No doubt. I could not get past 40 in that game (open beta). It was insane. I later on played on a server with 14x the XP and still the grind was pretty heavy after level 55. I just do not understand how people actually had the will to go beyond level 40 in normal servers...
Unfortunately in L2's case, excessive botting was the answer to that question. Lately though it's impossible. |

I haven't played EQ, but I have played FFXI, and that was a real grind. Still people shouldn't point out that WoW or Aion isn't a grind since it's not like L2 or EQ. A grind is a grind. Devs need to work on making the process so fun that you wouldn't even think of it in that way. Until leveling up is more fun than work, I will always consider it a grind. |

I cannot agree on this at all. The main reason I play MMOs these days is for PvP. It's the closest thing I can get to a massive Fighter game. Killing mobs is boring most of the time. Regardless of if the mob is elite or not, I only see minor differences between mobs. Their AI is pretty much the same, they may use a different spell, but they do the same thing. I can't stand killing the same mob over and over again, regardless if I'm grouped or not. The only difference with being grouped is the mob dies quicker. With MMO mobs you always know what to expect. You always use the same spells/attacks; rarely do you have to change your pattern. At least in PvP you don't know what to expect because you have brains behind the avatar. I'll still be playing Aion, but I'm not a fan of the current AI and player progression in MMOs. |

trouble is, wows grind is all rep//gold/quest -- if you want great monster bashing grind try L2. One of my fav MMOs by the way. I wont get into what caused it to not be so good in the west, but I loved it. And for the record, EVERY MMO has a grind -- each goes about it their own way, but the very nature of an MMO, is a grind. |

Originally posted by Truth01 Dude, every game has a grind. Most of the things in WoW that you mentioned )gold/rep/repairs come along as you quest and such, as with Aion but to a different extent. And an endgame grind in WoW? really? Aion is about grinding at 50 as well, you just can't die in that grind :p |

You cannot prescribe a quanitative definition to the term grind. Grind does not translate to numbers that well. It doesn't matter if its 1 or if its 1754783594. Grind is all about perception. A grind is simply when you are having to do the same task over and over again and there is a major lack of enjoyment or fun with said task. Going to work everyday is a grind if you hate your job. Me? I love my job and love what I do so it's not a grind. WOW is the same way. When I play, be it raid, craft, do dailies, or whatever, I LIKE the game and enjoy it and I have fun; therefore it isn't a grind for me. It might be for someone else but it isn't for me. And some other posters are correct in this thread. The modern, new MMO player has NO CLUE what a grind really is. In EQ and DAOC, it was the same thing. Log-in, get a group, find a spot to kill mobs, sit in that one spot for X hours and keep pulling mobs until you log-off to go to bed. You hope and pray you don't wipe because you would (maybe) lose your spot and even worse, you would lose a lot of experience. Many nights I ended the night with a lot less experience than I began. heck in EQ, you could lose levels and it would make any skill you got at the new level unusable until you gained that level back. And don't even get me started on HELL levels. Just be glad you never got to experience that. |
