Ive thought about this topic alot in my 8 years of playing MMORPG's. Although ive played over 100 titles refuring to MMORPG's, Id have to pick Atlantica Online or Warhammer Online as my fav, each with a different sub catagory of gameplay. BUT, the big question that I want answered is asked to you! Yes you, the followers of the MMORPG.com franchise! What is YOUR favorite MMORPG? Think hard and wise!
Thanks, Zach |

Guild Wars. Traditional, grindfest, timesink, imbalanced, bugged, virtual world simulations are not for me. Never argue with a fool, onlookers may not be able to tell the difference. -Author unknown, attributed to Mark Twain |

Best PvE = EQ1 Best PvP = DAoC Best combination of pve and pvp in one game = WoW (pre-BC, pre-arena)
Side note, most disappointing MMO in history, EQ2. |

Sorry to say but it's World of Warcraft. WoW has that "it" factor that no one else can seem to master. The game has amazing lore, a huge variety of quests, underrated pvp, beautiful artwork and music, a huge world, and most importantly, it is FUN. You know? FUN? The reason why we play.. |

Players come for the game, but they stay for the people- Most Devs have forgotten this. |

Guild Wars - as best mmorpg for *me*
other mmos have better environment for community (read: less instancing)
but I enjoy the class skill variety in GW and feeling like I was part of the unfolding story campaign and how I didnt have to play the "carrot on stick" improve your Gear grind |

There are not best, since there are different tastes. For a particular taste there are mmos better than others, but no mmo can make happy all tastes. |

Originally posted by Dewm FF is a console game, so is laged by the problems a consoley game. Is also a JRPG game, so the combat is somewhat like a turn-based Pokemon game. I don't think is for everyone, more like a niche game. Anyway I am jealous FF have what you describe. I would want other games have what FF have... deep into a impentrable shell of gamey-consoley-jrpg-ish crap.

Everquest. It really changed things and pioneered most of the stuff we take for granted today. It is by far the best game of it's time. Wow did bring in a lot of players into the genre but besides that it didn't make that much innovation, it just added polish. The best right now is harder, they kinda feels so alike right now and the ones that differs or try to be innovative are usually bad, I would probably be forced to say Eve. But the future looks nice, TOR, WoDO, GW2... |

Classic EQ, that is: Everquest (march 1999) + The Ruins of Kunark (March 2000) + The Scars of Velious (December 2000) + The Shadows of Luclin (December 2001) |

My favorite overall would have to be WOW. Though I think threads like this, and handing out "titles" specifically, will result in little more than a flame war. >.> |

I think the title "Best MMORPG" should be shot, hanged, ran over and dragged behind a truck, dismembered, and burned. "My personal favorite" would be a better title. Too many people just want too many different things out of an MMO, and the category has just become too broad for anything to be called "Best"./ |

Eve. I've just never seen a MMO that gives me more options or that is more complex. It has great graphics (even by today's standards) and decent support. Honorable mention goes to City of Heroes. They did a lot of stuff right as well. |

The most successful MMO is definately IRC. It was launched back in 1988 and is still running strong with a lot of roleplayers ("girls").
Seriously: You first have to define best. Best profit? WoW. Best level-based, fantasy grindgame? WoW. Best economic game? SWG or Eve. Best PvP game? No matter what I answer here, someone will go beserk on me so I will just say Hello Kitty Online.
But if I were allowed to take a single MMO to an isolated island it would be... SWG before the doomsday patch. --- |

Ah ha. ah ha ah ha ah ha. Now we see the problem with MMO gamers. Some think there should be just one best. What's best for me right now is CoV. For some one else it's WoW. So on and so forth. Hell, I even liked PotBS. And I never liked WoW. So please, there is no best. |
