all in all you know...I think Aion will fail. In the long run. Just like AOC did, just like WAR did - and any other MMO out there that had claimed to be the "kill of wow".

The thing is, i really really cba playing wow anymore, so i'll still have a shot at Aion just like million others will because...why not try something new? Everything (except AOC) deserves a fair try.

For me its just a time killer until Dragon Age (especially after the delay to November) arrives and until Star Wars: The Old Republic arrives.

I wish Aion the best of luck, and pray that it has more than it promises, but long term potential? I doubt it.

Durk.

ps: sorry for the rather pessimistic thread, but aoc taught me not to sell my soul.

WoW: retired hardcore mage (bored)
WAR: retired (not fun)
AOC: retired (fail game is obvious fail game)
Aion: gonna play until Star Wars: TOR arrives

oh god, not one of these again.

You have to "tell" us why. Not just "I think".

For starters, I'll tell you why they are different. AoC had a lot of problems at launch. Besides bugs there was lack of content, sieges didn't work correctly, etc.

Aion has already been out for a year. And will be launching with the 1.5 version which adds even more content. Sieges and abyss work. The game already has a strong following for those who like it. It's launched in china and korea and I believe japan is having or is about to have its beta.

It's polished. It is not an unknown quantity.

so fail? probably not. I don't see the game being huge over here because of the pvp component but I do think it will do very well.

And as a point of note, it's usally the players who make that inane statement about killing wow. I do remember that the warhammer devs did not say they were after beng a wow killer, they just wanted a successful game.

I guess it depends on your definition of fail. Aion is and will do well in Asia and my guess is the US market will not be a huge priority.  Mainly because US PvP players are fickle and will leave any PvP game very fast.  PvP players love to post on forums but for the most part they do not have the patience or maturity to play MMO's longer than a few months.  Without any real PvE endgame its almost impossible for Aion to attract more than a few hundred thousand western players. Consequently Aion while a nice polished game will never make much of a dent in the Western markets but will do very well in Asia.  But I doubt western success was ever part of Aion's business model.  I suspect they would like to do something similar to FF11;  Sell 500k to a million boxes, attract 1-200k long term subs for western players and add to the revenue they make in Asia.

The timing of Aion's release seems very good for the Western market with some big name games coming out in 1-2 years and with many gamers looking for the next new thing to tie themselves over for a year or two.  Many players memories of AoC and Warhammer's releases have faded and are ready to spend $50 again.  They have an opportunity to sell a bunch of boxes.  The problem is keeping those Subs in a game that is almost all PvP post level 25.  People will not play PvP focused endgames without PVE content.  With the one exception being DAOC.  Without a focused progression raiding endgame a few hundred thousand western subs is probably their limit.  While PvP players may dominate message boards they don't  play the games.

But in regards to saying that means Aion will fail I would strongly disagree.  They do not need any western subs to be successful.  Whatever they get in the West is just gravy for them.  I would guess their goal is to hype the game and sell a bunch of boxes, make a lot of front end money, and hope to keep a few subs and a handful of western servers open while their main focus is in Asia.

Aions been out for over 10 months now and seems to be doing fine, I think the game will do well. Just because a bunch of pissed off people who hate Wow say that every game will kill Wow doesn't mean that game instantly fails. If it did then we will never get to have another game. I think we need to be positive and stop over hyping games and enjoy what we get, I personaly can't wait till Aion comes out and I hope I can get the money to pre-order it. :)

It would be nice to have some reasoning in your post as you do not state why it will fail. I personaly will not play Aion because i do not support the medeival/korean style that games rely on these days but it ould be nice to know whats going on in the general mmo stage. So either give arguments or expect flames.

If the current 1.5 patch that is on test servers in korea goes live i cancel my preorder at least. One less customer :P tho they got like trillions more who order preorder.

Reason i'll cancel is that the put in the best pvp gear and weapons in an instance doesnt matter its an pvpve instance. I hate instanced pvp (got fed up after 1 year of arena), for me it show's (they might still change tho) that they are leaning towards adding more instanced pvp. Since i allways try (allways succeded so far) to get the best pvp gear (if its a geardependent game) to be on par with the other's.

*hold's thumbs MO will be allright* until then eve got my attention abit longer :)

I don't even have a worry about US PvPers staying with the game. It may not be palatable for those who actually are masochistic enough to enjoy WoW PvP, but those of us who loved the DAoC PvP are in for a treat.

