Well, today I decided to make a new character to try out the travel skills. I tried out swinging, and was really digging it. I got the genius idea to tailor my guy into looking like a cheap chinese bootleg version of Spider Man just for a cheap quick laugh before deleting the character. As I was standing around some guy saw me and took a huge issue with me. Started frothing and yelling how much I am killing the community with my zero originality. I tried to explain to him that this was for a cheap thrill, and that my main character is a well crafted (I think so) original character, but he would have none of it. He took the issue into a whole different level that I'd much rather avoid (which I did, by ignoring him). This got me thinking, do you think people who want to play as Greem Lantern, Wolverine, Samus Aran etc. are killing this game? I mean, this is a game that has an evil Doctor Fate as the main antagonist. Originality isn't it's strongest points. And I also understand that there are people who want to play their own hero, and there are people who want to be their favorite hero. I have no problem with this. I don't see how people having fun in their own little way can be killing anything. One last comment; most of the so called originals usually extend to different robot/mech variations or ninjas. I've seen far more robots and ninjas than both original and copycat cape crusaders combined. |

The guy is an idot. Make any character you want. I don't think people making a character to look like an existing hero is bad. PLaying: EvE, Ryzom Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum |

Putting the fool on ignore was the proper response. If you wish to roleplay Spiderman have at it, that's the whole fun of playing these games sometimes isn't it?

and here I thought that my hero concept; 'The Human Garbage Disposal' was unique.... only to find that people copying it was killing the game. |

The reason that copying heroes is forbidden is for copyright infringment, besides that I dont think there should be any issue. Nowadays, many people tend to feel some sense of superiority to mandate how others play the game. Imho, just try to avoid blatant copies copyright heroes, and make the character you like. |

Have fun, make whatever looking character you want. I ran into a batman a few days ago that was spot on. I was stunned. I mean he nailed the character perfectly. I complimented him! Do keep in mind though that you better not plan on keeping the look. If a Cryptic CSR sees you, you will be forced to change your costume because it's against their Costume Guidelines for copyright infringement.

I think it's great. I see no issue with it, because, if anything else, it's simply you challenging yourself with the character generator, which is a game in and of itself. Personally, I don't make copycats, I prefer to just see what I can make personally... I take that back, I tried doing a Gambit copycat but that was a horrible, horrible crash and burn. ____________________________ "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but I know World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein |

you wont get in trouble for costume copy, trying to name your character spiderman will get you renamed, but only because stan lee trademarks are prosecuted to the fullest extent of trademark law, apparently the old bastard has nothing better to do in his senility years lol |

I may be in the unpopular minority here, but I will say I don't enjoy copycats either.
When I See someone who has made exactly ironman it yanks me out of the immersion of the game. There are so many options, I can definitely understand human need to replicate what you see as an 'homage' but I also think its a bit of a cop-out. A few slight variations would have made them unique and different and I wouldn't have even noticed them as "Tony Stark" in their exact iron man replica outfit anachronistically emote breakdancing in ren ctr. However, In the grand scheme of things it is not 'killing the game' any more than it was in WoW that someone made some variation on Seph1roth or Leg0las. When people name their character some admixture of their race/class like "HumanPally" or "TaurShammy" it also jerks me out of the immersion, possibly even worse. What parent names their kid "DKnight" knowing he will grow up to be a Death Knight with little to no imagination? I think though its a minor annoyance. What I generally don't like much more so is when someone thinks they are being "clever" by making "Timmy the Retard Boy" or "Uncle Pedobear" type characters. It's those players who seem offensive to me. Especially cloaked under the "It's my game, let me be an attention whoring goof who will shock and annoy you! because its my game" clause of self-entitlement they seem to operate under.
I think the argument "It's your game play how you like" works fine in a single player game, but just like showing up at someones funeral with a "God Hates Your Son" poster like that one Church does, there are just some things that are outside of socially acceptable and qualify a person in the 'jackass' category.
This is when Kanye interupts me, and tells me he will let me finish but that OP had a better post, yo...

Its "Humor" you made a cartoon character? I'll let Dave Chappelle know he was doing it wrong.
All he had to do was make up an annoying copy-cat character in a mmo. That show and all those 'jokes' and stuff was unneccesary.
A Copy cat of Batman called "The Dark Knight" or "Tony Stark" the exact Iron Man isn't hilarious to me. Neither would seeing Fred Flinttstone or Peter Griffin in a super hero game. In fact, I don't play this game for a hilarious comedy. I am sure that is surprising to you, given that your concept of comedy is so different from mine.

Some day Marvel will explain why homage to their characters is a bad thing. In the meantime, make what you want, I say. WoW is the new MUD. |

i havent read all through the entire post, but just the first two, i agree with the guy above ^ Someone was obviously anal, Way i see it, my making a hero that was modeled after a certain marvel or dc super hero, or ne thing else for that matter i do because its my own little way of paying homage to a hero/whatever that i like. i had a fascination of using power armor in this game y.. because of iron man. he rocks. and who doesnt want to make a hulk or wolverine type, they are just badass.

to be honest i think we all make them with the character customisation when bored....
i made a Carmen Sandiego, although no one got the reference.... even my darkwing duck didn't go down well... :'( my anime styled "raven" was liked though... Other than copyright violation, and obvious lack of creativity when there were so many ways you could have made it a little different from plagarizing someone else's character, and a shimmering sea of Tony Stark Iron Man replicas standing around that appear anachronistic, I have no idea what it could be.

Originally posted by Kyleran Pretty much. I think very few players don't want to pay homage to a well-known superhero at least some of the time. Face it, that's the big draw with the character creator in these games. No one is to blame, though I do think copycats degrade the experience to a degree. Not allowing them would be worse, IMO. BTW, has anyone seen The Tick? I love that guy.
