Not for the PKing or anything like that, I'm not THAT sort of player, but for the sense of there being a WORLD, in which PvPers and the like are necessary to make it very realistic.

Anyone else?

Astronomy, art, games, and a cup of coffee.

I think it's easy for a lot of ex-UO players to say that they miss UO.

It has changed a bit, but basically it is still the same UO.  There are still many different adventures to be had and a ton of new content for most old players to try out.

The game is still running. You can always pop in for a month and check it back out. There is also a new expansion that just came out earlier this month that brought in a new race, spell casting class, new type of ranged combat and also (from what they say) the largest dungeon put in so far.

"Easy" only equals "better" for crack addicts and MMORPG developers.

Not even close to the same UO. The entire game now is about the UBER LOOT. That is not what UO was about for us ex-UO players. It's about boosting those skill stats a bit more by getting another weapon that will add +5, +10, or whatever to add to that swords, or magic skill.

The UO I used to play, Pre AoS was about the community. Everybody relied on other people for something to keep things chugging along. Players relied on crafters to keep making the best GM gear. Crafters relied on miners, and other resource collectors to keep them supplied with raw materials. Casters relied on that constant supply of regs needed for spells.

You had to rely on not only your skill, but your ability to use those skills. And when in combat...it was always about the knowledge of those skills that kept you going....not your +10 stat sword! PvP,  it didn't matter that you didn't have some kinda power sword as much as it mattered on how your characters stats and skills were. Magic resistance was a skill, not something picked up in the armor. And PvE loot was random...not based on the fact you had lucky armor!

Housing was much nicer. Sure there was only a limited amount of house styles, but they were still nicer than most of the crap you see people trying to build in todays game. Those houses were more realistic, and fit the game. Better than many of these multi coloured, styled houses you see in the game now.

And rares were actually rares. Not something aquired only in a dungeon crawl. Rares were old items that were no longer available to be bought or taken in game.

Bods weren't a bad thing at first. But then it became just another grind to get that next decent bod. So you could get that next decent reward like some 'rare' cloth or a runic hammer or sewing thingy.

Graphically it is the same UO perhaps. But in most every gameplay aspect, it is not the UO that many of us played before the Age of Shit started.

If you're going to stick it out there, don't be afraid if you get it cut off.

Yes I miss it a lot.  Unlike the previous posts, I feel UO has changed dramatically since release.  I'm not a fan of the game anymore.  It is pretty dated now though to be fair.  I do miss the sense of risk versus reward and the amazing economy that it had early on.  If you haven't played it recently you should give the free trial a go, although you'll likely come to the same conclusion I did.

I miss it too. I played for a couple years or so back in the day. I had UOAssist and UOAM and all the toys. My friends and I looked forward to loggin in.

I completely agree with the comment above about the "economy". That made the game for me. I liked being a bit scared taking the pack animal full of ore back to the house to smelt (or whatever we were working on that day). I liked having a favorite shop and all that stuff. I have some free time lately and decided to see if it was still running, it is, of course. I was excited to get the trial account to see if it was as much fun as I remember.

I was almost depressed when I logged in. I walked around for about 2 hours on Great Lakes shard and saw 2 people outside of New Haven. But there was an ugly, out of place empty house everywhere one could be placed. The caves were empty, it was like an abandoned world.

I will probably just let the trial expire and move on. Only those of us that played in the beginning will understand why.
