It's strange.. having played UO, then EQ2 and onwards, having tried practically everything on the market thats P2P and some F2P games (with 1 or two exceptions - I never tried Eve and maybe 1-2 others in that time period) I wonder if this will finally be it?

I absolutely loved EQ2 in the beginning, but the whole time I looked at Star Wars Galaxies as well and heard I was really missing out. That is a game I never had a chance to try properly, but I hear everywhere how great it used to be.

Same goes for the new Final Fantasy 14 game out next year.. I read about it and my hopes remain high, but it seems gaming has completely changed.. I never really considered EQ2 a "grind". Maybe that's because I was always involved with things and it flew by, even on my second run to level 80. I think WoW was when I first experienced a grind in a game (at least a noticible one).

My question is.. will Star Wars: TOR bring back the good old days? I'm a die hard Bioware fan, have been for about 8 years now, when I got into gaming properly. I'm hoping this is going to be something spectacular.. I'm tired of the reboxed grind with a different skin. Final Fantasy XI and EQ2 felt completely different for me.. yet WoW and Perfect World International and 1-2 other games just felt so similar. I guess it's that kind of repetition in a gme that burns you out - you know the one I mean, the one where you feel like you're starting something new and fresh but it's the same all over again.

Anyone else think, or at least hope Star Wars: TOR will break that mold?

I think all or nothing thinking will leave you disappointed.  No game can be all things to all people.

No game thus far has been everything to anyone.

SWG was remarkably good, yet it was a buggy, broken game that was never truly balanced or fixed.  The community made it fun, as did the skill system, player housing, player controlled economy, and the advanced crafting.  Some couldn't have cared less about those elements, they only wanted combat.  It wasn't everything to anyone, but it was pretty damned good.  Yet, it still could have been much better.  Now it's cow tripe, IMHO.

This value of community is why I don't think WoW is all that fun anymore - it's become remarkably dumbed-down to point that any idiot can successfully raid, and that was the only engaging element of that game for me.  The community in WoW just isn't what it's been in other games.

TOR has the potential to be similarly engaging for a great many of us, but it will never be everything in the manner you present.  Nothing can.

I have invested too much in swg to talk further about that pile here...

SW:TOR will be a great game if you remember:

  • This game is vastly resource intensive (time money talent etc) so it will appeal to the majority. I doubt the complexity of swg or eq2 will be there. Not WoW but I am sure they took notes of what Blizzard did right and wrong.
  • Don't compare this to swg! It is completely different.
  • As much as we would all like it released now, it will take a while and will have bugs when it comes out.
  • People will complain no matter what Bioware does so try it for yourself.

your reading has increased to level 2!

Just guessing, but I think it's a safe bet taht you will get your money's worth from the box purchase and free month, plus an additional month or two at the traditional 14.95 per month, especially if you like the graphics, which I do.

The first few months of any game are fast leveling, figuring out the GUI, getting to know your way around, and exploring a new world, making a new character, deciding on a class/skills, etc. And this is Star Wars, so it's going to be a fun world to explore.

I think it's going to be pretty hard to botch this game, from what I've seen so far, for that initial play period of the first few months. The real question is if it can maintain your interest after the new MMORPG smell wears off.

I will buy this game no matter what, unless something very terrible happened before launch.  Bioware alone is enough, to pull $50 off my wallet.

I have a few reservations to Mr OP tho.

(1) If you feel WoW as grindy, not many games are not grindy.  WoW surely have tons of limitations, but grindy is about the furthest one on the list of reservations.  Any game less "grindy" than WoW would have people maxed out in hours.  As an illustration, I think someone maxed to lvl 80 within a few days of launch of wotlk.  How grindy can it be?  I got the gut feeling that it would take longer for people to hit max in SW:ToR than WoW.

(2) If you are talking about WoW grindy, and that you love EQ2, maybe you are talking about WoW at launch.  I have played both games during launch, and I definitely feel WoW to be much less grindy.  The interface is so smooth, the quests so natural, I hit lvl 30s without noticing I was playing much.  I hope SW:ToR will give that kind of smoothness, so that we can focus on playing and stop watch the xp bar or rank levels.

