Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood. |
ok i just came across this poll on the mmorpg home page. And i was surprised to see that 20.6% of the people here actually play for 8-16+ hours. Either they just leave there computer on all day and let it sit there selling stuff in some games, or they actually play that long. I find it very sad that people have nothing better in life to do that they play that long.
How many hours per day do you play MMORPGs? less than 1 hour/day

It would be more relevant if it was a percentage of one's free time, since this is something that's a comparable measurement. If I have 4hrs free per day and I spend 3 on MMOs, I spend 75% of my free time. If you have 8hrs free and you spend 4 on MMOs, you spend more hrs but only 50% of your free time. |

From my understanding, a person awake for 72 hours straight is legally insane. Heh, as long as you can pay the bills and fulfill family responsibilities, go crazy. |

Too bad those numbers aren't in numerical order, I voted 4 hours because it looked, based on a quick glance, to be the shortest amount of time. I'd go shorter, personally, but as people have said, it depends on how much free time you have in a day. Lately, I haven't been spending *ANY* time on MMOs and I don't miss them a bit. Even at my "worst" I was only on 2-3 hours a day, actual play-time, I used to sit and idle for a couple of hours while at work but I rarely if ever looked at the game, I just sat there. Anyone who is playing a lot really ought to get a life. Played: UO, EQ, WoW, DDO, SWG, AO, CoH, EvE, TR, AoC, GW, GA, lots more |

uh hu. Many of the people who ridicule gamers of course see nothing wrong with sitting on their fat asses all night watching TV, or spending hours in some bar wasting money on liquer and trying to get a piece of ass from some random skank. If I choose to spend 10 hours in one day playing an MMORPG, at least I'm excersising my mind instead of drooling mindlessly at a television, or driving home drunk with a burning crotch and an empty wallet. I'll take my games any day over a "life" like that, thank you. |

Spending 12 hours is too less time. |

Nothing wrong with spending all day on a game every once and a while but doing it more then an adult normally spends at work seems excessive to me. |

Since I stopped playing a ton of hours I've started making significantly more in my career, gotten engaged and started to look into buying a house. ...Everyone's mileage may vary of course. But when I've got three days off in a row, the kid's at his mom's, and my current wife is at work...you bet your ass I'm gonna play 'till my eyes bleed...hehehe. |

As much as I disagree with some of Wharg0ul's posts, I do have to agree with his viewpoint on gaming as opposed to watching tv or hanging out at a bar getting drunk. I'm married, I have kids, and if I have a few days off, I'm going to log in and game with my wife and kids. Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do. |

My rule of thumb: I can play as long as I want during a day, HOWEVER, if there's stuff I need to do, plans I have made, or plans that come up that seem interesting enough (such as gf calling to hang out), work, family, and soon University, etc., then those are priority over my gaming. I do go to the gym for an hour and a half at night, and nothing meses with that either. I must add that I am going into University for Computer Science with an Honours in Comp. Game Development degree (focus on development of MMOs), so I feel like if I don't play, and get experience in seeing what works with people, and what doesn't, what is possible etc., that I will most likely fail as a game designer.

When you play so much that you neglect your responsiblities and/or start to lose your health (especially eyes which are pretty sensitive). That's too much.

Originally posted by Wharg0ul I used to get a hard time for playing computer games until I pointed this out. I don't watch TV. It's crap. NCIS, LA Law, Star Trek Legal (Where the hell is Spock anyway?), CSI, CSI:NY, CSI:Miami, Law and Order, SVU, House, Grey's Anatomy (false advertising there - I never saw her anatomy even once!). Don't even get me started on "Lost" etc. So you think you can dance?, Idol, Some Country has Talent, Masterchef, Iron Chef, Ramsey's swearathon (Where is the Moderator?), Biggest Loser (Descibes the audience), Dance your arse off, Big Brother, Then the re-runs of Two and a Half Men (This is funny once type humor). Pointed out to people that some of them eat their dinner in front of the TV and start at 5:30-6pm nightly and only finish at 11-11:30pm. At least I choose my own entertainment and don't accept what is 'piped' to me by some TV exec.
I tried playing Real Life but the graphics sucked, the community was annoying too. |
