So basicly Aion is exactly like WoW but with some more PvP and less of everything else? Doesnt sound very exciting :p If WoW = The Beatles |

Aion is very WOW-like in the first 20 something levels because character advancement takes place running standard kill/shuttle/fetch quests ad nasuem. This is a trademark of a WOW clone and many games have done this in recent years. DAOC was nothing like this. (nor was EQ) You had some quests, they were filler, you leveled your character by grinding mobs in camps. Where the two games come together is in the RVR style combat, but even there its quite different because the 3rd faction is played by NPC's instead of other players. Even after a player reaches level 20, the PVE questing can continue all the way to 50 from what we're told, which also makes it very WOW-like. Diffference is, lots of the quests can take place in the Abyss, which adds a whole new flair I suppose, but its really not a lot different than playing a faction based version of AOC.

Originally posted by Papadam Nah, I think it fools players by doing everything a bit better than WoW does. That's the only 'difference' as far as I know anyway. Oh yeah, the lore is different zomg. NCSoft took a big risk there to actually make it different in some way, thumbs up from me.

im soooo tired of seeing these threads. WoW vs Aion and yada yada. before you say any game is "like wow" do some research on past mmo's. mmo's all have similar features for the most part, they have been repeated so many times that its expected in every mmo. 1) kill mobs for exp 2) quest's and/or missions: on a personal note, i love how people talk about innovation and bringing something new to the table other than the same old " go here and kill this and bring 10 of these". well, lets here what youve come up with..... oh thats right, u cant think of anything new because all u can do is complain. your telling me that outta all the companies out there getting paid to try to create innovative new idea's, you can just come up with 1 that works, and hasnt been thought of? gtfo. 3) classes are generally the same for fantasy type mmo's. before wow there were druids, hunters, priest, assasins, shamans, paladins, mages, and not exactly death knights, but classes very similar, like dark knights and death knights. u get the picture. 4) U.I: the ui used in aion and wow is just very popular, and its been used before either game was even thought of. 5) talent tree: this hasnt been done in every mmo granted, but there are plenty before wow where you had to use points on skills. diablo2 wasnt even a mmo and it had a talent tree in it. so lets just stop with the aion is a wow clone. its not a clone. it just has similar features. just like wow has similar features to EQ. lets just ignore threads like this. its just a meaningless debate in which noobs who have no mmo experience, and are wow addicts, try to say everything is a wow clone. p.s this debate is like saying FFXI is a WoW clone.. even though ffxi came out first lol. |

Originally posted by Hyanmen How do you level up in Aion? By doing quests (!) and killing monsters. Grinding endlessly, basically. How do you kill monsters? Click on a mob, spam your abilities until mob dies. Over and over again. How's the endgame like? There are raids (hey that sounds familiar) and PvP you can do to get better equipment (which game has this feature again...) How's the leveling structure? Get to the level cap asap, since the fun starts there. Oh boy, is this a deja vu? Classes? Include Assassin, Mage, Priest, Warrior, Sorcerer, Ranger and Cleric. Where have I heard these names before? Oh yes, in Generic Korean MMO X! There's a talent tree? Originality 101. Graphics? I saw similar graphics in a game once, I think it was Lineage 2... Especially the characters look oddly familiar.
I can't wait to buy the game and do the same thing I've done in 100 games before again, only this time with prettier graphics and more everything! Oh joy!
What are YOU expecting from a MMORPG? We play MMORPG because we KNOW those classes are there and that's what we're familiar and comfortable with. We just expect every new/next game to be more polished. The main structure of a MMORPG is Questing, Grinding, Collecting, PVPing, etc. If you don't enjoy it then go play something else, we all know what we're getting into but we all just like to b**** and moan. Everyone puts WoW on such a high pedestal, like it's the first 3D MMORPG ever created so any other game would be a clone of it. Everyone has their own opinion, this is true but to me, WoW is the most noob of them all. What does WoW actually have that other great MMO's don't other than the number of subscribers they have? It's all the same crap when it comes down to it. PS. I've played both and I won't be playing either.

Really Aion to me feels like a less grindy Lineage 2. I don't really get a WoW vibe from it other than the basic kill 10 of these type of quests. |

Originally posted by Corrupted There are many ways to quest, grind, collect, and so on. Many type of battle systems can be created (like on the single RPG market there's the Fallout 3 type combat and the Final Fantasy XII type for example). Right now it's just digustingly obvious how much the companies clone each other's work that it all feels the same after the 10th time. It doesn't have to be this way. I am going to be able to play the MMO I enjoy in a year or so (that is different enough), but I can still come and give my opinion about the -other- MMO's that can't be distinguished from each other except from the better graphics. =P

Heh, I can only figure that is sarcasm. In the perspective of some every game which isnt EVE is a WOW clone. At some point it stops to say anything when some yell WOW CLONE on every single MMO. That entire perspective says zero about a game imo. |

EVE is a blatant WoW clone. You know why? EVE obviously stole some of its skill structure partly from WoW. Yeah, I went there. I'm right, you're wrong. C wut I did thar? Explore that world first, then we'll talk about this virtual one." |

Class-based characters with levels as the primary means of advancement, as stolen from D&D and other pen-and-paper RPGs. Interface and controls stolen from Everquest and Asheron's Call 2. Uses the four basic class types as stolen from D&D (Fighter, Magic-User, Cleric, Thief). Equipment is used as the primary means of character statistic improvement, as stolen from MUDs and popularized through Everquest and other early MMOs. It's like WoW because it steals from all the same places. That's not necessarily a bad thing - for every person who doesn't like the lack of new ideas, there's someone who likes the familiar playing style in a new setting. |
