You can access plenty of free realms content for free without being forced into purchasing things. At higher levels most of the higher level recipes require membership and things of that nature, but most of the content can be accessed free. Yes the pet trainer must buy a pet with real cash, so it really isn't a "free" class. Even though the game constantly tries to get you to subscribe or buy stuff you are not forced to. The cash shop does have items that are more powerful than ingame rewards or at least as good. That sort of removes any need to engage in the game, since the content is bypassed and the reward was instant (similar to EQ2 crafting on dungeons).
Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good aspects to free realms. The engine is pretty solid, models well done, etc. Where free realms fails is that it just isn't a good game and there really isn't much game. It is litterly a stripped down mmo framework with minigames based on popular console and web games forced into the empty holes. The majority of the game revolves around leveling characters by playing clones of bejeweled, cooking mana, tower defense, virtual pets, etc. When you get done doing a specific minigame for 20 levels the only thing that is really left is leveling another job to 20 by doing other minigames. (old soe haunt: love of filling xp bars as content) The world is tiny and by tiny I mean at level 1 you can explore the entire world in an hour or two. So there really isn't some great force keeping content from those who don't spend a fortune, because that game really doesn't have much content. The content it does have gets boring pretty fast.
I don't want to be to long winded, but yes several soe haunts ruin this game. The best way I can sum it up is by saying soe has lost touch with what players want.

The funny thing about SOE is their devs go to the same bars (in Austin) as all the other MMO companies. These guys swap ideas as exemplified by SWG's Quest Chronical system which is a copy of CoH Encounter Architeture. When will they learn that company policy and company theme can get in the way of fun and thus profit? I will say that with FR they have learned the value of a quality finished product, MAYBE, but they need to go further and find what it is that keeps all those kids playing the browser based F2P games that FR isn't doing. Again, you gotta give a little to get a little. |

Free realms is just a byproduct of a design process that focuses on how to get players to spend more money in different ways instead of, how do to make a kick ass game that people will want their friends to play with them. Soe can get all the technical aspects of an mmo right, but they really lost touch with what they are doing. It just is not part of their corporate culture anymore. The driving force right now is sales charts, marketing and revenue streams.

They have the biggest opportunities to ride on the wave of Star Wars popularity already built up by these campaigns. Bioware on the other hand is in a time period that (relatively) very few know much about. I'm NOT saying TOR is destined to be less popular, I'm sure it'll attract a healthy population of die-hards, but this new Clone Wars MMO and SWG certainly aren't out of the picture.
You're a funny chap Obraik, you spent the best part of 2 years openly dismissing BioWare's Star Wars mmo as just a "rumour" despite insummountable evidence and yet the first "rumour" that comes along that supports your pro-SOE agenda and.... you're all over it like a cheap suit. ...The spread of secondary and latterly of tertiary education has created a large population of people, often with well developed literary and scholarly tastes, who have been educated far beyond their capacity to undertake analytical thought. |

Of course. That's how all the SWG cheerleaders are. They would never say anything negative about it even if the evidence is against it. |

Wish they would bring back PRE CU SWG instead. That was a good game. Just don't add Pizza ordering system to this one. |

Totally. Where are my ewoks, my Star Wars christmas special, and my 3po with his head on backwards, dammit!? Don't get me wrong - I still have 3 active SWG subs out of my 6. I have a wookie on one of my cars and the rebel alliance symbol on the other, I convinced my wife last weekend that getting a Star Wars tattoo would be okay, as long as it wasn't on my forehead, I have serious discussions about whether we need to buy another bookshelf for my figures. I am a Star Wars fan by any measure. Star Wars is not high art. It's f'in awesome, it's a hell of a lot of fun, and it's got a long history. But it's not art. Jar Jar sucks, but I don't hate him any more than I hate Ewoks smashing AT-STs with logs. Admit it - when you were 12, a browser based SW game, had it existed in any reasonable form, would have blown your head open. I mean, seriously, I was playing Empire Strikes Back on the Atari, and thinking it was the best thing ever, and spending all my allowance on that trench running Star Wars arcade game. I think the old stuff is better, but I'm not going to hate the new stuff because it's not what I remember. I know, this is the haven of those who will never forget, and never forgive, but honestly - how does this hurt you any more than Droids? Who am I? |

No matter how simple or easy is for SOE to do , it makes me wonder why LA would entrust its franchise to SOE again. I comment further about this on the Rodo Report. |

Its tough to find confirmation of this rumor from SOE or LA. It sounds simple enough for SOE to do..Take the Free Realms format and StarWarsy it , albeit Clone Wars. As I mentioned on the Report , I find it hard to believe that LA has forgot much less forgive SOE for the mishandling of SWG. In Case they did and this rumored Self ripoff of a current SOE product comes into being, I am sure that we can remind them.... We might as well since we will be counted among the active player base by SOE. |

It's a casual childrens game ppl.are you too dense to realise it's not a hardcore MMO?Have you been grinding too long to remeber that MMO's are games and thier supposed to be fun? This is for CHILDREN,just like the clone wars cartoons are for CHILDREN,just like Jar Jar Binks is for CHILDREN.If your one of the ones that get upset over things for CHILDREN to enjoy it's time for you to get a life.
