In a post to his blog entitled, "What PlanetSide Means to Me," SOE President John Smedley gushes about the awesomeness of PlanetSide, though he also acknowledges some of the game's shortcomings. Smedley, as it turns out, is also quite excited over the upcoming PlanetSide sequel, shedding some light on the project, saying:
I'm definitely excited -- how about you? Let us know in the comments! Michael "MikeB" Bitton |

I approve! PlanetSide was simply humongous fun when lots of people were playing. I was an ace Mosquito pilot. I can't wait. |

They've sat on this game for YEARS without doing anything but fockin it up with their additions to it, while never fixing the core game issues that developed when 90% of the playerbase left for greener pastures or when they got fed up with the bug ridden combat. Now, all of a sudden, there's going to be a PS:Next? Sounds like someone is looking at the budget and asking themselves, "What can we do to get some cash flow back...?" and picked PS to re-birth. I hope my cynical hatred for all that SOE touches is wrong, because I loved the shit out of Planetside when I played. I was the best damned Galaxy pilot. I could put troops where you wanted, when you wanted, and all while flying 100' off the deck. I still use PS to describe a key facet to a killer MMO. Now... on the other side of the Hate Coin; if they come out with an engine that looks as good as Armed Combat and CoD4, plays as smooth as either of those games, has solid gameplay mechanics, and allows for multiple planets that we can fly to and fight over... well... I dunno...

Big promises of awesome this and that all followed by more of his typical "in hindsight we didn't know what we were doing".
Actions speak louder than words and so far his actions do not come anywhere close to his words.
P.S. Hey Smed, WW2Online was doing all those massive first person shooter aspects long before you. Even the things you claim you want to do. |

I know BF2 or BF2142 was supposed to move past the 64player thing but that never panned out. If they can get truly massive battles going that would be great. I only played PS for a short time but it was enjoyable...a sequel with mass battles would probably draw me in. Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity. |

Sounds like, to me, that SOE is starting to dwindle in the mmo market. They have several failures under their belts with HUGE loss of playerbase. Many of those players are STILL bitter and have vowed to never touch an SOE game. Maybe they are looking at this as a chance to get a "new generation" of players involved. Like, for example, Blizz-ivision; dumbing down a game to go after the younger console gaming crowd. BTW: I tried Vanguard. It had the same rubberbanding problems and combat lag SWG did. I'd almost bet they had some copy of game code in there somewhere. But I digress.
Smed the Smart was this excited about the (N)o (G)ame (E)njoyment as well. I think I'll sit back and see if this is yet another Smedly failure before I consider venturing back to (S)ame (O)ld (E)xcrement. Side note: Bitter? A bit. I had houses and friends galore until a minute after midnight on a Tuesday morning. Then I went to WoW. Now THEY are making huge game changes. I need a new home...

Yea I'll wait and see. Planetside originally was a ton of fun, just not sure what smed and gang will do to mess up the sequel. Piivot take a look at Fallen Earth and Darkfall both seem to capture the swg pre cu feel. |

You got that right. This ass-hat is not to be taken at his word. he has shown himself to be a liar and corporate tool time and again. His often stated opinion that he knows better what we want from a video game than we do ourselves is a perfect example of everything that is wrong with the MMO industry today. If this game is any good, it will be in spite of, not because of his involvement. |

I agree FE is fun. I started in the early closed beta, but the engine....the engine is just....ugh... it makes it unplayable at times. If you can get past that, you may find a fun game with a strong community and a great crafting system. End game is questionable for content and goal. I'm not sure an all PVP end-game like DAoC is viable at this point |

I really liked the first PlanetSide. I bet if they make a new one it will have a cash shop and ruin the whole thing. Everything SOE makes now is cash shop driven. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP3rKRh0h5k |

I'll definitely go in blindly if they keep this game legit. I hate SOE as much as the next guy but Planetside was one of the best MMO experiences I've ever had. I didn't have to worry about crafting, grinding for gear. I just jumped in and went into the on-going never ending massive war. I absolutely loved it. It was an FPS with a persistent world. If they add a lot of rpg things like crafting, grinding, time sinks, I most definitely will not play it. If they add in item malls for guns I most definitely will not play it. |

Does anyone else cringe a little when they hear Smed say they'll take "the essence of everything that was fun" and "make it better"? |

I cannot believe that Smed has said what he did. Anyone got any quotes of his from when he was KILLING PS so that we dump sheeple PS players would automatically just go love his super-spy game, The Agency? He does not love Planetside. He couldn't. Even if he went and got himself a Planetside account for this flip-flop, it hasn't BEEN Planetside since his SWG and Everquest II developers got their broken-content-dumping, event-driven, theme-parky hands on it. |

I loved the concept of Planetside, but not the way the game ended up. I especially did not like the way SOE seemed to completely ignore it for years. In my opinion, that is no way to keep a gaming community interested... I would also have much higher hopes about the new planetside if SOE was not making it. |
