Just wondering, but do you think there should be sword in sci fi mmos? The only one i think is Star-Wars, and thats because it is based off the movies. But I just want to know what others think about it. Sometimes it seems like there are sci fi mmos that are masked as fantasy genres. |

Why wouldn't they?
Just because something is "sci fi based" doesn't mean everyone would have a blaster.
Altho the swords/knives would most likely be a slightly higher tech than what we might have. |

Swords and other bladed weapons are used in Dune. Dune however actually provides a reason for swords being used. The Holtzman shields that generate a protective field around the individual (or ship) wearing the generator, react to the velocity of an incoming object. Fast moving objects like bullets/other projectiles are deflected by the shield. A slow moving object however can pass through the shield. This offers the wearer protection while still allowing them to interact with their environment. As a result a type of specialized hand to hand combat hand to be designed which uses slow movements to bypass shields but still do damange to the target. Swords offer the control and precision necessary for this specialized type of combat. Sorry for the nerdy wall o' text :) |

Sword/gun combo would make more sense, along the lines of Gears of War weapon, but not as gritty. More finesse. |

So I was originally going to type this giant wall of text talking about where a sword would work and where it wouldn't, but to sum it all up without the wall of text is: it really depends on the scenario and the atmosphere of the game. "IRL is a pretty upstanding MMO with thousands of classes, a lot of PvP and even some pretty unique emotes and titles you can acquire. Explore that world first, then we'll talk about this virtual one." |

It doesn't make any sense, but it's so fun/adventurous that people rarely care. |

It only makes sense cause it looks cool. In real SCI-FI it would depend on technology level. Its hard to believe that civilisation that has weapons like disintegrator would ever need anything else

You can't ask a guy to get by without his sword. Nuff said. |

Don't bring a blade to a gun-fight. Nuff said. |

In hard sci-fi, you'd need a good reason. Dune was mentioned already, and they're used in Traveller mostly aboard ships, where firearms could damage the hull (killing yourself just so you can kill your opponent). They could also be used in settings where ammunition is scarce or firearms are otherwise unreliable. In space opera, you can have them just because swords are cool. Star Wars has lightsabers simply because laser swords are effing badass. |

There have been statings of THQ making a 40k MMO. No clear information on anything about it, other than they started on it (Or will be starting soon) |

And yes, they are currently working on it and another game called Darksiders (which isn't an MMO). "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

swords definatly should be in sci fi MMOs i think it adds variety. Its no different than a bow that shoots laser beams in a sense. Ten people who speak make more noise than ten thousand who are silent. |

when it comes down to it there are times when you run out of ammo and get too close to the enemy. Thats why the bayonett was invented (and why most soldiers carry around knives). I would say 40k is a good representation of sword use in a sci-fi setting. As for game terms...why not have the sword guy wield a gun in one hand and the sword in the other. Solves a lot of problems right there. MMO wish list: -Changeable worlds |

Yea, but why the hell would anyone use a blade. When you can point your (unlimited energy resource) disintegrator , squeeze the trigger and whatever was there turns into vapor.

I think as a secondary or close-combat weapon, using some sort of a blade is fine, but using a low tech blade as your primary weapon makes about as much sense as using a rock as your primary weapon. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |
