Maybe that was all taken into the original calculations: Human advancement, over population, war, disease?

I think it's a sense of self importance, or hubris if you will.

This reminds me of a KOTOR ! quote...

Yeah...awesome. Anyways, just my two pence, I don't think the Mayans predicted anything special happening, though it might have held some spiritual meaning to them. Regardless, anything significant, be it a hurricane/political/cat-in-a-tree event that happens in 2012 will likely be attributed to the Mayans as a prophecy. Who are we to judge what is coincidence and what isn't? People will find meanings in events for the sake of having them. It's a silly habit, one I don't doubt of which we all are guilty, but on such a massive scale, it becomes a bit silly. 

Also, to the apolcalyptians, why the heck would you want to predict that?! It's not like you're gonna live afterwards and say "I told you so." Well, you can try to survive, I guess, and eat cake with GlaDos.

Watching "The Universe" series, according to them our sun is already about half way into its life cycle. So in about 2billion years time it will expand and the heat will destroy everything on earth.

And finally at the end of its life, it will grow and consume the earth and explode. So max time of earth is 5.5billion more years to go. If humans doesn't colonize other planets by than, we're doom.

That said i just think the mayans simply run out of patient to build the calender, or they are being wipeout by than. But interestingly not only the mayans predict about 2012, but also a few others, like merlin...

But not according to the bible, still left a few prophecies to fulfill before it happens...
