How come? We all use abbreviations don't we. e.g. WOW, WAR, EQ, etc as well as names of dungeons. We use abbreviations for common phrases, e.g. dot, lfg, pst, brb, omw etc. Some people take it further than others and also abbreviate words such as please, your, ready etc but surely that is just an extension to what we all do anyway. When it is combination with any words like noob or pwn or the number 3 then the author is definitely a moron but as abbreviations in their own right I don't usually take much offence (I even use rdy in groups for example). |

-When a new player asks for advice in channel, and people respond with snide remarks. -When certain individuals use the channel as their own personal chat room, dominating all conversations. -Overused shorthand, it has its uses in groups or immediate area while fighting, and you need to type something quick. In the public channel folks usualy have the few extra seconds needed to form complete words.

There's a difference between someone who is abbreviating to save time in a combat situation and someone who can't spell 90% of their words, doesn't comprehend punctuation or capitalization, etc. When every message coming through is a jumble of random letters that you have to try to decipher, it's just not worth doing. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |

Just to clarify that annoys me as well but that isn't what we are talking about. What we are referring to is people who use shorthand or acronyms for words or phrases. As long as what they are saying is coherent and not just jumbled text it's perfectly fine. I personally don't hate on these people as this type of text is an Internet norm. There is a MAJOR difference between this and leet speak as well. I don't really care for leet speak either as it's just annoying. Someone in a group asking "R u rdy?" however is perfectly fine as this is just Internet shorthand and is perfectly understandable and coherent.
This is internet chat and not some college term paper after all. If the Spelling Nazis don't like it I would have to say that they should steer clear of the internet in general as it's everywhere already and spreading fast. Probably 80-90% of gamers already use this type of shorthand to some degree so if some are going to put these people on ignore their internet existence will be a lonely one to be sure.
As long as you can understand what someone is trying to say the way they say it shouldn't matter. Shorthand and acronyms are already an Internet norm and will only become more prevalent as time goes on so you'd better get used to seeing it.

I love chat channels actually. I love the idea of holding random conversations with people in the same district as me, especially if we are discussing something that I personally find interesting, and it is a polite conversation without the unnecessary flames. My particular favourite moment was when I was in Shing Jea Monestary in Guild Wars, and we were talking about what religion we belonged to. Normally, Shing Jea just has to be the most annoying place in Guild Wars because that's where all the annoying people tend to hang out, but amazingly, none of them were there, and I really was having the time of my life. But what really, really does annoy me though, is when someone butts into a conversation because he or she does not like what is being said, and proceeds to flame said person. It generally turns the mood extremely ugly after that, and it makes me a sad panda because I hate it when people don't get along. I can normally stand anything else, even gold spamming and Chuck Norris jokes (which I normally try to take part in as well actually) but flame wars... they put me in an instant bad mood. I don't mind chat channels. I must have reported thousands of people over the years for racists, stupid, and inappropriate comments. Don't be terrorized! You're more likely to die of a car accident, drowning, fire, or murder! More people die every year from prescription drugs than terrorism LOL! |

There is a line drawn between abbreviations use and abuse. If I have to read your text 2x to figure out WTF you are talking about Ill just ignore it. |
