this is how the forum members at Fallen Earth handle people who post negative feedback to their game - threatening to post home addresses...should this be considered acceptable? thoughts? |

I don't think it even matters. It's not like it's the worst thing ever posted on the internet, or even in MMO game forums. "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

You really are taking this too seriously. Out of every 1 million of these type of replies maybe 1 could or would actually carry through on it. Remember the equation. Social skills + anonymity = skill + toughness divided by actual ability. ______________________________ WAR is coming. Look busy. |

i know the poster is just being a twat, but the point is the people in the Fallen Earth forums are employing some heavy-handed tactics. from the apparent desperation, it looks like they're aware they're on a sinking ship.
and a privacy breach isn't something to play around with. a threat is a threat. they're not children and shouldn't screw with legalities. |

Yep, people can sue for it. But, I look at why would a person get banned in the first place. Being an asshat. That person wanted to push the limits of the site admins. Now, personally, I don't ever feel sorry for those types of people. There's a mature way to act and then there's the ones who either want to try to look cool or get ballsy because they are anonymous on the internet. I'm just not going to feel sorry for them if this is the case. You reap what you sow. Now, if the person just posted a constructive criticism and didn't resort to name calling...basically presented their thoughts in a respectful manner, then yeah, I can sympathize with them. But I, like many, have been on these internets a LONG time and I'm pretty sure if someone did something to get banned, they earned it. If that person doesn't respect that site's rules why on earth would I give a darn about a threat to their internet privacy rights. If you want respect, you have to give it. "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

It´s true that the post is not too kind. But actually, if you carefully read it, you will realize, that the poster actually warned you not to put your personal information as open as it seems to be now in the internet. And I am sure that the admins already reacted accordingly to that post too... |

Not quite, but I knew this was going to be used as an excuse sooner or later in this thread. Again, if this person had of presented their "thoughts" in a mature manner, said their piece and moved on, non of this would have happened. But, they didn't, evidence the banning and now this. Some people just have to learn you can't always just say what you want anytime, anywhere. There are people out there that will punch you in the mouth at times. "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

I agree on that one post. Of course, I reserve the right to pass my own judgement on a person who creates the forum name of "fapfapfap". That said, I think it is warranted to look at the post history for Mr. fapfapfap. I have a feeling being respectful isn't one of the qualities we could identify with his postings. I could be wrong, but I just don't get the gut feeling I will be. "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

Just another tactic of trying to say something so outrageous in a "forum fight" to get the other person to capitulate. Whether or not they would actually post it, who knows. But the threat of having it posted would cause most folks to back down. "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

*edit* i don't even see what was so wrong with their post to make someone get so hostile anyway. |

Again, there is the question of the content of said 4 posts. I'd say that generalizing the sum total of the FE forum regulars by the actions of a few "zealots" is pretty extreme too, don't you think?
*edit: The anonymity of the internet mixed with testoerone is the basis of the majority of forum hostility. "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

There are always flagellants in every army. (Just for reference I post the definition of the word I'm using. THe other defs could take this topic on a wrong turn, lol) flag·el·lant (fl?j'?-l?nt, fl?-j?l'?nt) 1. One who whips, especially one who scourges oneself for religious discipline or public penance.

i def think they're crazy anyway, getting sued can't be a good thing. Sorta. I was more playing for the religious fanatics who defend their faith (in this case a game) against all threats, real or not. Whether they beat themselves, who knows. I'm not here to judge them for that, lol. "Many nights, my friend... Many nights I've put a blade to your throat while you were sleeping. Glad I never killed you, Steve. You're alright..." |

A bit off topic, but normally your home address isn't something you have a right to keep private. Social Security numbers, credit cards etc sure, but your address is pretty much available to everyone. Here in the states your address is transmitted with your landline phone number (for 911 purposes) and I've had local pizza shops confirm my home address just from calling them. Now, if the FE dev's have agreed not to share it you might have a case, but if some random fans manage to somehow discern your home address, you really can't do anything to stop them from a legal perspective. Back to the topic. No, the behavior would be unacceptable, but I suspect the poster in question was being a jerk, and is getting the reaction he or she deserves.
