If you don't like Aion you don't really like MMOs anymore. Aion is just the latest MMO that you don't like. There is no magic formula or innovation that can be had in this field. Just like every shooter plays like Doom yet no one can match the intensity of Doom ever again. The innovation will come from another genre altogether. |

I just played the beta for the first time and I think it is well done overall (from an objective point of view, provided that you accept the MMORPG formula). However, there is a catch. It is indeed the typical MMORPG with a similar gameplay you had like 10 years ago and it clearly shows signs of fatigue on me by now. I played 'till level 7 or so tonight and — really — almost all quests were about killing a number of creatures, with like a handful where I had to click on objects. This gave the game an unsettling Asia-Grinder feel. The style of the game also looks like it's designed by my grandma. It has some kind of baroque kitsch feel to it that really makes me feel uneasy, despite the fantastic character creation. So it comes down to, in my opinion: the game is well done from an objective point of view, but you may still subjectively dislike it. |

Yes, it's well done, for what they intended to do, it's well polished, runs well, but it all feels rather soulless to me. Simple as that. Those are my opinions and my reasons why I will not be playing it. Not sure if this thread was meant to be serious, but if so, stupid assumptions and simplistic views ftl. |

Games don't have souls. What you put in is what you are getting back. The game may not motivate you to participate but then say that. Blaming it for something that you don't do seems misplaced. |

Also, what's the definition of 'Having soul' for a game? Even in music you'll have different opinions on it. If it's 'missing something'..fine. But 'No soul'?! That makes no sense, sorry...unless we have a clear definition of you mean by 'soul'.

Just use "je ne sais quas" (a certain something) meaning it's generally lacking something you can't put your finger on.
---- Googled that, good thing..
It is "Je ne sais quoi", and it means "I don't know what" in French. Quoi (Qua) means "what". You say it when you don't know what else to say. As an example, if you are tasting a recipe, and it is missing something, but you are not sure what it is missing, you might say "This is pretty good, but it is missing...je ne sais quoi." |

Don't know why I'm bothering in attempting to rationalize this to someone who is obviously nothing but a pedantic fanboy seeking to rubber-stamp reasons why someone doesn't like his current FOTM game, and nothing I say will satisfy you, but I'll bite; By 'soul', I mean Aion, at no point, strikes me as being a living, breathing world, nor does it seem as though the devs seek to make my character a part of that world. It mostly reminds me of fluff/filler that is designed to funnel me into the Abyss. The whole thing strikes me as being as though NCsoft has a checklist, that they formulated from seeing the successful elements of other MMOs, and just went down that list, checking each off, without putting anything extra into the mix. It all feels very formulaic and generic. Very well done, but still, it's missing that extra spark that makes it something special, instead of just another game. Some games, when you play them, feel like the devs really and truly care about what they've created, and want you to be a part of that. Aion doesn't feel that way. I can't see people reminiscing about Aion 5 years from now. It just feels like a disposable product, to maintain until NCsoft has something else to peddle out. That Hyundai comparison strikes me as being rather accurate. It's just...there. Nothing special, but there, doing its job, nothing to complain about, but nothing really to make you go "Man, I loved that car" 5 years from now. |

Whats with the name calling?
A lot of people are burnt out on the mmo genre but still keep looking for one to fit their niche and give them a fix. |

There IS a magic formula to if you do or don't like Aion. If you sleep with WoW every night but dream about games with bigger features, then you like Aion. |

Originally posted by Eben Good definition, and I Not many games can do that, and especially nowadays that mmos are coming out like fast food trying to out flavor each other. I will wait a few weeks after release and some fixing-misc.-stuff patches to see whether or not I will like it. However I also believe it's the baggage that we bring that either shadows or brightens our enjoyment of it more than what it provides. As I said, with all the new releases, how many will really try to be completely innovative and new, or will they just try to grab a piece of the pie and follow an already beaten path. |

What part of WoW strikes you as a living breathing world ... today? Not a single one. Yet when I first played it I thought it was a real and magical world. I thought my actions made a difference, I thought my journey mattered at all. Today I know better. Thus I think you and many others are looking for a feeling that could only be experienced once in your life. Had you played Aion first then WoW would you really believe that finding Mankrik's wife actually matters? So if the world does not seem living and breathing to you I'll stick with my original assessment - there is no MMO that would feel like so to you today! |
