Ok, obviously there are no to very little details out on FFXIV at the moment, so this is all speculation...

Ok here's the question, how long do you think it will take to reach the "level cap" in FFXIV in comparison to FFXI (and I put level cap in quotes because we don't know how the system will work. so by level cap I mean whatever top tier is you can achieve whether it's based on xp, skill points, AP, or something else).

Now, I never played FFXI long enough to reach cap (played until close to lvl 60) but I know what the leveling pace was like (around NA release). So, people who played through around NA release, how long did it take the average player to reach cap (including doing genkeis) and how long do you think it will take in FFXIV to reach cap? Again, this is speculation since we have no information and I'm creating this thread because the little information we've been given is getting boring to talk about!

If a player dedicates himself to a single job combination, they can get to Lv.75 in less than a month. The reason I only ever got about as far as you did in my 3 or 4 years of on & off play is beacuse I couldn't decide on what I wanted to be. But I had a friend who had her account hacked, went for [THF75/NIN37], and with the help of her linkshell she pretty much 'restored' her old character to an acceptable status in less than a month. In *great* parties I'm guessing you can get to Lv.75 within a couple weeks of hardcore gaming, planning things out ahead of time, and with good help. But even she hit a couple snags along the way.

When I started XI the level cap was already 75, but before that, wasn't it lower? The first limit-break is Lv.50. I'm torn on whether or not I'd want SE to keep this concept. However they do it, I hope they take it slow and make it last.

I don't think this is an even remotly fair question to ask because everyone's play style is different.  Just a quick example, I had a friend that started FFXI with me, he did lots and lots of crafting and stuff, didn't really care about getting to 75 very fast.. he wanted to get there.. just didnt care how long it took.  So anyway, took him about oh.. 14 maybe 15 months to hit 75.  It took me 7 months on my first job.  Again tho, I did alot of other stuff in the game, not just grind, I like to enjoy the fullness of games.  Umm.. my 2nd job still took awhile because I did alot of end game with my first.. but my 3rd.. yeah, like a month.  I mean, I had the gil to support it.. had static parties, knew what I was doing, and didnt do much besides grind this time around.

So, everyone would probly give ou a completely different story, and there is no difinitive answer, but that was my experience, don't know if it helps ya or not.

Oh crap forgot I wanted to put this in here.. btw just some fun facts or maybe did you know or w/e you wanna call it.. levels 1-60 was equal to the amount of experience needed for levels 60-75.. so in the aspect of experience points.. you were only ever half way to max cap >.>

Yeah I realize it's a very subjective question. I guess what I was going for was taking a comparison of what you thought of as average in FFXI and comparing that to what you think average will be in FFXIV.

Haha I could have lived with getting the second half. It probably took me a few months to get to close to 60 on thief and close to 55 on ranger although I had already played the game before up to lvl 40ish and quit and started over from scratch so I knew what I was doing to a point. Actually what really made me quit the game was the gil it took. At the time I was much less patient and was obsessed with getting the best equipment available for my lvl haha so I got burned out on NM hunting and such.

Leveling theif was a slight advantage, and though I've never leveled ranger myself, I

hear it's one of the most expensive jobs in the game unless you can craft your own projectiles. So you kinda screwed yourself a little bit there. =P

FFXIV

Character Levelling and Jobs

The developers have attributed the long-term success of FF11 to its job system and plan to expand this significantly in FF14. The aim is to end up with something completely different but yet achieve the same effect of maintaining lasting appeal to the players.

Instead of leveling via experience, weapons will play a key role. The developers promised there will be no more need to grind XP for levels and they have something new in store.

For more detailed information, visit the dedicated Levelling System and Job System page

Since there is not going to be a "level cap", there isn't any timeframe for that. They said it's going to be based on weapon leveling as opposed to mob leveling (ala LOTRO's weapons more than likely)

In LOTRO, you found weapons that were upgradable with slots that gave you more attributes, more power, mana, health etc. I forget the actualy range but each weapon you found had a random number of base stats and as you used each weapon it "leveled" up. Once it did that, you could put higher slotted items in and take out the weaker ones. So it really depended on how many mobs you killed or how much you used it in battle. (I don't think they leveled in Monster Play (pvp) but I don't know for sure)

Just to give you an idea of the weapon system I was talking about.

Each one had tiers but also had base stats.

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this.

I have faith in SE that whatever they do it will be good.

As for the leveling system. whether its wepon driven, or xp or whatever. I hope they keep the longer leveling time. I dont' like it in WoW how you can cap a crafting system and your char. in just 2 months..... its to fast and to easy.

on my first character it took me about 6-7 months to get to 75 for the first time, and when i deleted him trying to quit and came back....it took about a month. Its very true its all very dependent on how much and what you do will show how long it takes.

i personaly think it will be slightly faster then FFXI for the fact they are aiming at a more casual auidence and have much more balance in solo and group play. We can only just speculate day in day out until new info pops up..wich i expect the latest to be @ TGS in september. I know they are supposed to have it at GameCon next month but i dont think they will show much if at all (rehash the trailer or mabey add a bit more if anything...though who knows)

Think? I have no clue. What I hope is that it will take around at least 300 hours of gameplay to reach cap. ( This isnt including farming or w/e else you do besides leveling. My philosophy the longer the better.

As for FFXI I think it took me around 6 months to hit cap(no idea on actual gameplay hours). But I wasnt in a hurry to get there. I was enjoying the game.

Yeah, it was pretty expensive. I actually leveled up thief for the specific purpose of making money (for TH2 although I continued past that). And I eventually tried leveling some crafts for making projectiles but I tried to do it to fast and wasted a lot of money haha oh well! Ranger was fun though, especially before the patch that changed how ranged damage worked. They did some pretty absurd amounts of damage so I can see why they adjusted it.

But yeah, good answers since it was a bit of an off-the-wall questions. Personally I think they may make the gameplay required to reach max whatever slightly less but I'm not expecting it to change drastically from FFXI.
