Good IP, but I bet the combat would be dumbed-down, like is being done with ST Online.

You say "Star Wars" in that same room and they will all know what you are talking about. In fact, I once called one of my students a "scruffy nerf herder" and all the male students started cracking up while the females just stared at me like I had six heads. Star Wars...it's a 'guy thang.'

LOL. I like stories.

Also, I agree with your point. I have heard of Mass Effect, but don't know what it is.

I 've always wanted to see  a HomeWorld MMO with a very large open universe. I don't think the technology will exist to control that many ships in a mmo for the next 10 or maybe 20 years though.

Something like that has been tried with the MMORTS Mankind many years ago (my first venture into MMOs)... With very questionable success though.

A very good show. With a few different schools of magic. Not a bad idea.

One thing for that is VITAL, is that you have to be able to interact with the main characters. There was an Avatar video game, but Toth wasn't in it. So, I passed.

None. IP-based MMORPGs (and IP-based games in general, for that matter) suck. The licenses cost a ton of money, and then the people who supplied that ton of money wind up designing it instead of the designers.

Huh?

World of Warcraft
Star Wars Galaxies
Final Fantasy XI
D&D Online
KOTORO
LOTRO

Keep in mind that WoW's and FF XI's IPs didn't cost anything. That's a pretty big exception. I don't think the others could be considered great successes.

Dungeons & Dragons: Planescape

And the biggest expansion would be adding all of Faerun/Toril (The Forgotten Realms)

If you know about this setting, you know why it would fit so well to an MMORPG.

The main hub, city of Sigil, would have all the portals to all the other planes, but players would still have to find what the portals are and how to activate them, etc.

The factions of Planescape, the Sensates, The Mercykillers, The Bleak Cabal, The Independent League, etc... probably have a quest series to join the one you want for that character, and you wouldn't be able to join another one with the same guy...

You could have your personal house in your own little pocket dimension, or have designated planes for neighborhoods or even players run cities...

Yup. Same deal with Alan Dean Foster's 'Spellsinger' books, or Piers Anthony's Apprentice Adept series (with rhyming magic).

I'm a little surprised no one has tagged Anthony's 'Xanth' world for an MMO. It would certainly be an interesting setting.

Every time I see this topic come up on a forum I immediately think of the same ones each time.

The first is indeed the Xanth series of PA's.  I only read up to #17 about ten years ago and not quite sure why I stopped.  The series is so fun.  The difficult thing to achieve would be giving players their special magical power.  There would need to be so many created.  Still, think it would be a blast.

The other is the Dan Simmons' four novel Hyperion Cantos.

Are you saying that those are all great games that are faithful to their source IP?

Sure they got made, but they absolutely suck for fans of the source material (with the exception of Warcraft, which has never been taken very seriously in terms of lore).  SWG and LotRo in particular have about as much in common with their original IP's as my ass has in common with my elbow.

Well, as the IP's are both named The Lord of the RIngs online  for The Lord of the Rings, and star wars galaxies is also labeled as Star Wars, then the only way to make this statement true would be in the least to name your Elbow  your Ass...  ...  ...

Failed attempts at humor aside, what I said is provably true.  We could put together a list of the ways that LotRo and SWG blatantly fly in the face of the IP's established lore, and that list would be longer than the sum total of this thread.

Although I'd agree to some extent I find this to be vastly exaggerated....... 'all failed attempts at humor aside'.  Its hard to pinpoint a part of a particular story that doesn't fly when the story is just being written in the case of many new games based on an IP.  Sometimes for developers its just getting down the general necessities of the world to put you in a story such as SWG did....  I don't see how they really ruined the "lore" enough to make a game like SWG feel less.. star warsy.  well.... at least before the NGE.  Sure there are things you may not think mesh with the story....  but really... when you get in a game like LOTRO or SWG, you're making it sound like its such a stark difference that its hard to tell they belong to eachother.

Ha. I had the new release of #12 in my hand at the book store, and suddenly thought to myself "Why am I STILL reading these?"

Now, I love puns (and am quite relentless using them on my friends), but I just got burned out, and I think Anthony was too.

I agree that the individual abilities would cause problems - particularly with balance.

MMM. That appeals to me greatly, as long as it kept Humans out of the mix (unlike the movies), or kept them mobs to be slaughtered for various purposes.

Much potential for gory fun there. One of my favourite scenes in movies was when the predator was swinging the alien around by the tail. Damn, that was cool!
