You guys know I love Eve but I just wanted to leave a little message for players just starting.

Before I do, my opinion on this topic has nothing to do with any type of incident in game. I'm not a player that got scammed or owned in game and come here to cry. Just wanted to give my opinion on being a good guy and how tough it could be for a new player to stay that way.

I am a pirate with that out of the way. I've had an incredibly easy time in Eve since I am a scumbag by nature and will sell my own mother for a nickle (in game anyway). For me it's easy to destroy someones time in Eve, the entire game caters to someone like me.

Now recently I decided to log into my mission/explorer alt and I've been doing a study on carebear life and how hard it is for those guys to even exist in Eve.

From dealing with baiters, ninja salvagers, spys, suicides and War decs I see the amount of stress those guys are under. Honestly I don;t think I would be able to deal with it.

People tell newbs High sec space is safe (or safer) but tell that to the massive amount of single corps or newb alliances that I;ve help destroy by taking out their POS or installing a spy that overtime would overthrow their entire way of Eve life for no reason.

I have watched Carebears turn into the most ruthless motherfuckers in the game because of the stress and shit other asshats do in game.

Eve is the greatest game on the market right now for me, I just wanted to give new players a heads up that this game is very fucking hardcore and if you plan to play the good guy you may after a bit turn to the darkside.

Have a nice day, See you in your pod :)

I think the fact that you can take massive damage to your efforts in the nick of time is good, it keeps the game unreal as it should be. Helps you not get too attached to stuff :)

I do go carebear in EVE now and then, and for me it has nothing to do with being afraid of losing stuff. It's about how much free time you have for playing the game (organized PVP in this game just devours your time). Those times, I routinely do quick suicide runs to lo-sec space on PVE-decked ships, just for thrills. I don't care that I lose some or even a lot of money over it - if I was totally cut off from the danger, the EVE universe would get too stale to just carebear around and have fun doing it.

Hell, I could lose all my ships and ISK and not sweat it, I'm not in it for the achievement. I'm in it for the grand narrative :)

Actually its very easy to be a good guy, you just have to know what you're doing. I'm a perfect example of a "good guy", not that I don't engage in pvp every now and again (wormholes and lo-sec kinda forces that on you) but these engagements are very few and far between. All a player needs to do is to find a quiet spot in any region apart from caldari space, and train themselves up to be able to perform almost everything they have interest in doing; for example I'm and explorer mission runner pvper business man. I can basically take what I get from missions, pvping and exploring, sell it in any region with very little taxation from the broker and for a large profit because I have eyes in every major market in every major region. Being a good guy has never been so profitable I make 2mil steady a week, sometimes quadruple that depending on what cool stuff I find when exploring.

This is not a game.

Dark Helmet: "So, Lone Star, now you see that evil will always triumph because good is dumb."

I think many players in Eve have the misconception that you are either a White Hat or Black Hat. The real power is in the Grey Hat.

Being good in general doesn't mean playing the victim, being reactionary or being non aggressive. To be those 3 things doesn't make you a good person.....it makes you prey. Look its simple to be good in Eve by remembering that Grey is the way.

What is Grey?

It's defending whats yours, its sometimes taking whats not. It's being seen in the eyes of others as a helpful resourceful asset of trust.... but also having the mind to be ruthless, deceitful, deadly, and will stab another pilot in the face (in game) to protect your assets.

Grey is the Way 2010 Campaign.... get out the vote.

I'm with Zeroxin, i don't think it's all that hard to be either a nice guy or a carebear. I've only been playing 5 months or so, so I'm still a n00b but I've only been podded by pirates in lo-sec twice. I knew the risks and it's no big deal. If someone wardecs my little me-and-my alt corp I'll either go to a jump clone across the galaxy or just dissolve the corp for a bit.. New Eden is a hive of scum and villainy but, to be honest, I've encountered many more nice and helpful players than scumbags.

I'm a carebear in EvE.  That said, I thrive quite nicely and survived everything the dark side has thrown at me.  I've been scammed, (3/4B ISk) wardec'd for months, had many a ship blown out from under me (death by recliner is a common cause) dealt with overbearing FC's, traveled 85 hops to get to a fight, busted POS's until I thought my eyes would bleed and had my alliances knocked out of 0.0 3 times.

Yet I keep coming back and succeeding in having fun and carving a place for myself in the EVE universe, which is what it is really all about.

Good post, but look at the flip side:

What everyone in Eve played the "good guy": no pirates, no scammers, no market manipulators, all PvP was prearranged and agreed upon, and territory disputes were settled through diplomacy.

Eve would be a bore. More often than not, the "bay guys" make the game more fun.

I agree the Bad guys do make the game fun, they make the game feel more real.

My post is really just  a heads up to all the new guys. Because being bad is freaking awesome and sometimes when people intend on being good guys they see this and switch to the darkside. I know we have a few guys/gals posting in the thread giving me a carebear isk success story and that's cool but if you ask all of them they all had some crazy shit happen to them and sometimes it can be frustrating for that Good guy.

Sometimes that frustration could make the darkside seem really fucking cool.

Heheh, of course we have all had bad shit happen to us. I one lost a ship full of half a billion worth of wormhole stuff due to suicide gankers (at that point in time they didn't exist to me) all I will say is, it was good day for revenge.

