Lucas owns it, it's his baby and he can do what he wants with it.

He's still got a lot of money left to make.

I agree. Lucas is visionary and very intelligent guy. A person who creates something like Star Wars deserve respect. The new generation is ungrateful and impatient.

Lucas reminds me of Gene Rodenberry. Someone who had a great idea, but was only good when others picked up the ball and ran with it.

MMOs played:SWG,NGE,Warhammer, World of Warcraft, Star Trek Online,Eve, Star Wars the Old Republic.
Favorite MMO: Star Wars the Old Republic
Least Favorite MMO: NGE

Anyone who knows anything about movie history or even literature history can plainly see the idea itself was pretty obvious and straightforward. The key to the success of Star Wars was its execution.

The movie brats (Spielberg, Coppola, Lucas et al) were not about new or good ideas. They were all about taking traditional genres and conventions and making them look majestic and thrilling again.

So you have not seen the cartoon movie or tv series yet call it lame? I have to admit I did not have high hopes for it but the movie was enjoyable and I always seemed to eat at CiCis(which plays cartoon network) whenever it was on and found it was good too. This is his IP, I do not want to see all of the other stories turned into movies. Leave it at the 6, it is only diloutting the IP more to make more movies. Do you know anything about where the James Bond movies come from? Most of them were books written by one person. There are enough books that its pretty easy to write new stories for Bond. Lucas did 1-6 and thats all, every thing else is just second hand stuff not wirrten by the creator of the franchise.

Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

If the Powerball lottery was like Lotro, nobody would win for 2 years, and then everyone in Nebraska would win on the same day.
And then Nebraska would get nerfed.-pinkwood lotro fourms

The new cartoon series does what it is meant to do.  Kids love it and are getting their parents to buy lots of toys.  My nephew seemed very shocked when he found out Anakin became Darth Vader.  The cartoon series has replaced his Power Ranger obsession with a Star Wars obsession.

You can't kill the guy for having an opinion and also you have to open your mind a bit on this topic if you are a Star Wars fan.  Fans who love Star Wars don't want to wake up one day and George Lucas announced he's making a new Star Wars movie where all the main actors are unicorns with glowing light-saber horns

Fans who love Star Wars appreciate the role Lucas played and while true we could just not buy his product if we feel it has move on to another level we don't like; the greater gripe is that fans (die-hard fans) don't want the Star Wars Universe to get watered down into something like what the Star Trek line of movies the Next Generation crew turned into.  While still good, they kind of didn't fit into the overall story line of the Star Trek world (I'm mainly talking about the ST: Nemesis).

Im not that kind of fan of anything. George Lucas is clearly a very succesfull businessman. But then some MMO player comes along who thinks he should retire because some of the ip doesnt turn out the way he likes. Its one thing to just dont like what it turns out to be, but its arrogant to think that George Lucas should retire because of that.

Its their ip, not yours. And its a business if you like it or not. You either like their ip or you dont.

I really think that so called 'fans' who think they have a say in someone elses business retarded. Like all that preNGE crap for SWG. Its just mental.

The Star Wars franchise has only generated 21 billion dollars in lifetime revenue. Lucas should quit right now because he obviously has no clue how to market a product.

If you're going to stick it out there, don't be afraid if you get it cut off.

First of all I would like to state that I really enjoyed Star Wars 1,2, and 3.  Furthermore, I have really enjoyed a lot of material that Lucas is responsible for, however, I have also been disappointed with some.  For example, I am not a fan of the cartoon.  Unfortunatly this game seems to be using the same art.  I was hoping for a TV series of Hans Solo, as was an orginal idea discussed before they decided to go the anime route.

Should he retire?  Well, I suppose that as time goes on he should be slowly spreading his power and resources to people that can carry on the Star Wars name.  I don't want to see Star Wars die with his creative mind deteriorating.  Hopefully he can bury his pride and handoff his brilliant idea.

Not good choice answers. lucas should retire from making movies, but not from making sure novels, comic books, video games etc stay canon. E for effort.

Not the best choice answers yet but I am speaking about everything they do with the IP not just the movies he doesn't write any of those novels comics etc. which is exactly why I made the post in the first place,  everyone he allows to work with the IP has done better with it than he has since the first 3 films.

Agreed. The IP belongs to Lucas, so it's his call. But when he kicks the bucket SOMEONE will own the IP and they will more than likely license it to make more money.

I think we'll see more cool Star Wars stuff appear when that happens than we've seen in the last 10 years.

I doubt it will be movies though. I bet the IP will be controlled just as heavily as LOTR is.(well maybe not as much as that) I see no reason why he won't make sure through a will that his IP is handled how he wants.

