Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. |
This thread is following another. Wanted to find out why you group. So going to add a poll. Here is my view of why we group. First let me say I only group out of necessity, or i am being nice to help someone out. Grouping in MMORPGs usually are for three purposes. All three purposes are for inherently greedy purposes. This is regardless of what someone says they are grouping for. The first purpose: Usually a very tough boss mob or mobs that is part of a quest will require a group. So it is necessary, thus done for greed. Usually done so for the reward at the end. Second purpose: You group once again to fight mobs or boss mobs for loot/item drops! The only reason you are even there is to get a chance at that (X) item you really want!! So you can be that UBER..L33+ character you envision yourself as! Third purpose: You group up with people for pvp. Soley to R0xx0r your enemies and to build reputations/status! Reputation rewards is the greed aspect in most cases! While I hear every other reason why we should group. The real reason are the above three. Why grouping is driven in some cases. If you say"I group because I like the interaction with other people" you lie!!!! You do it soley for something that will add to your characters growth. The only exception is if you are nice and help someone out that really needs it. Usually a noob or a guildie that is lower level than you. As to be social. You can be social regardless if you are grouped in a game or not. Most big mmorpg guilds use Ventrilo or teamspeak. So the social aspect is really up to the player! Grouping is not required for this. Do not get it confused!

I group because 9 out of 10 times, group content is more fun and more challenging. www.agonysend.org |

Here is my view as to why I group Random groups: only to have fun, I don't random group for any kind of loot, within a random group I am the one who will "pass", often more of a helper within a random group Guild/Friends related I group obvious to have fun but we will have a objective, we will gather loot and share this loot or we might have a objective where one of our guildy's/friends needs a certain item we make sure he will get that item with our help. I agree that I don't group to be social, obvious it "can" help but like you say there are allot of things to be social and you don't need groups for that in a MMORPG. ------------------------------------------------------------ |

i don't like to group cause 1. i don't want to waste half my day getting a group together 2. i don't want to rely on someone else to advance 3. i have more fun going solo |

I can't really answer the poll. I group because it's fun, if it's a challenge. If I can solo for the same thing, then grouping is not a challenge, which makes it pointless and not very fun. |

Group "CONTENT" may be fun and more challenging. However, for me, the groups themselves are nightmares and take away all enjoyment from any content I could ever have. People suck, I find that more and more in each game I play. Sure I want challenging group play. Just get rid of the people's selfish crybaby personalities and then I'll be happy. Oh, and make it so I can have said group on call whenever I want, cuz you know, forming a group isn't a nightmare these days either....uh oh, i used sarcasm, someone is going to take this the wrong way. |

Because it is more enjoyable, challenging, other than that: Whats the point anymore? Within the next 1 - 2 pages someones gonna cry how your telling them they shouldnt be playing a certain game because they can only play short bursts, and then theyll go on to talk about everything else thats wrong with Aion o.o |

I group because it's fun. It's fun because it's varied. Each time I join a group, something different happens. This time our tank is amazing. The next time our tank sucks. The time after that our healer did a trick on the first pull that I'd never seen before. I enjoy class-based games for the same reason, because each group I'm in has different classes which may interact with each other in slightly different ways and it's fun to figure out which combinations are particularly potent. (class-based meaning each player performs a unique role; they don't explicitly have to be "classes".) |

There's an option missing, but that's not the OP's fault, it's the nature of current MMO's. I prefer grouping when it's required to simply survive. Forming a group to survive the perils of the world, be it other players or tough mob AI yet unseen in MMOs, forges comradary through hardship. These are friendships that last. I do not enjoy grouping when it's a requirement of the game to simply advance my character. Such groups are formed out of greed and do not typically found lasting relationships. MMO's these days pretty much tell you exactly when you should group up to complete an objective. People don't form groups because they're scared of what lies outside the city walls. |

I group because the game mechanics require it, (or at the very least, are more efficeient) which makes the game more interesting and fun for me.
