Are you pressured to Like/Hate a game?

I'm sure we are all familiar with the topics started to question how good an mmo is or how statistics prove that a certain game will fail or is currently doing poorly. On other occasions, we see topics started with the attempt to shed a more positive perspective of the game they like and make strides to persuade the masses to consider giving a particular game a try even against speculation.

How do you respond to the strong opinions of other gamers (good or bad)? If a topic is started simply to encourage trolling against a particular game or a particular type of game, do you instinctively join in, in order to feel accepted by the masses, do you ignore the topic or do you post your own honest opinion about the situation. In a debate, if most players are posting negative comments about a game you happen to like or might be interested in, does this pursued your original opinion about that game or do you hold fast to your opinions regardless of popular opinion? If a game is receiving more praise and attention than another game that you were actually more interested in, does popular demand sway your initial interest in a less popular title?

I noticed how games like Warhammer, AoC and Darkfall were praised as potentially being "WoW Killers" and at the time, it was considered a cool thing to engage in massive debates and conversations about how great the games were going to be and how much players were looking forward to playing it over WoW. After the release of these games, many topics stating disappointment in the game and development direction changed the climate of the original hype and motivation for playing these mmorpgs eventually died down. Were these titles really that bad or were we just so easily persuaded by popular demand (hype)?

Would you play a game that interested you but lost popularity or is your interest in a game dependant on popular demand alone? We all have strong opinions about our gaming habits, the type of games we like and the type we don't (good or bad/right or wrong). If someone stated that the game you loved to play was losing members daily, or servers were closing, would you join the domino effect and leave the game as well? We all are entitled to our opinions and we are also entitled to express them but how much does one's opinion influence yours in particular? How easily or often are you persuaded or pressured to like/hate a game?

I never put any real in pre-launch interviews, video clips, reviews or faboi beta-tester reports.

If I try a game, and find it doesn't appeal to me even though it is a reasonable enough product, I say nothing.  The same if it's F2P, because at least they aren't charging for it. If I play a game that is just atrocious I'll say so, but if it's truly abysmal and they expect us to pay a monthly sub for it, I let rip.  I figure I could save someone from wasting their cash.

I love reading constructive topics, either positive towards a game or negative, aslong it's constructive. To be honost I don't care what the majority of people/gamers think about a game, the most important factor for me is and always be if I myself am enjoying myself, regardless how the majority might think, I do and try to be as honost possible and like to shed a different light on certain subjects.

I noticed how games like Warhammer, AoC and Darkfall were praised as potentially being "WoW Killers" and at the time, it was considered a cool thing to engage in massive debates and conversations about how great the games were going to be and how much players were looking forward to playing it over WoW. I believe people have far to high expectations, I myself am pretty picky when it comes to getting into a MMORPG that suites me and already know that what I truly would want is simply not possible yet but perhaps in 3/4 years from now. I will not complain about a game if it doesn't meet my expectations, there tons of people who infact might enjoy what I don't so who am I to judge a game for others then myself. I also know what I want out of a MMORPG experiance many games simply do not deliver that what I want out of a MMORPG experiance, but that doesn't makes those games bad games, pure games I might dislike.

Would you play a game that interested you but lost popularity or is your interest in a game dependant on popular demand alone?

I can only judge a game by having played or tested it myself, no amount of topics or even subnumbers would change my mind, as only I am the one that is able to change my mind after I experianced it myself.

We all have strong opinions about our gaming habits, the type of games we like and the type we don't (good or bad/right or wrong). If someone stated that the game you loved to play was losing members daily, or servers were closing, would you join the domino effect and leave the game as well? Obvious if gameplay suffers, meaning with MMORPG's to me it's important to be able to socialize on all fronts, if that seems near to impossible I would be time to indeed leave.

Overall I never felt presured into hating or loving a game by anyone

I don't give a shit what anyone says.

I play and stick with games I enjoy playing. Seriously how many people say Eve is a sci-fi screen saver yet I've been playing Eve for over two years now.

I promote a game like Ryzom that at most has 5k subs, I even go as far as saying Ryzom is better than every themepark released since WoW.

Same goes for Darkfall, Fallen Earth and Wurm.

I would never feel like I have to play a game just to please the masses.

For anyone reading this if you enjoy a game be proud of it and your small community don't let these guys make you feel like crap for it.

Play whats fun for you.

Honestly this would be one boring ass forum if everyone had the same positive or negative opinion on a particular game.

