No advantages, lots of disadvantages to running Win7 today. If DX11 takes off and offers something DX9 doesn't without needing top of the food chain gear... then we can talk. Be at least 2011 before MMOs and Win7 see each other. If you had an i7 system and low quality of life expectations Win7 may be worthwhile today. Personally I'm evalutating it at home for our corporate requirements and no I wouldn't be running it otherwise. |

If you plan to do anything...and I mean *anything* with this system aside from gaming, go for Win7. If you want a glorified Wintendo...get an xbox. Championing the usage of a nearly-decade old OS is laughable. |

Windows 7, but give it a while until the driver support is established. |

You can use Vista drivers for Win7 so pretty much set in that regard. |

Windows 7 all the way. Finally nice to see an operating system on par with Apples new one. If only Microsoft didn't screw up vista..... |

I'm getting ready to get 7. Nvidia just released a free 3D driver and all you need is a pair of ordinary red/blue glasses to get the 3D effect. |

If you had a poll, it'd be 99% "Get Windows 7" right about now. Win7 is awesome.

Support for some of the older peripherals has gone. No way to get an old scanner I had working...but then that never worked under Vista either. Apart from that and a network driver issue that neither MS or Realtek seem able to sort out, I've had no problems. Setting up was easier than any earlier version of Windows and everything, apart from the old scanner and the network card whch has to be reset every time I start the machine, has worked perfectly from day one. Takes a bit of getting used to after XP but those people saying you should wait for at least a year before getting it so the problems can be ironed out are conveniently forgetting that it has already been out in the wild being tested by thousands of people for *ages*. I don't regret changing to Windows 7. |

Personally I am running Vista 64-bit, I am really happy with my current set-up. I probably won't switch to 7 until I am at a disadvantage using Vista, I have 6 GB memory so I have some to spare even tho Vista is a hog. For you, I think that it is safe for you to upgrade to 7. XP is getting to the point to be out-dated. Like stated before in this thread pending on what your system, still think you should upgrade. Hope this helps. |

That is why switching to w7 is never a good idea unless u need 64-bit processing for some reason or your gettigna new computer and want to buy a cheap os (there are always ways to get OS cheap, edu or firends of friends or other more dishonest ways ). In 3 more years you will want w7 64-bit, but until then im stickign with xp, becuase its free (i own 2 copies w/ unlimited installs) and becuase its faster (and requires less machine). But i do miss not checking that dx10 box :) "Society in every state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one ..." - Thomas Paine |

I have a dualboot of xp and win7, and none of my games run faster on my machine with XP than win7. Win7 actually runs AOC, WoW, WAR and DA:O faster. |

Playing Dafkfall: I just changed windows 7 (64) to my computer. Had xp 32 earlier. Everything else is same: nvidia 8800 512, intel dual core E6850 3.0 but now i have 6 gigs memory instead 2 i had with xp My ping went from 30s to 50s and my fps dropped from 160 to 110 So tripled the memory and still windows 7 is over 30% heavier than xp...

Originally posted by dfan Jesus, stop making such crappy assumptions when you obviously don't understand anything about it. well... i do have my ping and fps visible in my gui. And I've been looking at those for several months now. And when I changed W7 to my Computer: "My ping went from 30s to 50s and my fps dropped from 160 to 110". Now thats a fact. I said while playing Darkfall with my computer, Windows 7 is over 30% heavier than XP, based on my ping and FPS value.
Is that crappy because you dont like the results? Or what is it?

you have to bear in mind too that no companies have decent 7 graphics drivers. none. and if you think nvidia will have them working properly anytime soon, dont hold out.
ATIs mobility drivers are fairly stable but still in beta and have a lot of crap left in them. give it 6months and we can actually begin to make benchmark comparisons about xp to 7.
what I will say is it actually looks very nice. similar to vistard yet somehow, a whole lot more pleasing. the improved taskbar previews are snazzy for one. installation took a whoppingly small 25mins from inserting the disc - that shits crazy! |

I'm not sure if I can add much more to the thread than what has been said but I have been running Windows 7 for a couple months and I have to say it's the best operating system I have used by far. It runs all the games/software I have installed and gives excellent performance overall; however, I am running with a quad core processor with 4 gigs of DDR3 and an HD4870. I'd recommend anyone with the money to get Windows 7. It j provides better window management, provides excellent search features missed out by XP, gives DX10 and 11 support, and it actually works. If however any program only works on XP you have the XP mode option to use to fix the problem.

To put it frank, anyone telling you to stick with windows xp is an idiot, unless you're machine can't handle win 7. Done. |
