Ok, so a few weeks ago I pre ordered Aion to play some of the beta. I played for a few hours and determined that I hated the game, and stopped. Now today, out of boredom, I relogged into the closed beta and for some reason this time it really clicked with me. The graphics are great, now with more localizations, its fun to get into the somewhat simple beginning quest-line. I rolled a mage and switched to Sorcerer at level 10 and I am really looking forward to the release of this game.

I know the major gripes against this game because up until today I myself was against this game, but as players of this genre, I think we have forgotten what it is we like about mmorpgs. The first time I played this game I clicked through all of the quests and skipped all of the cutscenes. I ran past all of the areas to where I needed to kill mobs. I didnt talk or group with anybody around me, and because of all those things, I really hated the game.

Today, after really deciding to give this game a chance for the day, I had a great time. I grouped up with some people level 5-11 (when i stopped) and we talked and tried to figure out the ins and outs of the game. The animations in this game are just awesome. I really enjoyed the way my character looked. The mini story line is actually interesting enough, nothing too crazy, but its the beginning of the game.

I only ever thought about stopping because I didnt want to spoil the game for release, and I am surprised to say I would gladly start over in this game once it comes out. I learned alot of the quest areas and little tricks. Hint, do your job advance AS SOON as you hit level 9, it automatically dings you level 10, I made the mistake of finishing the story quests first, and after turning them in I wasted alot of exp because it caps you at 99.99% until u job advance and the extra exp was wasted.

So overall I got through much of the game that the people against it hated. And I enjoyed it. At level 10 I went to the first major city and saw on my map Coliseum. So I ventured over to that area and zoned in for my first PvP fight in Aion. As I was exploring the scenery of the coliseum, a level 10 warrior zoned in behind me and charged me, then beat me down to about half hp. I put up my shield and used my new sleep spell on him, ran away a bit, and started to nuke him. I got him low, and he charged me again and broke my shield. I knew I couldnt sleep him again because I had put a dot on him to try and kill him, and at about 10% hp, I remembered I had one last trick. I spread my wings and took off from the ground out of the warriors reach and shot my last nukes on him for the kill before he was able to take off after me. I realized this is the "aerial combat" that everyone was talking about. Its actually a very unique mechanic that isnt handled similarly in any other game. You cant fly forever, so you need to use your take off and flight time very wisely to win fights, and I absolutely loved it. I hung out in the Coliseum for another hour, slowly more and more people started watching and fighting, and it was the most fun i have had in an mmorpg in a while. It is set up just like a coliseum in Gladiator, where people can safely watch on the sidelines, or jump in and fight for themselves.

And I was surprised to find that the classes were nicely balance, even at level 10. If a melee is getting kited, they can take off from the ground and glide over to you, and because it takes a second to take off, you wont be able to get away if they take off and go in for a slow or a stun. But if I timed my knockback for when they took off, I could give myself time to take off myself. Basically, I never felt overpowered or underpowered. And I won about 50% of the fights.

I dont really know why im writing this, maybe you guys could give Aion an honest try one day next weekend or when it comes out and find that you really like it, and that you just arent trying to have fun playing mmorpgs anymore. Nothing is going to be fun if you arent willing to let yourself have fun. I think this applies to alot of mmorpgs out there, not just Aion.

Cheers ;o)

Nice to hear :).

Reminds me of the first time I played Anarchy Online. I got really frustrated with the newbie zone, I hated the combat and everything else felt horrible. I probably quit in like 10 minutes.

Came back to the game like a week later out of boredom and loved it, and ended up playing for like 6 months. Sometimes all it takes is just a second fresh look and a new class or something.

Its so much fun to watch the little ones grow up!

You learned a valuable lesson today my son.  Take your time and enjoy life.   Many times things are more than they seem at first glance.

Oh and remove the word "BORED" from your vocabulary.  All it means is you are too lazy to use your brain!

Cheers!

That is why you shouldn't judge a game before its finished.  Hell its not even out yet and people are making their assumptions about it lol.

That's the process i had with many free games, but i didn't tried again, but i don't regret.

To avoid misjudging a game, I learned not to play the betas. Maybe it's bad luck or maybe I can destroy the future of a game, i tried before, the beta of Tabula Rasa, the beta of Pirates of the Burning Sea, and the beta of Age of Conan, these games have something in common, they born as crap, and two of them died soon, i think i shouldn't play Aion, i can destroy every hope you have put in it

thanks guys lol.  I tried Champions Online and I really didnt like the setup.  Cheers to them for doing something unique, but the episode/room base really didnt make me happy.  I like open worlds with places to explore and huge cities full of player and stuff ;o)

I just wanted to post this to counter some of the hate and stuff on this forum about the game, I read these forums myself and it did kind of ruin my fun the first time to hear so much crap about the game so early on.  I hope everyone finds a game they like, Aion or not.

All of the negativity is normal for an MMO. I mean, there is never going to be an MMO in existence that won't have such a split community. A lot of people seem to think that every MMO should be made tailored to their expectations, and when it isn't they moan. A lot of the complaint threads seem to be asking something from Aion which it clearly isn't, like lamenting the lack of RP options or the standard quests, or the emphasis on PvP.

Of course it's the worst on these forums because a large majority of posters seem to just be bored of all MMOs, so they go here to post.

I agree with you.  Everyone wants to make their own versions of MMOs.  They all think their idea MMO is better than WOW and any other!  Plus who the hell wants to fork out that much money for more than a few MMOs.

Aion is an MMO.  And I think a darn good one.  If you are bored of MMOs play something else.  Get real! Look into LucasArts Star Wars The Old Republic.  Not only did it win best PC game this year at E3 2009 but it also states there is no grinding.  Last game like that was City Of Heroes which won best Multiplayer game at E3 a few years back.  That may be your cup of tea.  The graphics look good there also.

Wipe them out...ALL of them.

8/02/09 9:23:25 PM#14

Well  a couple of things I've done that you haven't is read ALL of the quests and done ALL of the quests before ascending.  It's not a waste of time as you still earn items/money even if your xp capped!

One thing too though, the final cutscene with the big battle your in with the other big guy has some VERY annoying voice overs.  They need to localize that better or just get rid of the screams and grunts.  It's enough to make your ears bleed!

First to the OP, I say congrats on enjoying your own experiance.

Perhaps I even may enjoy the game more if I did all those little things like you did as well. I guess i'm just more hungry to see what is in store for end game pvp.

I'm still enjoying the game I just find leveling by myself to cap level is sort of dull, as in any mmo. Feel free to look at my post about soloing in mmos if you like to know what im refering to.

I think there's also a lesson to be learned here as well. Things aren 't just skin deep and jumping to conclusions about something before you give it  a real chance won't get you anwhere.

though cooked peas and carrots are still gross.

Aion is fine with one user modification:  mute the sound.  It's preposterously bad.  Maybe it's a culture thing, but it makes me want to rip my hair out.  Partly it's a lack of proportion, like a song that starts big and loud and never goes anywhere.  Perhaps that can be fixed over time with patches, but seems unlikely that they would actually replace low level sounds in order to give a sense of progression.  Like I said, I can't tell if it's lack of attention to this area, bad design, or cultural expectations, but I could never play this game as is with the sound on.

"Money can't buy happiness" is a lie.
Money can buy you a pool and some Prozac.

So much positivity in this thread...

I'm waiting for the rain on this parade to show up any minute :D

I'm glad you decided to neglect everything you read on the forums and came up with your own view about the game. Negative, positive, it doesn't matter, they're all opinions. It's only bad when either side tries to shove it down the others' throats.
