I know I'm not the only one: I'm wondering if everybody who plays MMOs out there has a minor, non-nonsensical pet peeve (at least to most of the rest of the universe) that has made them leave games or decide not to buy them? For example, for years, players were having fits about Guild Wars because they could not change their character appearances (NCSoft eventually had to implement a system). I have friends who have left games because of the music or a metaverse plot twist.

Personally, I find that I end up leaving games on which I can't get one of my three or four "stock" character names. Just doesn't feel like my toon.

What's the most illogical reason that you've quit or decided not to buy an MMO?

Interesting topic =)

I would have to say the same about the naming, it has made me quite frustrated when I have an off-the-wall name hardly anyone would use and come to find out someone has a level 1 character with that name, and no longer even plays the game.

First person view in RPGs seems to be a peeve of mine as well.

It's kind of a big one. I need an open world. If I don't have an open world, it just doesn't feel real to me.

I'm being serious here: I hate it when games suck. Especially when they shouldn't.

It's like some developers have never picked up a game and played one themselves. Some really, really stupid design choices are made in games that have no business being there.

And, unfortunately, some are staples in MMOs.

Jumping. This didn't stop me from playing GW before WoW.. But then it stopped me from starting GW after I quit WoW.

I hate jumping in games, or rather, I hate how jumping is implemented in 99.9% of games.

I would have to agree with this...

The first time I stepped in Warcraft all I saw were people jumping like bunnies, I felt like I was watching a third-person halo game. I got used to seeing people jumping all the time after awhile but at first it was kind of irritating.

I was hard pressed to think of anything. I don't like games which don't have jumping, but have never avoided playing one for that reason.  Never let character customization, graphics or sound affect whether I stay with a MMO.

Its all about the gameplay really, and everything else is just optional in my book.  I cringe when people complain about things I find irrelevant like "combat animations" or whether or not you can swim in the water.

I prefer open worlds, but can have fun in a zoned or instanced game.

I guess the only illogical move I ever really made was not playing EQ1 when I was first starting out because the graphics weren't displaying correctly, and I was too new to the genre to realize I needed one of the "approved" video cards (was very important in those days) so I ended up skipping it entirely after about 1 hour played.

Oh, I almost forgot about character customization. I need at the very least a minimum of WoW level character customization. Champions and AoC are my best friends in this aspect.

Not really a pet peeve, but an illogical reason for leaving...

When the numbers game becomes transparent. We all know we have to kill X billion amounts of X and Y mobs. But when it just becomes painfully obvious just how repetitive it will be, I drop the game like hotcakes.

Games like LOTRO, WAR,etc, that make a meta-game out of it just makes it worse.

Gear. I'm quite particular about my in game representation. Some times I just can't bear logging in again because I know just how shoddy I look.

If it is a game I'm already loosing interest in the pet peeves, like getting stuck, rollbacks, or whatever will push me into a bad mood enough to quit but I don't quit a game because of minor annoyances. Now, if it is a game that I really enjoy not much will keep me from having fun, even if I frequently crash or have to relog due to bugs.

Things like the harpies in WOW.  Small, flapping things, millions of the little buggers, and an aggro range of about half the zone.  I hate them.  Not in "find them challenging" but hate the way they just flap around and absolutely swarm you on the slightest provocation.  Most games have an equivalent.  These things just get the red mist descending, the teeth gnashing and on a couple of occasions the credit card transactions cancelled (though not for long)

Lack of Collision detection in games really turns me off. As it limits my choices a lot its not an absolute requirement, but as I review the list of mmos I really enjoyed I find they all had a form of collision detection. As such Im stuck playing COH and guild wars only for now. Played UO a lot. The only exception was LOTRO which I enjoyed a lot. The slower paced animation of combat made it feel more solid, and the importance of my burglars placement kinda made up for it.

I have 2

Names as I cant stand Omgpwnasuraous crap from elitist kids rebelling, I never group with them, I always gank them and they dispurse... if I server has a mass collection of them, I roll a new server than to put up with their global chat spams all day.

Hackers, Everygame has them but if a game makes me feel like they will always get away with it and they can use it openly ... and nothing happens I leave, not really illogical but I cant stand bad companies who dont solve problems with hacking.

I don't like crazy names, you know, stuff like Stabsyurbak and stuff like that.

Also, since the days of EQ1 I have always HATED fighting mobs that poison me. I guess it was because I played a warrior and when those snakes would poison me I would have to sit for hours to get my health back. Never made me quit though.

I also hate Murlocs with a passion. And the crocodiles outside of Tortage...

...and those crazy names...

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

When a MMORPG is released and it turns out to be just a Action Online Game. Of course a Action Online Game can be fun, but I expect allot more if a game is developed and it calls itself a MMORPG.

Illogical would be tab+hot key combat, since they all have it.

What really irks me is running around for quests.

Well the most illogical thing I can think of in MOST MMO's is MOBS such as rats, pigs, bats etc etc dropping coins, runes, swords, armor  guns etc etc... WTF?

MOBS such as rats bats etc should drop the resource they are made from i.e. fur, meat, teeth, claw and so on which can then be used in crafting professions.

The ONLY MOBS that should drop coins, runes, swords, armor, guns etc should be Humanoid in nature. And whatever you see the Humanoid wearing/weilding should be what is dropped.

Quoted for truthiness. The loot tables are stupid.
