I find 2d sidescrollers much more enjoyable than the 3d mmorpgs

Maplestory and Ghost online were fun, but both of them are heavily flawed. Maplestory's a slow grindfest and ghost online lacks content(and people).

www.gametrailers.com/video/preview-muramasa-the/48399 If an mmorpg looked like this, it would be ****ing amazing. Great style. Fast-paced combat, and an awesome setting.

Sidescrollers are an interesting change of pace, and maplestory was *though I hate to admit* a good game.

Awesome video, and I agree a sidescroller like that would make a awesome mmo imo

I could only support this for mobile phones or handhelds

I'll agree to this too.  The first 20-30 levels of Maple Story are fun as hell.

The issue with making a 2D game that doesn't use some easily modifiable, basic sprites is cost.

Muramasa and Odin Sphere (should of looked that game up as well, its made by the same company) are single-player rpgs that took a few years of development. No need to add in different looks or gear, or make sure that when the person is moving it looks right with every possible piece of equipment or style (or lack of) hair. And no several different classes to add onto that, and skills for that matter. The  cost of making every sprite look hand-drawn and just as good as the next would be insane, as would be the time involved in doing it.

Now I'd love to have a 2D mmo with the quality of graphics that OS or Muramasa had, and f2p or not, I'd probably at least play it for a bit.

I would just let the players do it.

More specifically, I would release a set of spritesheets of the basic character models, let's say male and female humanoids, and allow players to create their own costume items over top of them to submit for addition into the game, along with their own in-game name.  These costume items would be put into a cash shop-like structure, with players needing to pay a small fee to buy them.  (It would be a one-time fee for each item.  This isn't a rental system here.)  And the player that created the item would, for every instance their item is bought, be granted a percentage of cash shop points to use as they please.

Not sure how fully player-made content like this could work effectively in anything other then a cash shop system, honestly.

The F2P market has plenty of them.  They all pretty much suck though.  The only 2d mmo that is worth a damn is Ultima.  It is still a little fun but meh...maybe a new ultima would be good!

Ever heard of an opinion? That was my response to the post title. And I'm sure you're not speaking for everyone either, just kids who can't afford a REAL game.

While I am somewhat hesitant about supporting that idea, its mainly from the amount of "DIKZ AND TITZ LAWL" some people would make on that, or worse yet "nekkid" suits. Am I saying I would be against such items? In a way, yes, I'd hate for that to be the only thing I see in a large area full of people. But of course such items would need to be approved so I'm not worried of that permeating the game.

Otherwhise, a system that allows someone to create an item, and if they are good at it, are paid with shop currency for it would be a nice thing if implemented well, and depending on the flexibility of the creation system, would be great.

Of course the true issue then is animating them, which is the heart of what I was talking about. Unless the person is seriously investing time to ensure that it looks good on everyone, fits animations, and the like, you'd have body parts clipping through the graphic. If the game is 3D, then that adds even more of an issue (Not even Blizzard invests enough time or money to fix this).
