Kinda underwhelmed now, both looking at fan and haters. After avoiding it so many years, I played Bloodelf for 2 weeks now, and I am surprised how mediocre it is. It sorta reminds me of those cheap F2P asia games, stuff like Perfect World or whats it named. Fetch 20 spider legs, kill 10 bats... blah. It really has zero spirit or anything fascinating. I don't want to write this to bash WOW... but after not playing it so many years when all had an opinion about WOW, I wanted to see for myself. I mean, I don't understand the haters either, because it is quite standard fare.

McDonadls is the thing coming to my mind.

All those quests up to level 20-something I have seen are so dull and uninspired, they are like some random quest generator software had made them. Maybe other starter areas are more interesting, I dunno. But tbh... why THIS game has 11 million subscribers is beyond me. Truth be told almost EVERY other pay per months MMO I have played was better.

And this world... colours and forms like in Free Realms! lol I always felt like playing some Play-Doh game for 6 year old kids, walking with all those bright and clown coloured people with giant boots and giant shoulderpads.

Ok... I try not to enter the WOW bashing choir. Its just so damn mediocre. Why this of all games has so many subs... heck even AoC or VG are more fun to play than this! *shakes head*  Bizarre... really bizarre why this is such a success.

I would say that most quests before Northrend are pretty much the same... and the quests in Northrend are only slightly better. If you're looking for a brain teaser, WoW isn't it. If your looking for a casual MMO to pass a bit of time then choose WoW.

The benefits of WoW are large World, interesting classes and good end game, assuming you like the traditional end game of dungeons, raids or pvp.  Crafting needs work. Armor and Weapon crafting is meaningless if you raid.

Most people would disagree with you. About the Mcdonalds thingy,I still don't understand why people still bring it up. Is wow any cheaper then other so called "premium" mmos wich all try to be like wow (exept EVE) ?

Lol, its like 90% of the quests are "we are too many X in place Y, could you please decimate them" or "I need 10 legs/snouts/ears of X for my soup/pie/whatever". Really, almost all of them!

Man, I used to bitch about VG quests & lore but compared to that VG quests are deep and rich! Tsk.

Granted WoW his it's bad quest, then again, it also has it's great quest that are well written and tons of fun.   Just like many MMORPG's, some quest are well done and others are not and all these games are littered with fed-x and go fetch quest of one kind or another.   The difference is Blizzard does it better.    Plus the game play makes it more tolerable.

Now come on.

Whether or not you like the game is your business. there are certainly many reasons for people not to like it.

but having experienced perfect world and this game, wow is far more polished and has far more going for it.

Yes, the art design is colorful and fanciful but that was Warcraft. Especially Warcraft III.

the quests are standard fare but not different from many other games, including the upcoming Aion (which I will be playing).

I would say this. Try another race. It won't be drastically different but for some reason the blood elf and dranei areas are extremely placid for my tastes. I couldn't even get a dranei character past 10. yet with my dark elf I could at least get him to a whopping 37.

Other than that this is standard kill x and go to y. LOTRO has a TON of this, especially in the last expansion. So if you are not a fan of this type of game play then more power to you, no reason you should be. However, I think one can at least give the creators their due and acknowledge that the level of detail and polish is far greater than a free to play game. Runes of Magic might compare as it seems that it is inspired a bit by wow. I say inspired but for those who have experienced the game they might know where the games diverge.

Saying that after 2 weeks you know what WOW is like saying you could box at a professional level after 2 weeks of practice.

The appeal of World of Warcraft is about the reward after significant investment. Players who cap out have a lot more to do than just level up some more. It's about the advancement and the experience and story to many players not just the level up to pwn.

Also saying that WOW is like Perfect World is equally ignorant. Perfect World was developed the way it is because of WOW. Look at the release dates. It's like BC and AD in history, MMOs before WOW and MMOs after WOW.

There are the players that say WOW ripped of other games blah blah blah, yeah they did but they polished and refined it to a higher level. Thats why everyone is ripping it off.

Experience some Mid to High Level content if you have the patience for it. Of course that could be said with many games. But its much different at higher levels.

MMOs at level 1-20 are all going to be pretty much identical just with different colors, character models and text.

Why has MS been so widely deployed?

Why is the iPod/iPhone so popular?

