I think characters and animation in Aion are better than LOTRO;but LOTRO has a much better and deeper world. But games are beginning to nip at LOTRO's heels and hopefully they will do something to upgrade their graphics-it's a long way to Mordor. |

i thought aion looked good and lotro looked good as well but the main thing i noticed was plants and trees and stuff tend to move in lotro whereas in aion that didnt seem to happen it actually seemed like static stuff was cardboard like almost to the point of stopping you from walking through even a tuft of grass |

Haha, your not comparing Aion characters to LOTRO characters are you? Aion wins hands down...I've played them both with max settings. IMO lotro has some of the worst character models I've seen in an MMO as well as some of the worst pvp. The world is nice but it doesnt make up for the horrible toons and a world which is too safe to call Middle Earth. The characters in Aion are definitely better than LotRO. However, the world and overall look of everything in Lotro is MUCH MUCH better.
Take a look at the sky in Aion. Do you like that .jpeg? The same .jpeg used in every zone? Yeah, didn't think so. Take a close look at some of the terrain, they went all half-assed in the texturing department. The game may trick you into thinking it looks better, but take a close look at things, you will see the difference. -Computer specs no one cares about: check. -MMOs played no one cares about: check. -Xfire stats no one cares about: check. -Signature no one cares about: check. ------------------------------------------------------------ |

Having read through this thread, there seems to be almost a consensus on Aion having better characters and buildings, whereas LotRo wins when it comes to landscape and the world in general. I have played both on a pretty low tech notebook, so I have to play them both with low stats. And to me LotRo wins but in one aspect; it plays far smoother , is much more fun to play and runs a more profound and interesting storyline. But where are all the players in LotRo? The community is much larger still in Aion, which give the feeling of a true MMO although a rather shallow one. |

It's not like some of the terrain is half-assed because they slacked, it's to improve game performance whilst still having great graphics. Game runs smoother than WoW on PCs that are years old. Who cares if not every single patch of green grass looks perfect, overall graphics/performance optimization is very good and that's whats important in their eyes and in the eyes of people with below par specs. |

I'll throw a wrench in here, any of you check out the graphics in Fallen Earth? If you haven't been in the game for a few weeks, you would have missed the latest graphics patch. Even on low settings, the grass is literally blades of grass. I had read they were doing an upgrade but laughed it off as I usually play with settings on medium or low to avoid lag, I rarely really see the nice landscapes. However, there I was, riding on my motorcycle and all of a sudden it was like "holy crap, the grass, I see each blade of grass, not a clump!" Honestly, I do like a game with nice graphics. I tried playing original EQ again just a couple of weeks ago and after just a day or two in game, I had to cancel my subscription. There was just no way I could play a game and look at the screen with graphics that old. I must be getting really old, because my eyes just can't take EQ graphics! =) Aion has some great character details and the world itself is fine, but nothing spetacular. LotRO has terrible character models, including Fred Flinstone feet! However, I always found the landscape to be really well done. AoC character models were top notch and I could spend hours making a character, same for Aion's character creation. AoC's landscape was pretty good too, but really I spent more time concentrating on game play rather than my surroundings. Also, the beginner area of Tortage was remarkable whereas the rest of the game lacked. WAR, well, very simple and basic character design, along the lines of EQ, WoW and LotRO... you have some faces to pick from and colors to choose, but that's about it. Their landscape wasn't much better than WoW, but that was intentional in my opinion to help with gameplay. The real issue for players is that we all have a personal preference. You want an awesome looking character, great. You want an awesome looking world, great. For others though, it's about game play and unless the graphics are really bad, it wont matter much as long as the game itself is fun to play. |

Bah. This thread is not even supposed to created. What is a good looking game is what the beholder says, not something that is universial. For example I believe Wonderking and other 2d games is far better looking games than both aion and lotro becuse its graphic is not a mixture of bad textures and awsome ones. Its no wonder that other forums lol at mmorpg.com |

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this. |

What does it matter? Absolutely nothing. If the gameplay is shallow (like LotRO's is now that Turbine destroyed their original concept) than gameplay > graphics
I agree... vanguard environmentals still gobsmack me today. Having played both, I would say LotR wins on environments generally, while Aion wins on models for me. I prefer Aion's art direction more all round. Honestly, some of the Aion landscape textures I saw reminded me of EQ... seriously. |
