this thread, I had issues with. FPS dropped really low any town I went to, Lag was real bad at time (as expected in beta IMO), and the real game seemed so much different than the tutorial. I never got the time to get used to not kickin butt like in the tutorial is all...
I got a trial key and will see what I missed.
;)

Took me about 5 hours to download. Not the best downloader - I've seen libtorrent based downloaders do it 3x faster (5 gigs) and consistently. "Installing" took half hour. I don't know what it needed to install, because from what I can see FE doesn't use package files (put all the data in pseudo file system) - just copy & paste. Which I'm sure is going to take a toll on a lot of people's harddrives. Sigh.. even Blizzard's been doing package files for 15 years. It's very common, and should be standardized.
Other than that, and a few glitches, it's been pretty easy. |
