First off, thanks in advance for any replies/suggestions!

Hey all, I'm looking for a good Sci-Fi/space oriented type MMO game to play.

I was a charter member of Star Wars Galaxies (yeah got the goofy goggles) way back when.

Quit playing once I had run my toon through virtually every profession except Entertainer. I just couldnt handle the hours of dancing and stuff in the cantinas. Wow- that was awful.

Earth and Beyond was OK, but as I remember Activision basically dumped on it.

I have been patiently waiting for the new Star Trek MMO, but it seems like the wait will continue for a while (beta is supposedly starting soon). Ditto with SW:TOR (beta even further out)....

I've been told to avoid EVE at this point because of the games age, and treatment of new players (?!huh?!)- dunno about the accuracy of this warning. SWG is not worth going back to as it is dying.

Seems like there are a handful of great games coming out in the near future, but I'd really like to start playing again.

I don't mind a fair amount of grinding and P2P is fine as long as the game content is worth it. I play mostly during the weekdays so depending on the game, finding others to share in quests etc can be sometimes a little challenging.

Any suggestions? I really appreciate any thoughts shared.

ZenNye

EDIT: One thing I didnt mention that I really liked about SWG was the player housing. Nice to be able to have a place to dump my misc stuff, and my house was pretty cool ;)

I haven't really played many sci-fi games, but Rf Online could be worth a try. Its not really sci-fi, but you can be a robot. One thing is that the service sucks and it can be real CS based at times.

You might also want to look into Jumpgate, but I'm not real sure what phase it's in.

Jumpgate is in the FAIL phase.

They decided against a large persistent universe for instance pvp and a pve focused game. it's wow in space.

As for the OP Eve is decent and as is Anarchy online. both games are old but eve received a facelift so its eye pleasing and AO is supposed to have a revamp next year I think.

PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

I think you should try eve for yourself if it interests you, from what i've seen all the negative about the game comes from people who haven't tried it or played stupidly and suffered the consequences and then spat the dummy

other than that anarchy online is still quite fun, although I find the combat incredibly dull, but that is just me:)

also heard good things about taikodom if you can ever get the game to load, but that may just be a beta issue

personally I'm still having great fun in neocron 2 and playing for free since reaktor got into financial trouble, but that also means the game is unsupported at present

ryzom is half sci-fi half fantasy, best crafting system i've come across but worst resource collection

earthrise may also be worth a look

EVE online is an OK game, if you like to wait in Real Time to train a skill.......  Also it will make game easier if you have more then 1 account (I have 2).  Personally, I think the game is just ok.  Unlike all the EVE nuts claim that there are unlimited things that you can do.

Mining is very boring in secure area but without help go to unsafe zone is suicide, that's why you need 2 accounts or join a corp which is still boring IMO but I do it everyday while watching Netflix!! :D ( thx EVE, I watch a lot of movies on Netflix )  As long as you are in safe zone, you can just watch movies or play another game (I played Aion or farmville or simcity  sometime on the side), just move your ore from one ship to a hauler every few minutes, don't require too much attention.

Exploration:  pretty much all area looks the same, not sure what kind of exploration people are talking about.  It's not like you can land on somewhere and send out your avatar to walk around or catch creatures or fight monsters.  If you like to watch screensaver kind of stuff, I guess exploration is for you.

Fighting:  Have you ever play a 70s arcade games asteroid? Feel like that.

Crafting (invention etc):  again it's real time so Wait Wait Wait and you need skills for it.

Mission:  pretty much the standard MMO questing

P.S. I am close to getting a Hulk :D so it's not like I know nothing about this game.  It's not that difficult as other people said.  If you train your skills wrong, it's not the end of world, just more time to wait that's it.

I would look more into new Sci-fi MMO like SW: TOR or ST Online.  that look more promising and fun.

op just in case you dont know

eve is one huge world no multiple server just one BIG server thats a huge plus in a sci-fi mmo

yes you got to make friends early in here why

some player like to take you for a walk down the space then pk you

not legal true .they ll say sue me!

in my view this is the best space sci-fi mmo

they upgrade and update constantly the look you see in the game unless you got an old comodore 64 gcard is the look they want a space look

and this game will have a little kid soon dust something if i recall

and some part of dust will link with eve online

if your scared of not being a top dont worry the way the game is made you become a top dog very fast

the thing is this is a complex game with an economy system ,faction war for ressource to build ship etc

its try to find someone with a 21 day beta trial you can have an idea of the game

or if you dont want to bother check here i believe they got a 14 day trial

HUH?

What the hell are you talking about.

Eve's combat may be a more RTS type of fighting but I don't see the the connection between Asteroids and Eve are you trying to make the game look bad or troll?

As for your hulk comment you basically said mining sucked so why do you continue to do it?

I have a hard time believing you played Eve at all. You say the missions are standard for a mmo? The missions in Eve are just randomly generated so people could make isk to do other things its well below the quality of other mmos.

As for exploration it has nothing to do with empty space, the act of exploration in eve is used via the probing and scanning system. You scann for Combat sites, mining/salvage/Arch/hacking sites and wormholes that could be explored and colonized and even ran in massive groups similar to raid content in other MMOs.

You seem to be really far off for a guy who claims to be playing eve.

As for the OP a bunch of sci-fi games have trials check them out im sure you can find a sci-fi mmo game list on a wiki or whatever.

Just wait... There are so many sci-fi(isk) MMO's coming out in 10' you just need to have patience as I wouldn't personally recommend any thing currently on the market.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm dloading the EVE 14 day trial now. Figure I might as well give it a shot. I kind of figured the negative stuff I have read was possibly from players who didn't realize they were being taken advantage of.... I'm not quite a noob so I can usually see BS when it is headed my way.

As far as 1970's Asteroids style combat, well, umm..... let's just say I remember when Asteroids came out !!!!

Yeah Jumpgate looks promising but holy hell, they have had the beta sign up going for how long now? I agree- looks to be in fail phase. They just cant seem to get it open for at least beta, although peeps at PAX are supposedly getting a chance to mess with it.

I'm so sick of console games at this point. I even gave Perfect World a try for a bit. Played till 35 then my eyes started to bleed. It got boring very fast and it was of course fantasy based.

Hopefully the ST:O opens beta soon. That to me looks like everything I want to do and won't mind sinking money into.

Thanks again guys- I really appreciate the insight!

I agree 100%.

Not to say it's a bad game for everyone.  But for me and those with similar opinions it is quite stale and free of entertainment.  The few moments you are entertained will be drowned in so much wasted time flying back and forth(I'm talking hours at a time here) and lackluster gameplay (shooting rocks and "rats" for fun just doesn't cut it) that you will wither and die of boredom within months (it should be days but everything takes so dang long you won't realize it).  I base this opinion on facts, I played for months and all the while had a sense of "anytime now it will be a lot of fun".  I jumped from ship to bigger ship and outfitted rockets and missles and the whole 9 yards, and still it was a colossal waste of time.  When you try this out and you reach a point where you feel almost compelled to find a bot to shoot rocks for you ( because you just can't stand it anymore) don't say I didn't warn you.  9 )

Stop talking nonsense about Jumpgate, theyr focussing on both aspects. Eve is really slow, especially at start, yes i have played it for quiet some time, not just a couple of days.  and anarchy is just fugly..........
