Sorry for the provocative title, but because I have seen too many Aion graphics is top or flop debates I wanted to see it solved once and for all. This is nothing about the gameplay, merely the graphics. Comparing it to an average, similar LOTRO vista shows says IMO all, like one pic says more than 1000 words. The textures, the detail, in everything Aion just IS some years behind. Both parts of the picture at made at max settings of the games with DX9.

while i agree that LOTRO looks amazing, i don't think those pics do either game justice. one could easily point out, that the pic from Aion, could be in the lone lands of LOTRO, which is just as bland and barren. some of the areas i've been in Aion, truly rival LOTRO |

Well i play both (lifetime LOTRO) and yes LOTRO runs DX10 which is huge over DX 9 . Once more MMO's go with DX 10 or even DX 11 now there are cards that can run it. Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =( |

You have my word, it is both max and DX9. One is Breeland, a really average place from the day 1. I could have easily taken much more breathtaking sceneries from Evendim or Lothlorien or what, but I just wanted to highlight the textures and trees and grass in a really totally average place. Just one look at rock textures or trees! EDIT: the Aion textures oddly remind of the stylized realims of the SWTOR landscapes btw. |

What is weird is that both those pics are subpar from how both games look on my comp. I do not even run at max settings and both those pics are far worse than they look on my comp.
I think LOTRO is one of the best looking games around, and Aion is right up there with it. |

It runs on the far cry 1 engine i think, not to sure but i thought it said on the main menu for Aion. Aions graphics are good but are not top notch, that would be age of conan :). Character Detail is very good but the terrain textures are pretty bad. Besides the game was originally released in 2008, not to sure if the graphics was changed tho. |

Op, I would agree that the world of LOTRO is more detailed than Aion. But there is a reason for that. Aion is made to be run on many types of computers. There are many PC Bhangs that, though they have great internet, don't have great computers. So the devs made the game so that it would be usable by a wide variety of players.
I have heard rumor of them possibly releasing a high definition client but I have no idea if they will. |

Sigh...gameplay over graphics people, its all that ever really matters..... leave the art comparisons for paintings in museums.

True, but its nice to have decent graphics. Its nice to look at something that looks awesome, than something that hurts your eyes its so bad. (not directed at aion) Graphics is one of the things that draws me in, gameplay is the thing that keeps me there. |

That is a lie and you know that. Sure you can make some better places in Aion, but for every screen you make of Aion landscape I show you a LOTRO screen 10 times better. I compared average areas. I did on purpose chose a simple place outside of Bree and not elaborate Evendim or Lothlorien screenshot. Or just do this: install both, set both to max and then Alt-Tab out of LOTRO and compare it to Alt-Tab Aion. Why does take Aion 10 times as long to alt-Tab out when the textures are THIS? Yes you CAN find better Aion vistas, but for every one you find I find you LOTRO vistas many times better as well. In every comparision, LOTRO WILL win, and if you really played both you KNOW this is the truth. So who of us IS the troll? |

Just a few things that I notice. - Your comparing two games that have two completely different art styles. - You compare only a small portion of two terrains, as if that is all the graphics there are in the games. How about character, weapons, and armor graphics? - Animations are part of graphics, as they are part of the visual setting. How are the two comparative animation wise? - Even if ones graphics could logically be considered better than the other, neither one can honestly be called "bad" graphics in relation to the MMO genre. |

You could have at least not sharpened the first picture in photoshop. It's so grainy and obvious. Even the dark colours are extremely grainy which they shouldn't be. |