This is not a game.

I still think its more fun to be seen a as a good guys, but in reality being underhanded, sneaky, backstabbing, vicious, to the nth degree.

There is nothing better than the masses singing your praises, when in the back ground your robbing them blind, and grinding others to a pulp.

Have you tried offering sex for money?  Just kidding.

Well, there's something sort of close, you could sell a PLEX for ISK, same result.

Oh, you meant in game.  Well, that's a bit different.

Playing the market, industry, mining, mission running. ratting, exploring  all lead to profits, but require different levels of effort, understanding of game mechanics etc.

Well, as a "care bear", I appreciate this post.

I was considering EVE after reading about Dust, and it seemed very exciting. However, I've played other MMOs that had communities like this and I've made it my goal to avoid them like the plague.

Don't take metalhead seriously...

EVE can be played the way you want, vast majority of the playerbase are carebears anyway.
Still, it is very different from other games, even for carebears. There are no servers that would kept different player concerns in their own realms. That is what makes EVE geat - player interaction.

Don't worry about not being able to enjoy the game, you will just have to make some effort on your own to achieve your goals - ie. the 'issue' with people looting or salvaging your wrecks is easy to resolve -> move away from mission hubs.
The same goes for pretty much every aspect of the game, there is always a room to do things your own way, the way you enjoy it.

I can, in an off sort of way relate to what metalhead has said in his orig post. i have had an on again off again relationship with eve. i started life as a miner and trained all the available skills, started a alt to haul ore to the stations and was doing really good minding my own bussiness. right after i got my hulk ( a very large investment at that time ) which was the culmination for my entire eve life savings i had 10 bored pirates stealthbomb it to death in .5 sec space, for absolutely no good reason. ( other then fun i guess ) after that loss, i quit eve for 6 months. but as im sure some of you can attest, it slowly drew me back in.

i got back into eve and got the mining thing going again i joined a really fun corp. we used to do all sorts of mining ops and shit with the goal eventually moving into 0.0 sec and carving a little whole out for ourselves, time went by and the corp had put together a about 7Bil to get things really going logisticly... what happend? a few of the officers took the cash and ran, which lead to the corp ultimately being disolved. after talking to them on teamspeak for 6 months prior to that i thought i really knew them, but like it was said, people grin in your face and rip out your spine, i quit shortly after.

but, its drawing me back again. the game does have its sly basterds in it but i guess at the end of the day its all fun and games right? maybe i should give the darkside a try, or as another poster put it, the "Gray Hat"

In every game I play I always try to be the nice guy. But EVE is getting the best of me. Few days ago I spent about an hour in .2 clearing belts of rats. I was doing well then a pirate came along and dropped me. I was fortunate to break even with the bounties and loot I made nothing was really lost. Last night I returned with my Rifter and did very well. No pirates and made about 2 mil in bounties.

I'm only about three weeks in but without a doubt in a month or two I'm going to blow a head gasket and go postal. I agree, its a very tough game to be the good guy. Space is a dark, ruthless place. That's something everyone has to learn.

i usually play a good guy in games but about 2 or so weeks after starting eve i became a pirate. Being a pirate (low sec, -10, flashy.... what a real pirate should be) was some of the most fun i've ever had in an mmorpg. Although now i'm bored of it and ratted my sec status up..... I still hang around my old pirate friends as i wait to be interviewed for another corp ... but its so hard not to go out and hunt people since for me its so extremely easy. I've had to rat my sec status up about 3 or so times in the past month.

Playing: EVE Online
Favorite MMOs: WoW, SWG Pre-cu, Lineage 2, UO, EQ, EVE online
Looking forward to: Archeage, Kingdom Under Fire 2

The whole allure of eve fro me is being a good guy in a universe of bad guys.

We live in NPC 0.0 primarily and are NRDS.  I just wouldn't enjoy the game if I weren't true to my RL values in game.

I even tried to pirate 4-5 years ago when I started but the first time I targeted a neut I felt like a real shitbag.  It was a T1 hauler in syndicate with nice loot in it.. would've doubled my net worth at the time, but it just felt like stealing and random violence.

It is satisfying to be successful in game without resorting to underhanded tactics.  There have been times I've been annoyed enough to hunt people down and kill them, but I can count those on one hand in the five years I've been playing.  For me PvP in many ways represents a failure of diplomacy.

Those of you who will post that I'm a carebear or playing eve wrong:  kiss my ass, I've probably been playing longer than you have, I don't run from fights, and what I do in the game is just as valid as what you do.

Almost everyone starts as a good guy in eve :) but the dark side is strong ...

But the thing is eve doesn't have 2x colors , you can also be grey :) like make rich ones life a hard one and at the same time help noobs , not only with isk , but with a word of advise wich imo is vital for new ones.

Been a pirate haunting jan for a year :) Decided to try FW now ... guess it's back to the good side

Life is a game - Play it!...

Sorry You feel like this. It wasn't my intention to sway anyone from Eve just more of a heads up that the bad side is appealing and the good could get frustrating sometimes.

All in all I feel the community is a good one. Don't totally judge the game off my post play the trial at least.
