LOL I love the lack of naming policy. Some guy ran by me named Blowjob. I LOL'd. However I am not a smug RPG player who would be insulted by the vulgarity of the world. "Pffaw. To think that I would have to share my gameworld with these lowlifes, naming their Champions in such a rude manner" |

It has nothing to do with being a game, RP or RPG player. If someone was walking down the street with a T-shirt that reads "Blowjob", whether he wants to or not, that person will need to accept the consequence for wearing that shirt. A few people would find that humorous. The majority of people would think the guy is an idiot. Like it was said before, humor is subjective. Most people don't find lowbrow comedy funny. A lot do, but most don't. |

NCSoft does employ a naming policy because I remember them doing this in Lineage. On my server there was a guy named "Eldildorado" and he was the first victim. He leveled to 63 before they changed his name to NameChange01 and gave him the option of choosing his top three names and sending them in. Eventually his name was changed. Point is, he leveled to 63 before any of this happened and this was in end of Chronicle 1 / beginning of Chronicle 2. NCSoft will change these names at a later date, they just have a lot on their plate at the moment with higher priorities. |

This is the truth, eventually they will make it their priority and all these people will have to change names. I used the name pendejo in WOW for a very long time, and got to max level before they forced me to change it to something else. pendejo is a spanish curse word so it wasn't as obvious as using english curse words. |

Thanks for that info. I had been strongly thinking of buying this but no naming policy definitely is a nix. Just like no /ignore command was a killer for Lineage2. |

I agree, stupid names deserved to be punished. I will go out of my way to camp anyone from the other side who has a bad name and any group I'm leading or have influence in who we take along will not be adding folks with names like "meatballsub" Yes, I am a name-nazi.

Whats wierd is the word filter does not tie into the name creation. I pmed a guy who had a name I couldn't recognize and his name came out censored but yet he was able to create the name and the name is displayed. Although all he did was give me a rude "fu" and tried to KS me 10 times... but this doesn't speak for the behaviour of the general public. I've seen some very nice people and I can chalk up the ksing due to overcrowded zones. Cleric's are not hesitant to giving buffs to any nearby players. |

It's not a "sissy" filter, it's a "retarded moron" filter. And before anyone gets on their chair yammering about their freedom of speech and expression, offensive and hateful speech is not protected. Not that you have any freedom of speech whatsoever in an MMO. They can make whatever rules they want and you agree every time you click the EULA. Offensive names like Bigblack Cock are just bad for business, they don't need parents complaining to them and the bad publicity that comes with it. You can bet NCsoft will start cracking down when they have time. |

Agree with you completely. Not only would my group disallow them completely, we could target them. They ruin the environment for those who want to emerse themselves. Be that with PVP, RP, whatever. “Never violate a woman, nor harm a child. Do not lie, cheat or steal. These things are for lesser men. Protect the weak against the evil strong. I have to agree with this. So far I have seen such names as: fannyflaps, penischeese, fuuukyou, bummycat to name just a few on my server. It's ridiculous. It just encourages the wowtards to run riot, and they are. Behaviour on chat channels is deplorable with some people just logging in seemingly to shout profanities im general chat. Oh, and there are no GMs about either, so nothing is done about it. |

If a simple name is all it takes to break your experience, then the fault lies elsewhere. |

Being rude or offensive does spoil my gameplay. Society has some rules of behaviour, for a reason, so we all get along. I don't have problems showing a little consideration. |

So it was the day of the head start, I'm running around and I happen to see this long brown haired man with a beard who had the name JesusChrist. Haha. Yes, he was a priest. He was actually fighting with a guy named JohnLennon. lol. I was showing my friend this game yesterday, as he's never seen it before, and I was showing him the channel switching as I explained the whole "JesusChrist" guy I switched channels to just see JesusChrist sitting on the ground, now a level 14 Cleric with a mace and shield haha. |

Originally posted by Kuji-Kiri I would be fine with it being only a name (since I turn them off anyway), however, the types of names that are being talked about here translate directly to the person's level of maturity. Very rarely will names such as Muffdiver or Kocknoker bring about anyone with a mental capacity greater than their shoe size. It's a Jeep thing. . .

I think offensive names should never be allowed, rampant misogyny is certainly the worst problem and i'm certainly against anything that would make the playing environment uncomfortable for women. Racism is another problem, many people get away with it using other languages in english speaking games. Homophobic and xenophobic names also tend to appear every once in a while, usually disguised in slang. I think regardless of a company's policy these names should always be reported, i don't believe in PC, but there really is a line. As for silly names, you really must have a very low tolerance level to be upset by those. Aside from large and proud traditions like those which led to Comedia dell' Arte, there were plenty of silly nicknames in medieval times. And even use of numbers was very common, as it wasn't not only customary for a firstborn son to bear an identical name to his father in many regions, but it also was a very extended practice for people in small villages to share both surnames and given names. You'd be hard pressed to find titles not bearing a number even amongst today's nobility, and many common names in some languages (Sesto, Segundo) actually derive from the practice of some people giving their children numbers for names. Yes, i know high fantasy is derived from Neoromantic literature but the genre has evolved. Orcs are no longer the soulless creatures they once were, so really people need to adjust their sensitivities and realize that many "silly" names have as long a tradition amongst mankind as do those based on legendary creatures or the circumlocutions so popular in germanic languages. Just think of people with silly names as crude villagers and you should have no problems. As for names that are meant as taunts (ihazlazerz on an rp server for instance) just try thinking of those as being in the same vein as silly sounding medieval names like Tartarin or Wamba and treat them as buffoons. The added challenge might actually help in immersion and improve your rp experience. Just to make things clear... |