"all in all you know...I think Aion will fail. In the long run. Just like AOC did, just like WAR did - and any other MMO out there that had claimed to be the "kill of wow"."

It's not MMOs who claim to be "WoW killas". It's the players. AoC and WAR devs have never claimed they were going to kill WoW. That brings me to another point:

"For me its just a time killer until Dragon Age (especially after the delay to November) arrives and until Star Wars: The Old Republic arrives."

There are quite a lot of players claiming that SW:TOR is the only MMO capable of "killing WoW". So this game you're waiting for is the same, just like both the hyped up games you're talking about.

"ps: sorry for the rather pessimistic thread, but aoc taught me not to sell my soul."

This is good, but since Aion is your "time-killer" until DA and TOR arrive, it seems to me your soul is already sold to both these games.

Do you have any actual rational reasons or just because you where disappointed with AoC and learned not to sell your soul BUT you can't wait for Dragon Age and Star Wars....

(Isn't that a bit contradictory?)

I also don't recall any of those games claiming to be WoW killers. I do however recall reading in the most recent PCGamer, the new SW game guys joking about how they might be the WoW killer....

Nothing wrong with be pessimistic but at least make sense.

Sounds like the OP is setting himself up for a disappointment. Can always eliminate the middle man and just go buy a bag of crack instead. Atleast you know you'll enjoy it and it'll last much shorter so you don't have to put up with the "torture" of a game that didn't kill wow therefore failing.

Wait...

They didn't claim to be able to kill wow, or intend to... wtf are you talking about again?

didnt intend the thread to sound that negative, actually wanted it to be more realistic, then a "flame" of Aion.

truth is, i havent played it yet so i cant really flame it...ive got beta access next weekend tho so ill have a shot at it to see what its like.

But I hope Aion will succeed - theres a difference between "hoping" and what it actually will be.

and yes...players are they hypers, but the players are what makes the game.

WoW: retired hardcore mage (bored)
WAR: retired (not fun)
AOC: retired (fail game is obvious fail game)
Aion: gonna play until Star Wars: TOR arrives

If you thought AOC was gonna succeed with what they said... i dunno what to tell you @@.

Also , statistically speaking, it is very easy to say an MMO will fail.

Star Wars mmo will fail also. Look how easy it is?

It's no surprise that games have a drop off within a few months or even in the worst game cases, weeks. It happened with UO, it will happen with Aion. I personally believe it has better sustainability in numbers, but the hype will be off for folks who can't pvp the way they want, or craft or whatever.

As far as a Wo_ (censored) kill, that seems to be more a vernacular word to say than a possibility. Interestingly, I don't see near the talk in Aion forums that I did with many of the mmo's of the past, and recent past.

I agree with the timekiller comment. Many, many players have a game on the horizon they are just waiting for. Mine is Star Trek Online.

Sigh all you noobs need to stop saying Aion is a WoW killer and all that bull. Aion is not coming out to kill WoW they are just bringing us a great korean game thats popular in the asian market for us americans to enjoy and play.

I am really sick of americans talking down on asian games despite what you believe there are actually a good bit of us who love korean games, style and art work so go back to your nerfed wow and stay out of the Aion talk.

By the way Aion will not fail there is to many positive things going for it to fail for a long time its not the F2P garbage you see most of the time. Everytime a good game comes out the wow nerds come out the shadows saying O its a wow clone its gonna fail just except the fact that WoW will one day get played out and become old and people will move on to something more mature and modern looking.

Topics like this should be banned... there's no place for them (yes yes, voice of opinion - I got it)

Seriously... why even make posts like this?

Sooo many people are enjoying Aion and loving it... nothing will be a "WoW killer" but that certainly doesn't mean that this game will fail....

edit: Before I get crapped on for saying nothing will kill WoW - what I mean is, no one game is going to take 9 million subs from Blizzard over night... its just not feasible. That said - I know a TON of ex-WoW players who will be leaving for Aion when it comes out.

All I have to say is american gamers as a whole need to be more greatful to the asian race for sending us alot of there great games I can name a truck load of asian games that are succesful over here.

They are nice for sending there work over here for us to enjoy and play they don't owe us anything so show a little more respect for there work thats all I want to say on this topic.
