Is it a good or bad sign that aiononline.com is down?

Uh, they are readying everything for their launch in 3 hrs. I can imagine they are doing last minute system reboots and backups.

Normal, getting ready for the launch. Here is the tweet warning about it before it went out twitter.com/aion_ayase

"normal" huh?  How does that conversation go?

dev - hey boss, when should we do the website maintenance?

manager - oh i don't know... how about a couple of hours before launch when there should be tons of traffic.  That should send warm fuzzies out to everyone.

dev - consider it done!

It's a good thing.

The updates consist of last minute tweaks and patches, but are mostly a system refresh to make sure the game is clean and ready for launch. This is to minimize conflicts for when the servers are going to get hammered.

I seriously doubt the game servers have any interaction with the servers that run the website.

They don't, not directly at least. However it is common practice amongst development companies to do a refresh and system check before releasing a game like this. The website included. They don't always do the website at the same time, though, that's really just preference.

You never know.  Sometimes in EVE forums and servers can be down at same time, I think because they share the same subscriber databases.

That's part of it. It really depends on why they are down in the first place. Sometimes it's something integrated into both that needs to be brought down. Sometimes there are separate adjustments that needed to be made to both, but since their IT is there, they bring them both down to get it dealt with quickly. You get the idea.

You can defend it all you want, but there is no way, absolutely NO WAY, that bringing down their main public facing site for what is now more than an hour immediately prior to launch was part of their original plan.  I guarantee it is an indication of either problems or piss poor planning.  I hope that whatever motivated this is isolated to the website and does not encompass some shared database with the actual game servers as you imply.  Because if something goes wrong while they are doing whatever they are doing, this really isn't the best time to be trouble shooting problems.  If this is "normal" as the apologists seem to think, it should have been done in the middle of the night last night or any time last week.

of course, it's back up now and actually looks like a professional website all of a sudden instead of a blog.  So I take it all back.

I think they are changing over from the beta forums and content to the live.  It isn't unusual though one would think it could have been done ahead of time and activated with some quick configuration changes.

I think your tinfoil hat is wound too tight on your pointy little head.

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

I've got one of those new no-wind ones.  There's no reason you can't keep the alien mind probes out AND be comfortable.

Yeah it's nice when the website updates.

Some games are out for months before their websites change
