A small article about LotRO. The expansion video looks sick. |

What went wrong? Nothing. It's one of the more successful MMOs out there. Good release, healthy servers, steady growth and well-received expansions.

Very true, when was the last time a game had such a nice clean release. For those that will say WoW, please remember WoW had a terrible release. |

Agreed, a good game does not have to be a wow breaker. Even if one of those would be nice these days |

I didn't mean to attack WoW in my statement, is just that some people I know are quick to say that comment. If it sounded like an attack, my apologies. |

I didn't mean for it to sound like I was defending WoW either. I only used WoW to show that the smooth launch of LOTRO didn't really make up for the higher level content at launch. |

nothing went wrong far as i'm aware. just because it doesn't have over million subscribers doesn't make it failure. 250,000-500,000 is still success it's just people think oh WoW has 11 million worldwide so everyone expects over 2 million success it is but not the minium to be called success. lord the rings is success it's still gaining players and no signs of dying mmo. so please OP explain what in your eyes went wrong. |

he did complain about the PvP, but I don't get his point... As another poster said - it is a successful game. Perhaps it is just another "It didn't kill WoW so the game is a failure" theory. |

LOTRO went wrong...hmmm. Well so far it listed as a successful game in the MMO world, if the person who started this post was comparing it to WOW well then I'm just confused. I did play LOTRO for a number of months but I actually stopped playing it due to playing EVE, WAR and WOW I didn't have enough time to really get into another game. Lag and Severs- pretty smooth, Art Style and Graphics - amazing to me, Cinematics and Story - very impressed. Animations and UI - great in every way, Sound- pretty epic in my book. Cost is now $10.00 and it's been that for awhile now, some ppl may think it's a strategy to keep ppl playing or get new ones to join or have ppl return...I wish more MMO's developers would look at the $10.00 a month and think that was an acceptable price for a monthly charge. I would say PVP and having to log from your toon and selecting another toon is the only thing I don't enjoy, but I don't think the PVP is bad, just not as what I would of expect. Back up to WOW, cause I have a feeling this post was regarding it in some way. Most games will probably never hit the 11mill mark WOW has made, but there are a lot of MMO's coming out and that are at now that will drop those numbers...I know it won't hit over night, but ppl will get tired of patch after patch updates to make the game grand and of course they'll come back to play Cataclysm and quit again for awhile when that gets tiresome. WOW probably has over a million gold farmers with multiple accounts and why wouldn't they every MMO has them, this one has the largest fan base for a paid MMO that I know of. As I look at it LOTRO is a very successful game, with a slow progression and I will shortly be back to playing it. Awaiting release: Guild Wars 2(August 2012), Elder Scroll MMO (2013), and Torchlight MMO (Oct 2014)
Failed to impress: STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV. |

It's from WOWRiot, so that might explain the silly title. |

lol, didn't catch that - just went straight to article, yeah might be a clue. So actually, since it didn't find anything very wrong with LOTRO, it is almost a rave review considering the source. |

Yeah, the article seems to imply (not terribly well-written) that the problem with LotRO is lack of meaningful pvp. But if you asked most of LotRO's playerbase they would probably answer lack of pvp is what "went right" with LotRO. Note that Turbine is not a publicly-owned company like Sony or Activision Blizzard. It doesn't need 11 million subs to make its owners a good profit. The estimated 300k subs that LotRO has are probably more than enough.

It went wrong when the Original Developers sold off Middle Earth Online to Turbine and it became Lord of the Rings Online. MEO was going to be great. They didn't have license to the movie, only Tolkien's books, and were trying to develop a world that wasn't a plot based game, but rather throwing you into Middle Earth and allowing you to be apart of the most epic fantasy world that's ever been. Instead, they released LoTRO. So so so sad.
As far as what happened after that, I quit paying attention to it when it saw the huge list of changes from MEO to LoTRO. |
