General Discussion  » Having now seen the demos, is anyone else wondering why SWTOR isn't a console game?

From the demos, SWTOR looks like a fast-pased but simple combat game. The GU showed only one hotbar with twelve slots total which - I speculate - means you only have twelve actions available to you at any one time. In WoW, I have six hotbars of ten slots each.

So, why has Bioware designed this game for the PC when it would seem to be much more suited to the console market?

Not default you don't.  And certainly not at level 5-10

Yes, that's a fair point. However, the hotbar was so large that it seems it might be difficult to fit in many other hotbars without taking up too large a propertion of the screen.

Two notes, the game is still in pre-alpha and they were only showing off a few skills, and they have said that the final UI will be very customizable (like WoW, WAR), so there will be multiple hotbars. :)

I am much unimpressed

Maybe because the game is so OVER hyped.

But combat seemed meh

Graphic certanly meh ( lot of repeating npc models)

Animation meh (run animation was bad ... and thats big problem)

All In all , i see nothing ground breaking. Fun single(co op) RPG. But surely not a next gen MMO

personally this should not even be considered an mmo. If bioware thinks this is a mmo than they need to be brought in by the other mmo companies of what a true mmo looks like. This is going to be soooo linear!

Who says it isn't? There ARE some MMO's that run on consoles.

And I wish people would quit whining about "this isn't an MMO game" while totally ignoring the latest video put out that shows a group of people chatting and solving a problem. That IS an MMO.

My website is closed temporarily. Hopefully it will only be a short delay.

No, it shows a Single Player Online game with some networking features.

I think people too often refer to old school games as the definition of MMO. They just don't like thinking outside of the box, or expanding what the term can mean.

I see no reason why it shouldn't be a console game.

From what I gather it's going to be primarily single player story driven game with opportunities to group. This is like most MMOs out there except they usually forgo the story aspect.

Some of the best experiences I've had in MMOs have been in the starter areas where the games force you into a linear pre-thought pre-scripted pattern. Conan's Tortage was awesome the first time through. The tutorial for Fallen Earth is pretty damn good. Huxley's PvE missions..etc etc..

Too many MMOs to this point have been very weak on story. They make it so every character from every profession from every alignment can deal with the same NPCs for the same reasons.

I've felt too often like a real actor in a porn movie. What's my motivation? You don't need motivation just perform the actions!

I only used 4 buttons in SWG pre-cu for my BH, then the CU hit and I used more moves than just 4. I think this is more like  CU SWG TBH. If you didn't mind the CU, then this game isn't for you.

You could say most games on the market are this way. Are we gonna start a long drawn out yawning debate on what constitutes an mmo? Please no.

Played : WOW, LOTRO, COH/COV, EQ2, SWG, and WAR.
Playing EVE Online and AOC.
Wtg for SW:TOR and WOD

How did you get that from what you saw? From what  I saw the questing looked somewhat robust in the fact that your choices actually dictated the route your mission takes (much like a single player game).  Thats more of a nonlinear themepark.

If this launched as a single player game I'd be all over it... since its launching as an MMO I'm doubly all over it.  Every last person here is looking at this from the same ol' MMO standpoint.. already comparing it to WoW.  I'm very impressed by the way the  smuggler handled and the siths actions were very fluid,    it IS impressive.

That type of combat is something you haven't and will not see from any other MMO on the market.

No we haven't seen a complete MMO aspect of the game with how many players will be interacting, but at this early stage, what I am seeing is pretty cool.

This early in the dev its impressive.  Anyone remember videos of Aion from years ago and then today?  They have a lot of time to nail down animations, UI and skill trees.  And frankly its Bioware which like Blizzard pretty much means its a lock that it'll be good AND released when its done not before.  Whether it can keep the hype train going who knows because launch is an awful long ways away.

Never trust anyone until they prove themselves otherwise.

I won't compare this to other MMO's...I get so sick of that.

From what I have seen, especially where the NPC's you shoot are smart and take cover, it looks VERY cool.

I wish I could find the source but a way back, I recall hearing how they were going to try to release it for a number of consoles at the same time they release it for the PC.  No mention of which consoles though so stay tuned.

And can people stop trying to make snappy statements based off 'guesses'?  Wait and see whats going to be.

Oh man....

This early in the dev ?!?!?

Bioware announced they are working on "unnamed MMO" 4 years ago , it is one year since its known this MMO is SWTOR

So yea...its only 4 years in the dev. Enough for most to put out two MMOs

Srsly. Even WoW took 4-5 years to develop and we all remember how poopy that was at launch.