Like what you want and don't be afraid to let people know.

PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

It's all about the sum of the parts.  There were certain things I didn't like about pre-CU SWG, but overall I enjoyed the game.  There were many things I liked a lot about wow, but overall left the game because of forced raiding and bind on pickup.  WAR was like mmo lite compared to wow (which is mmo lite in and of itself).  Just so many variables that it comes down to each unique individual and what components mix together the best for them.  Really quite a crazy market when you really think about it.  You also should dismiss pretty much anything anyone says about a mmo.  Their opinion truly means nothing when you're dealing with so many diverse variables.  Heck, my opinion shouldn't mean much to you either.  One man's trash is another's treasure pretty much sums it up.

What he said but with WAAAY more venom.  I try games, make the call for myself and take it from there.  Never have I stuck with a game that I hated because of what others thought.  I've also played games others have no interest in simply because I think they were fun.  I'd actually like to see someone try and sway my opinion in person....

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

If anyone plays a game they hate because they feel pressured to, they have some issues that need to be dealt with.

I pretty much agree with metalhead's take on it. Play what you enjoy. It doesn't matter how big/small the community is (mostly) or what forum users think about it. If it interests you, try it out. If you like it, stick with it!

Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: GW2, ArcheAge

There are so many games to play, so little time. There are a lot of good games I've played and supported and will continue to support if I believe the game is good or even highly overlooked. I'm not sure how many players feel the same way, but it's always good to know that there are still those that go with their own flow. :)

I play what I want to play. If I dont like a game, I wont play it, simple as that. If people want to pressure me into a game, they can pay for me to play it

I pretty much play what I want to and what I like tho. Though I like playing with my irl friend / friends so if he really hates the game I will play something that both like because its more fun with friends even if the game is little worse.

But what other ppl I don't know think of the games.. I don't give a shit.

Agreed, couldn't care less what anyone says about a particular game, if I like it, I'll play it, if I don't, I won't.  End of story.  That doesn't mean I won't be vocal about why I do or do not like a particular game and people can take it with a handful of salt if they want.  If we're not willing to discuss games, why be on a forum to begin with?

Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more
Relatively Recently (Re)Played: HL2 (all), Halo (PC, all), Batman:AA, ME, BS, DA, FO3, DS, Doom (all), LFD1&2, KOTOR, Portal 1&2, Blink, lots more
Now Playing: Skyrim
Hope: None

Does this include the people that actually LIKE and PLAY WoW too? Or is this statement of "be yourself and be proud of what you enjoy playing" type thing only for people that enjoy games made by smaller companies with fewer subscribers?  (I have to ask this, because the comment is being made on a site that is INFAMOUS for being full of WoW haters and WoW PLAYER haters.)

Because if you're including ALL games....I agree.

I don't see why it's anyone else's damn business what games I play and their opinions could NOT matter to me less. Until someone besides ME is paying for my games and monthly gaming bill....anyone who takes issue with what I like...can just kiss my behind.

If I was locked away in a room, no window or door to leave by, no tangible human or animal contact, no communication other than via an MMO then yes my world would be skewed enough to believe that such entertainment avenues warranted such strong emotions.

Fortunately for me I don't live within such a confined space, my view is such that I either play for escapism or not at all.

Nope I decide on my own what to like (FFXI) and hate (WoW). People can recommend a game to me saying it is good but that wont make me say oh it's a good game I got to get it.

The only time I read the Hate or love posts about a game is when I am considering trying it.   If they add reasons why they dislike or love a game it is worth my time reading. If they just make claims without any reason I just disregard it.

Personally I dislike all current MMO's because I am not playing any right now.

I more or less do the same thing, however as soon as I see the words Hate/Love used it's invariably going to be used by some extremist player venting their frustrations/anger and I totally disregard that response, it's counter-productive and only highlights that some ppl really do need a mental health check to come back to reality.

Other than that I read the reviews and take them at face value, there really is only one way to find out if the game is going to be enjoyable and thats to give it a try, more free trials is definately in order rather than having to rely on over-zealous or spiteful players opinions.

My enjoyment of an MMO has nothing to do with popular opinion.

If I am enjoying a game I literally could not care less about what others think.|
If I am not enjoying a game, I will not continue to play.

I do, however, read reviews to decide which games to try.

Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.

To be pressured into anything is a sign of insecurity or longing to be accepted.  After you reach a certain age, you learn that you're an individual and most of what others think of you doesnt matter.