(3) From you list, you mentioned, UO and EQ2.  Nothing in between, maybe you are in UO all the way till EQ2.  Maybe.  Then you might be more pvp oriented than me.  I wonder if SW:ToR is PvP oriented enough for you.

Nothing critical, just some ideas, and definitely not directed against you.

It won't break the mold, imo. Hopefully it'll shape it a bit different though, this industry needs some fresh air.

It won't deviate from the basic WoW foundation.

It will look like ass.

It will be a simplified game meant to appeal to the mass market casual.

The only redeeming quality of the game, the only thing that sets it apart, will be the dynamic personal story system. But good luck enjoying that when everything else is hopelessly average.

I doubt any game can accomplish that because as this site shows we all have different expectations when it comes to MMORPGs. I'm still waiting for someone to take the old Gangsters game by EIDOS and make an MMO from that. It won't ever happen, but it would be a kick ass game if done right.

MMOs played:SWG,NGE,Warhammer, World of Warcraft, Star Trek Online,Eve, Star Wars the Old Republic.
Favorite MMO: Star Wars the Old Republic
Least Favorite MMO: NGE

Tried: WoW
Played: EQ, EQII, AO, SWG, NGE-SWG, LoTRO, WAR, Vanguard, Eve, WWIIOL, Guild Wars, Darkfall, AoC.
Playing: DAoC.
Waiting For: SW:TOR.

Aside from number 2, this guy is probably spot on. They are coming into this with 1 goal ... making money and lots of it. I hold out hope that it will be a step up from the normal pushed out crap and I think it will at least achieve that. Should be a decent game but I doubt its the holy grail anyone has been looking for.

Very few games dare to be truly different, theres too much obsession with levels and xp in games, it should be more about setting free the players imaginations, not tying the players down by dictating to them what they do in the game,  choices between a b or c means you dont let the players do x y or z.  so yes, i think this game is just going to be another of those casual games that gets launched to a lot of hype and then 3 months later, people obsess over what went wrong and why.

None of you know what this game is going to be like yet..NONE of you, trenchgun is obviously a hater of this game already that much is made plain by the posts on the subject of this game..

obviously all successfull games whether they are MMORPG's or not follow a few very simple basic rules..and the more successfull ones expand upon thos rules and go into different directions...but noone knows if this game is going to be good or brilliant or not.....we all have our hopes..or desires about what we want, all we can do is wait.......wait and see..keep your fingers crossed if you want..maybe it will help ..i dont know.......but what i do know is i agree with the statement..........nothing is everything to everyone..

lets just wait and see.....me, im looking forward to playing this game..what ive seen so far is promising..and i do like other things bioware has done....so ive got my fingers crossed

No, I'm looking for a more polished Wurm online (with Crysis graphics) but this still looks pretty damn good loving the idea of vioce acting through the whole game.

Sorry, but they are using classes and levels...just like nearly every game out there. I was looking forward to this game until that was announced. Now, its just another game trapped in the same restrictive model that most others are. I am so tired of games that limit what my character can know and learn because of some class the developers put together to force me into some role. In real life, you don't hear a doctor say "Hey, sorry, can't learn how to change a tire, I'm a 15th level Doctor, not a Mechanic."

Star Wars characters, in the movies, have diverse skills. Leia has starship repair skills, and she's a diplomat. Think diplomats or anything close as a class in OR will be able to fix anything? I think not.

Come on game companies, get real, would you?

Oh, and thanks Bioware for cloning WoW and D&D....again.

I won't be buying or even trying this game when the trial comes out.

Gads.

If you aren't actively part of the solution, you have no right to complain about anything.

Will Star Wars: The Old Republic be hyped enough to make everyone believe it'll be everything we've ever wanted in a game?

The in-depth stories for each class are alone enough for me to play it, everything else is just extra. The one thing I originally hated about MMORPGs is that they stated to be RPGs, yet they lacked any worthwhile storyline, which for me is synonomous with an RPG videogame.

If it is as they claim, where each class has their own storyline equalling that of a moderately long singleplayer game, I'll be more than happy to drop $50 on it. In fact, I'd probably pay $50 for each story line if I had to.