Certainly not because they are the best or most original. However, both companies have excelled at advertising their products and that is where WoW succeeds as well.

Beyond advertising, it is pretty polished and stable, it has regular content updates and it has a decent degree of replay value via alt characters. Naturally, if you just can't get into the game, that stuff isn't going to mean much to you.

Ultimately, it's a game where people can log on, collect a dozen bear tongues, get a flashy achievement, and log off. They can also log on and run a dungeon in less then an hour. Really, Blizzard has put a lot of effort into making this game accessible to various play types and for many it apparently works.

Yunbei, I think WoW has gotten a bad rap for Kill X quests.

In fact, WoW has had some of the more involving quest lines I have ever seen.

How about stopping a conspiracy faction of Dwarves who want to blow up a dam? There are murder mysteries and ghost stories (Duskwood), there is a whole faction of pissed off humans who got short changed by the King on a repair bill that have amassed a secret underground conspiracy to destroy Stormwind. There are so many unique and interesting stories here.

You are not reading them.

You are reading "Please kill this person" and that's it.

Get into the story, and you will be fine.

By the way Yunbei is also a troll or is lying or both.

Look at his post history. He says he played WoW back when it first came out...

And believe it or not, the questing is the best part of the game.  Level 80 gameplay is totally overhyped: raiding is a horrible grind, and the rewards are cookie-cutter and not very satisfying.

I'm curious though, what MMOs are you currently enjoying?  I've been trying to find one that satisfies me, but instead I'm becoming a curmudgeon who would rather talk about the "good ol' days."  I tried WAR and I enjoyed it less than WoW.  EVE has a ton of potential, and I could see myself giving it another real effort, although it's a bit monotonous.  Any suggestions?

Being a Bloodelf you experienced they more up to date beginner area, if you would have played one of the other races it would have been even more dull.

To give WoW its due though, vanilla really did become fun back in the day once you hit your low 50's and started doing BlackRock and all the other dungeons to 60.

Now given the small part my view is very limited. I played a Paladin, and I dunno... the bigger part of the combat I was in mere auto-combat the entire 20 first levels. I found it quite boring to watch in any way. I had tons of skills, most were heals or rez or other stuff I did not use much. So most of the time I was in this autocombat and than once or twice this hammer out of the sky thing attack.

I guess comparing it to LOTRO or EQ2 are fair to compare, and IMVPO both had way more atmosphere and mood. I can't 100% put my finger on it. I guess this play-doh like graphics killed a lot of the mood for me.

And OH MY GOSH I had to READ the quest texts to know where to go! What a hassle, lol. I mean, I love to read them when they are worth to read. Heh, likely I am spoilt by modern MMOs, where generally you have a target dot on the map. Or why quest items littler the general bags. Or why my char didnt auto turn towards the enemy and I always had this damn "you are looking in the wrong direction". Or why the timer limited spells dont memorize what I pressed last and execute it then when the timer is over, no I have to gaze on it and press it again.

Small things where I felt like playing a game from ages past, where I am used to more comforts than WOW. Or sending me 20 times to the same place. Now bring 20 of this. Run towards quest zone, run back... oh sorry I forgot NOW I need another 10 of X in the same area. ARGH. Why dont they just hand me a list and done with it. I spent way more time running back and fro than in other MMOs. Or at least it felt that way. I would not say hardcore or not hardcore is the question, but WOW lacks some of the luxurities I am used to from more modern MMOs.

But the vital point for me was that a game like LOTRO or EQ2 had way more depth and fun in its quests and classes. Don't ask me for indepth explanation. If you dont share that, its fine. I am just totally surprised why this game has been this succesful. I just entirely do NOT get it.

I always considered 1-60 the best part of the game. So if your haviing a problem staying awake now it doesnt bode well for your future in WOW.

WoW is a fun and easy game to get into, even for non-gamers.

WoW wasn't going to have quests, past the starting areas, from the article I read.
A lot play testers, said after they ran out of quests to do they didn't fell like playing anymore, so blizz made the whole game quest base, based off that.

You can only made so many variations on quests you can do.... but I think they did a good job.
Some latter missions, which are more like mini games, are fun.

AoC was fun for a while but the combat system got old after the newest wore off.

I do think there were a few interesting quests in WoW back in the day.

Comparing it to some F2P asian garbage is a bit over the top imho.

But hey, whatever :p
