I have played all the big name games, but none took more of my time than FFXI. One of the best things in the game was the sub-job system, and the ability to have one toon with many jobs. Will FFXIV have the same type of system.

I don't think it'll be the same, but there will be some kind of a "job" system.

Personally, I think if SE was smart they'd keep the job system from FFXI... Its what most fans expect and it's a fresh breath from all other MMOs its one of the very awesome things that set FFXI apart from the rest of the MMOs past and present.

Simply put 1 job, 1 character is boring and played out.

Multi-jobs and Sub-jobs was new and innovative and unique to the genre.

Despite what they do I think they need to keep sub-jobs for versatility in character classes.

I also hope they dont do a skill based advancement system, as they never work. Skill based systems with the exception of an advancement model I designed (which the MMO I was working for lacked the insight to use) they are prey to bots and exploits.  Level systems are also boring and tedious. So its good news SE is deciding to veer away from levels.

Granted I'm sure whatever they do with their charaqcter class and adv systems they will do a good job, SE usually does. thier weak point often seems to be viability of select classes and game balance management, such as in the earlier days of FFXI.

I think they should keep the job system. I would like to see something added, like the Materia system from FFVII or even the Sphere Junction system from FFX, as a way to introduce more variety between players characters.

Whatever they do will be amazing, but hopefully they can pull off Amazing a-la FF7 /FF9/FF12 scale

Sub jobs and extensive growth would be awesome. I wonder if our characters will age.

From what i have heard it is going to be skill based lvling no exp at all, so i wonder if you can be all jobs at once have specialties in certain areas and say have warrior skill maxed out then go to another class and start lvling its skills with the wariror skills still usable. at that having the stat boosts from maxing out warrior like strength boost.

What you have heard is all rumors with no real backing, unless I missed some major announcement.

"Although Final Fantasy XIV will eschew the traditional leveling system in favor of something new, there will be parts of the Job System that make it over. Most importantly, they wish to retain the concept of being able to switch roles and work on one job one time and another job the next time. At this time, the developers are unable to give any specifics."

I lOVED the Job system in FFXI as well. I really hope they keep the Sub-Job system too. Honestly I would most likely still be playing FFXI if the server pops were as high as they were about 4.5years ago. Cant wait to sink my teeth into FFXIV

FFXI's Job system has ruined a lot of other MMOs for me. I refuse to play alts... I hope they keep the system in XIV :)

I agree

Thats one reason I hate quest driven MMO's. It limits you because you cant get good unlimited exp.

Yes! The ability to switch classes when you got bored of a class/wanted to try something new/revisit the lower levels and not have to make a whole new character  was one of the best, and imo still is one of the best things FFXI has. and the sub-job ability just added icing to the cake mmm! lol I think most of FFXI alts were more used as mules than a NEW toon. Granted some races were better at certain classes than others so you mite feel the urge to make an alt.....Galka WM anyone {grins}? Not to mention you did not just GET the extra jobs you had to do some quests and earn them, witch IMO was a great amount of fun in and of it self, I aspecially loved the dragoon quests :).

While I DO want them to have the Sub jobs. I Dont want the Stupid (Your the Wrong Sub job Crap) cut out. If i wana be a Whm Ninja thats my choice.

If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Your right that is your choice. Just like its other peoples choice to not invite you to a PT.

haha burn.

I have to agree with toddze on this one. And I think it's a little silly to expect every combination to work out optimally and that you should be just as viable in a group with any job combination. Of course certain combos will be better and be more accepted by the community. Again, it's just as much there choice to not group with you as it is your choice to make some ridiculous job combination. It's nothing against you man, I'm just sick of hearing "I want to be able to play any job combination in XIV and have it be just as good as everything else". lol boring and unrealistic!!

Anyone who is knowledgeable and proficient with their skills can make any combination work for them. And I know most players aren't this way, but when they actually say "you're the wrong job" or ask you to change, they ruin the entire "role play" aspect of the game. It's all fine & dandy if you don't invite someone, but don't tell them to change. I'm a [ blu / smn ] because I want to be, tyvm.

Some people worry about stats and equipment and subjobs. And sure, these things raise their fair share of questions. But I'll give credit to someone who is about the roleplay and not the grind who comes up with a story as opposed to someone who's about the grind and not the roleplay and makes excuses to be ignorant or lazy.

I've seem AMAZING things from a [ whm / nin ], but its an endgame thing. Definitely not something you start out as, but definitely something to aspire to.

You could make any combo work for you doing solo stuff or less formal things. (I use formal for lack of a better word). As for raids and xp groups you couldnt make any combo work. For example I was PLD main I could not make PLD/NIN or PLD/WAR a respectable DD and I had the best DD gear that gill could buy. The DPS was just too low. However PLD/NIN was great when I was off doing my own thing.

Most games have RP servers for a reason, sadly ffxi was not one of them. (Atleast I dont recall seeing one. never really looked)

I have no idea who your trying to fool but WHM/nin in endgame is a joke. Like PLD/NIN its great for non formal things and solo stuff. But as for raids and xp pt's its a joke.

If someone asks you to change your sub you can say {No Thanks}, and if they invite you well great, if they dont oh well.

Like I said Its your choice to be w/e sub you want and its my choice to not invite a self centered player who does not understand game concepts and group mechanics.

One of the Big things IMO we are forgeting to mention that its a game and we are suppose to have fun. One of the reasons I hated WoW was the fact that most players would not invite  you for a Raid or Insty  unless your -said Class-  was a specific Spec.

I can tell you now that I have raided with all specs as my hunter, and did very well with each (also practiced with each spec to make sure I would be effective with each one). Why? becuase My buddies/online friends would figure out how in the raid/insty party my spec would fit,and maybe made a few adjustments. Only IF they REALLY felt they NEEDED me a certain spec, maybe because we did not have a certain class at the time or other various reasons...they would say "hey you mind respecing for this one?" and since it was not a "SPEC this way now or dont come" I had no problem respecing because they never forced it down my throat.

Guess my point being I personally think any combo can work well as long as your other party members are more open minded to odd/new/challenging ways to approche a situation. And im not saying any of you are not open minded,im just making a general statement :)

Its my personall beleif that your wrong here. FFXI was very strict on job roles, if you tried to deviate from your jobs role you were going to be worthelss in an endgame type setting. Like I said you could do w/e worked for you on solo play, but that success you may have there will not translate to success in end game with your off the wall combo.

The sub job system was meant to complement your main job not to make you a DD mage.
