While I agree the OB has been a diaster for Labor Day weekend play, I think the OP is a bit extreme in the letter. I'm sure NcSoft will work out the major bugs(which should have been done already) within a couple of days so we can all play. |

Just not what you said heh 1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical. 2. The open beta had an unfortunate rough start, there is server maintenance currently underway to fix the aforementioned issues. |

I think what got to people here is that you sent the complaint in first, and then you just posted the letter here, without researching the facts at all. NCSoft has messed up a bit in this beta, and you're totally in your rights to complain to them. But we'd like you to complain about things more appropriately. What would have been appropriate is this: //thread// Hi guys, I'm really frustrated with the Open Beta. It isn't running smoothly, and I didn't realize I had to pay for it. Was there a post anywhere on the NCSoft site that said OB was not F2P before it began? >>The answer from the forum would have been yes, there was on on the Aion main page on August 27th, but it was not nearly everywhere it should have been. Is this how OBs normally operate? >>The answer would be that most AAA-list MMORPGs find a way to squeeze money from people during beta these days, underhanded or not. A file, ****** flagged on my antivirus as "*****". Is this malicious? >>The answer would have been no. //end thread// And then you could have taken that information and sent in your complaint letter, and it would have been 100% accurate and a valid complaint. And most of us would have agreed with you. We're not picking on you because you're new or because you don't know the answers already. |

You know I try to reserve my comments, and only post them when they are more or less well thought out. I try to remain somewhat nuetral cause I understand the world doesn't revolve around me. but you want to see why some people are saying you lie, and don't know what your talking about. (Including me) You make this letter complaining about how they didn't have enough documentation about how to get into open beta. and thats cool, I worked retail and retail maintenence, I know that most people do not read posted signs, and I forgive you for that. Then you go on to say that you have played many games, and been in closed and open beta's, thats cool, a claim lots of people make, but then you say you'd been gaming a year a little later, and not too many MMO's came out in the last year, we had a bunch of releases a little over a year ago, but those betas required keys, and did you start gaming cause you signed up for some beta keys, not caring cause your not a gamer, and you got in and this is how your hobby started? then there are F2P mmo's that have come out but thats a different beast, Basically what I'm saying is with a year under your belt, and being a beta tester, how much experience do you have playing finished games? must have alot of free time on your hands, much more than someone with say, a job. Then there is the matter of you saying you won't post here anymore, then don't you know it, you keep talking. |

I think part of the confusion of newer gamers is the confusion between the terms "Open Beta" and "Free Trial." Personally...I won't pay for a game I haven't tried out in a free trial anymore...too many bad experiences. But I guess I'm "old school," because anything with the word "beta" in it, to me, meant you were helping iron out the bugs, and while I never expected to be PAID for doing so....I also never thought I'd see the day you have to PAY (even 5 bucks) to help a company test their game. So...while I don't entirely understand some of the very very EARLY complaints here about AION, I also understand the lack of any desire to PAY to test a game. Myself....I'll wait for a 3 day trial, or whatever they're willing to offer later. If they don't offer any free trial so that I can decide if I'm willing to spend my money on the game, then...well...I won't play it. No big deal. But I really think it's pretty early to be making rash judgments on a game that isn't released. Time to make judgment calls really...is after the game has been OUT for about 6 months....then you have a little bit better idea of how the gameplay is AND....of how good the company is at resolving problems for their customers, etc. President of The Marvelously Meowhead Fan Club |

OP, if you are looking for a p2p game and dont want to pay to try it,then look on the game list. Most of the p2p games there have healthy populations, and Free trials for x days or x levels. Good luck on your quest to find one you like. C |

Oh boy you people are very Defensive. I am not on the offensive...again it was my experience that was a fiasco, as I stated in the letter. And, those were the facts of MY experience. If Aion or NCsoft or whomever wants only to appeal to pro gamers fine, maybe they dont want new markets or more customers I don't know. It could have been made a bit clearer in regards to the required key for those of us that have not done this type of "Open Beta". In addition, if it had been a harmful virus everyone would have been made aware, and better safe than sorry. I know one thing if I was a pro, mighty gamer, I would be helpful to others and remember that everyone is noob at one time or another and that arrogance is not earned or deserved or called for. And the slamming bashing, cussing, name calling response I got here from some is far worse than my letter regarding my experience. Apparently that is more tollerable to the Professional gamers.

I have to agree in a lot of what you are saying rubivi.
It is wrong for them to be selling beta keys, after all it's 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. We supply NCSoft with the lemmings to stress test the game for them, they supply us with a chance to try before we buy. NCoft/Funcom etc: are not interested in what is fair or what is right, they just want your money. It makes me laugh when you see people actually declaring loyalty to these company's who would have your Granny killed if the price was right. :) Downloading the client is painfully slow unless you can find the torrent file which is much faster. Anything that puts rootkits/viruses on your computer is bad and can cause the user many a headache, what your seeing is the dreaded Game Guard. It really needs replacing.
I hope all this rubbish doesn't put you off playing.

Alot of wrong informations here. No where in open beta does it say it have to give out free trial or demos to the public, also it was not a requirement for it to be free. All it had to do was give methods of access to the public, which was the key. Money is tight, but I am sorry, there are people who are starving in the world that does not care about how bad us Americans have it. The screenshot OP used was also one of the best example about being ignorant about computer softwares: #1 Anti-virus and Gameguard have been known to cause conflict, especially if someone does not patch Gameguard. #2 Anti-virus and Gameguard tries to overwrite each other when conflict occurs because anti-virus softwares exclude Gameguard from the detection list. Which AV detect GG as a threat or virus, and GG detects AV as a hack program. In fact neither of them are a threat to the system or the game. #3 GameMon.des was the file that can solve some of the Aion GG error by delete and GG will repatch itself. Which means it might have been related to the error of server patching to 1.5.0.3 Basically that file is important when it comes to making AV and GG not cause conflict, but it is having error, which is why AV detected it as virus when it is really not. #4 Ever heard of Anti-Virus false-positives? This is not even considered #1 and #2 #5 Scare tactic? I mean it is good try for people who doesn't know much about computer softwares, but yeah, fail. #6 You know, not that hard to make Gameguard to be detected as a virus, there are actually several ways to do it. (See #1 and #2, and there are the clues of how to make GG be detected as virus)

Well, I didn't have to pay for my beta key. If you look really hard and talk to the right people, you can get your key within a few hours. Just saying.

Rubivi, I completely agree with you. There was a thread about this the other day, but it was deleted by the mods. You're not alone in feeling that this was a terrible "open beta" experience. I went to the official site, clicked on the "Play in Open Beta!" graphic and downloaded the client through one of the three methods mentioned on the official site. Nowhere does the official site state that you need to have either a pre-order or fileplanet subsriber status to play the "open beta." The only thing worse than the terrible "open beta" situation is the treatment you get on this forum while trying to air a legitimate complaint. |