Of course he can leave his IP to whomever he wants in a will, but then those people can just sell it to the highest bidder if they want to.

...again, it's just an opinion, nobody is telling George to retire, just throwing out his opinion on the matter.

For example, I think ninja's > pirate's, but you might think pirate's > ninja's.  Get it?  It's just an opinion, no matter who is really better because its an abstract argument with no facts to support the original opinion.

I am not so sure, afterr seeing the horrible job Bioware has done trying to bring this game to life,i would rather a whole different developer maybe using MORE LUCAS input would do the game justice.Bioware IMO maybe doing an average job with voice overs, but the rest of the game looks worse than the original SW movie i watched at a drive in many years ago like 20 or so.

Was not Bioware the game that did Mas Effect?if so why hav ethey done such a weak job with this game? Not that Mass effect is a good game but at least it looks a heck of a lot better.

What is even more baffling is that their much older Baldurs gate and NWN all look much better than this game ,it is totally puzzling. You have seperate people for each job ,so they should have people making textures, people that work on the models, their tech should incorporate the shading/shadows,i mean it all looks like its made by a high school student,or made to run on a P2 computer or older.

IMO if Lucas has any self respect,he would have been all over these guys for making his baby look so bad,so i feel Lucas has had VERY little input and this games weaknesses are solely to blame on Bioware not Lucas.IMO Lucas is probably used for the story the dialogue, witch will probably be the games only strong point,so RETIRE? nah,i think he needs maybe to be given a larger hand at production.

Start worrying about other players in a game and dont just play

8/05/09 7:36:07 AM#35

When he made Episode 1-3 I heard something that he was making them with his doughters in mind. He has just gotten so out of touch with his original concept its laughable.

Also I saw a documentary about the orginal Episodes 4-6 and how they where made, and Lucas had alot of help of some realy talented people his Ex wife for one. And they where not part of the last films. A good thing to keep in mind is a Movie is made by several people, and sadly many of the best people behind the camera  on the first films where not there when He made Episode 1-3.

While I do enjoy the SW IP, after what Lucas did to Indiana Jones I do believe it is time for him to retire. I  just fear what he might do to SW given time oO. I think he went senile, I could be wrong. I think south park actually said it best when they said Lucas and Spielberg raped Indy lol. The SW movies new and old were entertaining but, yeah I think Lucas is way past his prime now days.

Wow, i missed this when I originally responded to this thread.  Actually, the vast majority of what has been done with the IP that isn't related to the films is just awful. The EU novels are some of the worst drek ever printed to the page.  There are exceptions, such as the Zahn novels, which are well written and seem to have at least a basic understanding of the characters from the films.  The majority read like the oceans of fanfiction you can find on the internet for pretty much every IP, pathertic wish fulfilment by a retarded fan.  Sure they have a lot less homosexual sex between characters that have been established as straight, but they are just as poorly written and include asinine ideas that are spawned from the idea that 'I love this character so I'm going to shw that he is better than every other character!'.

The original three films were great (the Ewoks brought the last film down a lot less than many let on), while the prequels were the result of a writer/director/producer that has lost his connection with the ideas and passions that made his earlier films as good as they were.  Lucas isn't the filmaker he used to be, just as his buddy Spielberg isn't anywhere near the filmaker he used to be (Spielberg's decent is more extreme than Lucas').  It comes down to having a group of people who are paid to tell you every asinine idea that sp[wns from your noggin is briliant.

George Lucas isn't really any worse with the Star Wars IP than other owners of major IPs are with theirs.  Warner Brothers don't seem to care what filmakers do with their DC Comics IP, as many of the Warner approved, but luckiy fell through for other reasons, versions of the last Superman movie can attest.  Hell, Superman Returns can attest to the disinterest Warner has in the IP.  Both Marvel and DC comics have committed attrocity afer attrocity with their characters, mainly due to the current crop of writters being fanboys who grew up to write comics for likeminded fanboys.  Comics, which were once aimed at a younger audience, and were meant to allow for new readers to pick them up and be able to follow the narative, have become mangled stories that can't be folowed by a new reader, especially a reader who didn't gro up thinking Spider-Man would be cool if only he was a psycotic wife beater (who msot recently sacrificed his marriage to extend the life of his thousand year old aunt).

The worst thing that happens to popular IPs is that the fans of the IP get old enough to be hired into positions to influence the IP.  BioWare is doing the right thing by staking their game out in an era that isn't constrained by the films, even though an MMO in the era of SWG, one constrained by the films' canon, would be much more enticing, as there is so much that can be done that would appeal to fans of the films, while not involving asinine things like zombies, in that era.
