When you signed up for an account you had to have a Cd-key. You paid for the cd-key which can also be found in a box in physical stores. To summarize paying for a cd-key is the same as paying for the client/game and also gives you the ability to make an account, which in turn enables you to starting paying monthly/subscription fees. |

Pay to play. Research the game, view footage, read forums, read reviews, etc.,... If you are truly upset over having to pay to buy the game, then take the time to 'research' prior to purchase. If they gave away 'free to play' or 'trial' accounts, then the 'gold farmers' would absolutely ruin the game from the get-go. You'll also have a ton of kiddies running around 'lost' and spamming how the game sucks... if it's too complex or doesn't hold their hand enough. I'm not saying the game needs to be 'hard-core' or anything overly complex... but I do hope that requiring players to purchase a key prior to playing will equate into a better audience/player pop (at least at first). They also need to move boxes/sell copies and make stock holders happy. The other thing, they have to have a ton of sales so that sites like this will shout 'eleventybillion sold!!!!!!!!' and the 'wow killer is born' posts/articles will begin. Okay, so this last paragraph lost some focus... Anyway... buy the box if/when you are able to make an educated decision on doing so.

When wow Launched you COULD NOT!!!!!!!!!!!! download the client for free and only pay the sub fee... You had to buy the box first. Then they released there trial a year or so later , at first it made you have cd key from a box to make an account to play on there offical servers.. Now there allowing you to use the trial account client and upgrade to a full account by paying the monthly fee only...
And This happend just becasue they dont need the money from the box sales anymore. |

Simple answer; you're off yer bloomin' rocker mate .. go log into the account and click a link on the right-hand side that says "Full Payment History" .. now look at all those "One-Month Subscription" (or in my case "Six-Month Subscription") .. 'cos if you hadn't been paying your subscription, then you wouldn't be able to log into the game.

This is almost certainly a child who has his acct paid for him. If not, how could natural selection allow this person to make it to adulthood?
At any rate, you purchased the original wow client at some time in the past, then you can download trial versions of the expansions. I'm uessing you don't have a toon past 60, so you still go on believing you have access to an expansion which you do not because the expansion content is not explored until 68. Please stop now. |

They might of gave you the last expansion for free I do not know I do not play WOW anymore, but you would have tied to that account you are logging into the CD keys for WOW and then the burning crusade. So what people are trying to get you to understand is that yes you downloaded the game for free on this PC that you never played WOW on before. But the account you are logging into when the blizzard window opens, if it is the one that you having been playing on for years, then you have made box purchases before since those CD keys are tied to that login. Unless you stopped logging into the account you have been playing for years and started a brand new account with brand new characters and gave up your old characters. So which one is it? Are you logging into the account you have been playing for years or a brand new one? If it is your old account you really need to think about how you word things, because you do not give a realistic idea to what you are talking about. |

Many of the games I have played you can download for free. When I got my new PC all I did for several of them was go to the game website and look around a bit and then downloaded them. That does not mean I am playing for free though as I still need to pay the monthly sub fee and such. But a lot of companies give out the client on the games sites, as far as I have seen. That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming! |

Taken from http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&articleId=20564&parentCategoryId&pageNumber=1&categoryId=2328 What is a direct online upgrade? Online upgrades provides a means to purchase and upgrade World of Warcraft accounts without going to the retailer to purchase a box copy.
Most trial restrictions will be removed immediately after payment information is entered for an upgrade, but some restrictions (such as certain in-game chat privileges) will remain in place until payment verification is fully complete. This may take up to 72 hours.
Go to the Direct Online Upgrade page, which is located in the Account Management section of the official World of Warcraft community website. You will be asked to log in using your World of Warcraft login information if you have not already. Once on the upgrade page, you will be asked to enter your credit card information; enter that, and click the "Submit" button. Then, follow the link to download the appropriate game client. Once you've downloaded and installed the client, you're ready to go.
• You must have a trial account before you can upgrade to Classic World of Warcraft. • You must have Classic World of Warcraft before you can upgrade to the Burning Crusade. • You must have the Burning Crusade before you can upgrade to Wrath of the Lich King.
Yes. When you click the "Submit" button, your credit card will be billed with the noted activation fee (depending on the product), which will upgrade you to the selected client. Players in select states in the U.S. may be subject to taxation when upgrading their account from a classic standard version using the Online Upgrade feature. If I upgrade to the expansion through the direct online upgrade, will I be able to reinstall without discs?

Peronally, I enjoy the use of stylized graphics over the ultra-realism movement. Too often when developers attempt more realism and large amounts of detail something ends up feeling lost to me. Like in Gears of War. The first one. I get it. It's a post apolypitic future. There were just some scenes where the dark and grey theme started to feel a little monochromatic. In some cases I had a hard time picking out where the ground was. I shouldn't have to crank up the brightness just to play. Stop crying in my beer. |
