My first impressions of Aion were not very good. After reading all the hype and excitement over the game, checking out some pvp vids, and knowing about it's development for the last 3-4 years, I decided to pre order the game and couldn't wait to try it out.

I hate to sound so negative but,, personally I don't think it will be very successful in North America. Lineage was and still is very popular in the asian market but didn't do so well over here. I tried it, enjoyed the graphics but hated the gameplay. I lasted about a week.. After trying Aion this weekend, nothing impressed me. For starters, I don't understand the hype, glamour, and just can't see what others supposedly do regarding the graphics. Honestly, Vanguard, LOTRO, and even EQ2 looks better. I have a 8800 GTS Graphics card with a 1440-900 LCD 19 inch monitor in which I cranked the settings all the way up,,, or as high as they can go in Beta. The trees look to cartoonish similar to WoW, bleh! The water looks childlike and not as clear, real, and gorgeous as other games like EQ2, Vanguard, and LOTRO.. The player models look bland, dull, not diverse enough, and everyone looks pretty much exactly the same. The monsters I've seen so far looks as If they should be in pokemon,, very very childish. One thing I do like about Aion is the combat system and cool animations. I love the idea of a fun combo combat system and this is the only reason I haven't uninstalled the game,,,,,, yet... But the combat system alone won't save the game for me. It felt as If I was playing a manga anime, and not a true traditional eXciting MMORPG.

I believe Aion will not be huge in North America. Once true oldschool EQ and DAOC vets check out the game, I'm sure most of them will see what I see and that highly anticipated smile will quickly turn into a upsetting frown. Being an Avid MMO Vet, I most likely won't play Aion this September unless my other half insists I play,, which I hope not.. The next game on my most anticipated list is Mortal Online.. I'll get the chance to test that out on the 3rd of August.. Hopefully I won't be as disappointed with that as I was with Aion.
 

Its already huge in North America and Europe so you are wrong.

Sounds like the art style really wasn't your thing and it really colored your view of the rest of the game.

Isn't it funny how many people WANT it to fail?  Just because it doesn't cater to their particular needs.  They can't just move on and let other people enjoy the game, they have to try and force their dissapointment on others.

Actually it has not released so its success is non-existant. The game is played for 3 days every 2 weeks. It is still in a marketing trial mode in Europe and NA so stating that it is a success right now is a outright lie because there is nothing to gauge its success on.

If you would like, I will provide you with information that reflects that. Its called a release date.

It's okay. He makes it seem like everyone who played came to the forums crying innovation. I've been saying for the last 6+ months, as well as everyone else, there is nothing innovative, just polished. And yet, somehow, they seem to think their impression of the game being innovative is the fanboy's fault for false-hype, and that it wasn't their own bad judgement not to read actual opinions of the game, or any other documentation of the game that clearly states there's no innovative features.

Even on the feature list they have on their websites, I see nothing about them claiming it's innovative. Yet every hater seems to think that's all the Aion community does is claim how innovative the title is. They set themself up to be disappointed if that's the case, no point in trying to debate the point with them.

Not liking the artistic direction is a valid opinion, and if that's the case, there's games that go for a more realistic, or overall higher quality graphical experience than Aion. Go play them. But I guarantee you none of them can have the amount of players onscreen participating in RVR and maintain the framerate that Aion can.

The main complaint I hear about heavy PVP influenced games, the most recent ones, are performance. AOC, WAR, all of them had major performance flaws. Yet you never hear any praise about how well Aion actually performs in those massive situations that brought everyone else and their machines completely to their knees.

People just find it common, yet very addictive and fun.

And it seems you just didn't like the art style, I can't see how character models in Aion can be so dull and the scenery so crappy when compared to other MMOs in DX9. And don't try to compare MMO graphics with FPS graphics, they are not yet at the same level.

Just be honest and say you hate games because they come from Asian developers, that would make things clear. No problem there, many people say "I hate this game because it is Asian", there are just some people that come with weak arguments like the classic and overused "WoW clone" that seems to be used in every non-sandbox MMO released since WoW hit the few millions subs mark.

This will be the most polished MMO release in the last few years, with the betas they have many chances to fix westernization issues (no, not talking about making everything easy) and know how many servers they will need.

Beta proves NOTHING. Look at the numbers released by Age of Conan and Warhammer about how many signed up for beta and how many wanted in beta. The numbers in beta are nothing and do not relate to success in any fashion at all.

And no, I know Aion is not revolutionary. I am being sarcastic because that is the one thing that I can say sarcastically and 99% of the readers get. Anyone claiming Aion is revolutionary is an idiot. Simple as that.

I have said it before...I do not want Aion to fail. I want another game to succeed well and soon because the whole MMO market is stagnant and it needs a huge success to bring some emphasis back to MMO's. WOW has been the 500 gorilla in the room for too long and as a result, innovation has been thrown out the window and stagnation (in terms of game design and creation) is the way of the world right now.

The WORST thing that can happen is that Aion is another repeat of AOC and WAR. It comes out to massive hype (which it has), attracts a huge number at launch (which it will) and then 3-5 months later, the numbers vanish and we have yet another weak entry in the MMO market. This will be horrible for MMO's in general and I do not want to see it.

Of course people will call me a troll and tell me I want Aion to fail because I think it will (and I have my reasons). But it is the last thing I want to happen.

However, to come here and state that it is a success in regions where it hasn't even released yet, is questionable.

EDIT: And let me add, the genre right now is crying for innovation, not me.

No offense but the things you are describing, the childish monsters and the things of that nature.  Well normally in the begining of games the monsters do look childish.

Lets compare it to WoW since everyone does, I'll roll a blood elf.  Oh look its a freakin neon orange tiger that looks like it belongs in a calvin and hobbes cartoon...   IMAGINE THAT!

You don't like Aion because you don't like the art style, thats fine, just don't try to justify your hatred based off a million other little things, its clear to everyone you just don't enjoy the art style.

Which would have made your origional post really short though...

The genre is just happy how it is, otherwise there wouldn't be so many mindless idiots playing WoW.  It is the players fed up with WoW who are calling for innovation... unfortunately, we're in the minority.

Exactly. I still play WOW because its the only game out right now that is even remotely fun to me. In other words, my 4th year in WOW is more fun than the so-called new games like AOC and WAR.

That does not mean that I am content with WOW and I would like something new to come along and make Blizzard get back on their game.

People are criticizing SW:TOR right now for everything but at least they ARE thinking of new stuff and going to give it a try. Who knows how it will turn out, but I will reward them with my money for at least being WILLING to try something.

And I honestly think it will be Aion's lack of innovation that will cause people to play it. For many, it will be the same ole, same ole and for them, it won't be as good or as fun as their old "same ole"....if that makes sense.
