I've grown tired of fantasy games like World of Warcraft, AoC, and Warhammer.

They're all simplistic and just aren't that much fun at the end of the day.

The game i'm looking forward to the most right now is Earthrise but that's at least 6 months away.

I like the occasional pve but I'm a fan of getting together with a few people and pvping. If I have to PVE, I like doing things like dungeon running like in Lost Dungeons of Norrath in Everquest.

This game has me interested because it seems like it's different but will this game be for me?

After the disasterous year that 2008 was with MMORPGS, I have a hard time buying a new game on release.

Earthrise is certainly one to watch. Watch the Champions Online videos on YouTube. Read about its features. Decide if you would like to play that type of game. Have you ever played the City of Heroes/Villains games? If you didn't feel it for the super power types, you won't like Champions, because at its core, it's a Superhero game.

There are some cool innovations in Champions and if done right, could really make it stand out. However, they could just be gimmicky and end up being moot to the MMO formula. Time will tell.

i played coh and had a lot of fun playing with my character and i have been following this game a little

the problem i have is following a game too closely and having it be a huge let down (AoC, WAR, Tabula Rasa, Hellgate London, etc)

i find it much more useful to actually talk to people and see what they think

i don't mind being a super hero

i just wonder what they'll offer in the way of character customization since there was no loot in CoH

"...following a game too closely..."

99.9% of the time if you follow a game from start to finish, it will almost always fail to live to expectations. Never follow games too closely unless you are prepared for major disapointments.

The game is going to be more a PvE experience.. There is the arena (and eventually the possibility to play as your nemesis) but I'm pretty sure it's not going to be the main focus.

The major points of CO are the combat system that feels more like an action game and the character creation which gives even more possibilities than CoX ...

Since the NDA hasn't been lifted yet, I'd wait maybe a week or two. You should be able to get a better idea with the open beta. It's scheduled for august 14th.

RR,

My worst vice is advice and here it is again, free of charge.

I would suggest playing some betas if you can get in, if not the let the game go into what I call the "ginuea pig" phase. Let it release, then start talking to people that love the game and hate the game. Not the overall message of the status quo, becuase you'll hear alot of bandwagon jumpers that dilute the truth or just want to bark. If the game you are watching offers a trial run, do it. That has saved me alot of money in the past. There are a few euro sites that are giving away CO keys.

Also, play a game like it. Wondering about CO, play City of X/X for the superhero experience; they are offering a trial period. If you like it, then give CO a shot, if you don't, like I did then walk away.  I pulled my reserve from both CO and Aion this week. Why? Because I have found a game that I liked, played both betas and I'm sticking with my current game. I'm not unhappy and I'm not one that needs the new,new thing becuase it's new.

I hope this helps.

Play safe,

Ink

Currently I am playing EVE and getting back into Fallout 3 for the new DLC headed this week. I wrote a blog about why I dumped CO and Aion, that should explain it all.

LOL...totally uncredible...not incredible...

You havent even played CO so what says you have the ability to properly write something on it.  I somewhat agree with you on Aion, although I think you should have added that the game really doesnt do a great job of selling it's combat system in the first 15 levels(that's how far I got)....I did get bored quick with it especially since it took the same time to kill one mob in Aion as it would to kill five mobs in any other game..

Not going to play a game because you didn't get into closed beta?  Sounds more like a child throwing a temper tantrum.

Open beta starts in 2 weeks, a $5 preorder at gamestop or a fileplanet account would get you in.

I cannot say if it a game for you but what I can tell you is that after one day in the Closed Beta I am totally hooked.  As I said in another post more then anything else CO is the game you make it to be.  Nothing stops you from making an effective but very borring character but at the same time nothing stops you from making something that plays the way you want it to/most enjoy.

I like a lot of movement with a mix of ranged and melee attacks.  CO allows me to make that character and gives me a lot of options while doing so.  I prioritize defense over offense but I do not want to hit like a wet noodle or be relegated to the tanking role; CO allows me to find the balance there I am comfortable with.

I care a lot about how my character looks and having animations that I like.  CO lets me choose my characters costume and allows me to mix and match from hundreds of powers all with unique animations to find the combinations I like.

Having said all of that no game is for everyone.  If I were you I'd try to get into the Open Beta (when it starts) and see for youeself.

Hows performance so far?  Is it another laggy glitch fest or does it run smoothly?

Well I just build myself a new machine last month with an i7 920, gtx 275, and 6GB ram with some overclocking and it runs like a dream so far.   I cannot speak to the performance on lower spec systems, so I do not know how helpful that is to you.

I've encountered some bugs (mostly with menu displays) but nothing that has happered playing the game or my enjoyment in any way.

well is the game polished? does it have a lot of content to keep people interested? is it stable?

how does it compare to games like AoC and WAR when they were released?

The game so far runs beautifully on my new system but it is an overclocked i7 920 with an gx 275 and 6 Gig RAM.  I only bring that up because I have no personal experiance with how well it runs on more average systems.

I was not in either the AoC or WAR beta so it is hard for me to compare them at this stage in there develpoment.  I can tell you the bugs I have run into so far have not been major.

I have not been in the beta long enough to see the mid and end game content but what I have played through has impressed me.  Then again AoC was nice for about 20 levels so there is always that danger.   I played WAR for maybe an hour before canceling my subscription and uninstalling so I'd have say it CO already beats WAR for me!

I don't want anyone think CO is or will be perfect by launch.  It will have the same balancing issues every MMO has (even after they have been out for years) and I'm sure bugs and glitches will make it through the beta.  And I am sure there are some people who will not like the style of the game.  As I said before if you want a game that follows the tank/dsp/support model of WoW or hands you a bunch of pre-defined playstyles CO is likely not for you.

Some people feel all characters feel and play the same regardless of the powers they pick.  Personally I feel that the three characters I have made have very different playstyles even when they were at level one.  Again I think it comes down to how deaply you are willing to dig into the system.  The character creation system in CO is fundementally a toolbox.  It does not force you to do anything other then take two attacks at level one.  So you can make an very borring character that does nothing but hit 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, 1, 2 if you like.

But there is nothing making you to do that. I have a character I love who almost never stops moving and dances between melee and ranged.  I plan to give her some knockback/up abilities because I think sending enemies flying is awsome and never gets old.  She can pistol whip you, kick you in the teath, and then do a series of backwards summersaults, a backflip and come up shooting.  As I level her up I'll add lightning bolts and a force field to her, maybe a fire attack too.  I have no idea if this is the most efficent way to make a character but for the first time in a long while I do not care because I've had fun playing her for every second.  I do cool stuff in combat just because I can; not because I am trying to maximize my exp per second.

I have enjoyed playing CO far more then any MMO I have played.  I think I have to go back to my very first one, Ascheron's Call, to find the same feeling of excitment as I do now about playing.

If you enjoyed CoH then you'll probably enjoy Champions online aswell.
